A water-stop of proper dimensions and shape can be selected according to each requirement. By shape, VYNON water-stop can roughly be classified into two categories, the Dumbbell types and Corrugated types. The Dumbbell types include the Flat Dumbbell Type (1) which is applicable to structural joints and for which there are no strict requirements for its water-stopping effects, and the Dumbbell Center Bulb Type (2) applicable to flexible joints. The corrugated types include the Corrugated Center Bulb Type. Type (3) is applicable to sections where flexibility small, and Type (4), having a large canter bulb, is applicable to sections where flexibility is great. The bending Type (5) is applicable for panels with right angle bends. Spectacles Type (6) is best for concrete structures having curved faces, such as a tunnel. 2 This type was designed in the days when metal water-stops ware replaced with rubber water-stops. This type is still manufactured today with rubber or polyvinylchloride. However, from the viewpoint of the water-stopping effect, we cannot expect much from this type. After the application of concrete, its temperature rises because it is heated by hydration. Needless to say, the water-stop buried in the concrete is also heated and swells. Later, the concrete contracts with hardening and drying, and as a result the water-stop also contracts with the fall in temperature. Thus, the water-stop buried in the concrete is bearing a tensile load at all times. If the thickness of the water-stop at the time of the concrete application is represented by T1 and that after the hardening of concrete by T2, their relationship is T1>T2, and a slight gap is created between the concrete and the water-stop. However, since it is bearing a tensile load, the bulbs on both ends are adhering tightly to the concrete. (See Fig.4). Water stopping is thus effected by these portions only. Accordingly, in case the aggregates are lying in direct contact with these parts, the water-stopping effect is almost zero. Because of such shortcomings, water-stops of this type will disappear completely from the market in the future. The flexibility of the Flat Dumbbell Type is large for this type, and its water-stopping effect is not good. Accordingly, this type also will follow the fate of the Flat Dumbbell Type. The Dumbbell types (1) (2) have a shape developed by rubber water-stops, whereas Corrugated types have a shape developed by vinyl chloride water-stops. In the case of rubber water-stops, production of those having complex shapes is difficult because they must undergo a vulcanizing process. Contrary, vinyl chloride can be extruded, and therefore production of water-stops having ideal shapes is possible. In the case of the corrugated types, the water infiltration route is longer than the case of the Dumbbell types. Moreover, the shape of the protruding section (rib) has another water-stopping effect. As already stated a water-stop buried in concrete receivers the tensile load in right angles the direction of protrusion (In the case of the Corrugated type, to the direction of the extension of the rib.). In this case, shape variation of the Corrugated type water-stop and the variations at each point are as shown in Fig.5. VYNON PVC Water-Stops January /7

3 The thickness of the water-stop becomes less as T1>T2, Point A and Point B change more or less, but almost no variation is seen at Point C. (A tension of 20mm. was applied in this case.) When it is used under such conditions as shown in Fig.5, the shape of the rib has an important significance. The rib is embedded in concrete. Moreover, it is forming a plane contact. For maintaining the plane contact, it is evident that possession of sloped planes to the tensile direction is best. In consideration of this point, a trapezoid is adopted for all rib section shapes of VYNON water-stops. An inverted trapezoidal shape (See Fig.6.) is adopted for water-stop manufactured by certain manufactures. However, the results of the concrete application test show that air remains in sections A and as a result the water-stopping effect is inferior. With conventional water-stops it is necessary to spirit the panel in two in order to insert the water-stop between the sections before applying concrete. However, the S types can be used without splitting the panel. As shown in Fig.7, the water-stop (2) is bent and then fitted to the panel (1) with a nail (4). To maintain the correct angle position of the water-stop to the panel, the water-stop is fixed with wire (3) on both sides. The conventional water-stop had a shortcoming as an aperture was created at section A into which concrete application. In the case of the VYNON water-stop, however, the two pieces located below the protruding section, with an oblique slot, slip mutually, thereby blocking the aperture section. Accordingly, infiltration of concrete can be prevented. VYNON PVC Water-Stops January /7

4 In discussing the water-stopping effect its shape and size are of course important factors. However, far more important is the degree of difficulty or ease in performing construction work. To insure a sufficient water-stopping effect, it must be placed at an appropriate position and be set in at right angles, as much as possible, to the concrete joint. Although the instruction manuals for the conventional water-stop mention this point, none of them explain clearly the actual methods to be followed in doing the construction work. The significance of the design of the Spectacles Type of our VYNON water-stop lies here. Once the water-stop is fitted to the concrete shaping panel as designated and then the concrete is applied, it can be set at right angles to the concrete joint without difficulty. When a water-stop of this type is used for ordinary concrete structures, the construction work can be performed simply and easily, and the water-stopping effect is guaranteed. It is most suitable for concrete structures having curved faces, such as a tunnel. By inserting φ9mm iron rod into the hollow on the both edges of the products, it helps to prevent from winding or waving and helps to get proper installation. VYNON Super ATP is also available in this series, which has very unique characteristics that has expansion portion at the edge of the products when it contacts with water. Besides it has special coating on the expansion portion to prevent from premature expansion before it is buried in concrete. 7 Installation and Handling VYNON Water Stop is a product made of comparatively soft polyvinyl-chloride compound having good workability. Accordingly cutting off or joining work is done with extreme ease; besides its light weight. Thus joining work of horizontal or vertical joints as well as finishing work of horizontal or vertical intersectional seems are easily performed at job sites.
