THE PROTEGA METHOD FOR STEEL AND WOOD

Being a painter involves working with people and materials, as well as aesthetic values. If you work with fire protection paint, you have a decisive impact on how much can be saved in the event of a fire. 2 3

s a paint manufacturer, we aim to be the best on the market in terms of quality. But it is every bit as important to be at the cutting edge of developments when it comes to environmental issues as well. Products which are most sustainable in environmental terms are the most futureproof. But nothing is so good that it could not be improved. We are constantly making improvements to our production process, and our aim is not to impact upon our environment at all. We aim to be the best in terms of the environment when it comes to fire protection paint. It went without saying even 15 years ago that halogen should not be used. Nowadays, our products are BASTA-registered and inspected by SundaHus and the Swedish organisation Byggvarubedömningen. This allows our products to be compared with others. Our environmental efforts are a further advantage of choosing Protega. Our concern for health and the environment permeates everything we do. Both internally and externally. We regard environmental legislation as minimum requirements, and if we can improve on something we do not wait for legislation to catch up. But concern for our environment involves more than just our responsibility for our children, our grandchildren and the future. The environmental qualities of products also provide a competitive parameter which increases in value as environmental awareness increases on a global scale. Our emphasis is not just on quality and price, because our fire protection paint is in demand on account of its added value in terms of the environment as well. We hold accreditation to ISO 9001 and All our products undergo detailed production inspection and final inspection. Everything can be traced. Every batch. Each and every bucket. With a complete range of products for concrete, steel and wooden structures, fire sealing and fire joints, we are the leading Nordic manufacturer of passive fire protection. Our concept and products are based on great expertise and 25 years of experience. 4 5

ur fundamental principle is fairly simple. Instead of covering the load-bearing structure of a building with thick insulation, fire-retardant paint is applied directly to the load-bearing structure instead. The only thing that sets our fire protection paint apart from general purpose paint is the fact that you have to know how much paint you need to use depending on the applicable fire class. This is easy to work out with Protega s help. When you know what type of profile is to be painted, you can calculate the amount of fire protection paint you need. If you are working with steel profiles, use the Steel Manual. This contains all the relevant facts and tables. Our dimensioning tables are used for wood and laminated wood. If you are not sure what profiles are used and how they have been pretreated, please see the construction drawings or talk to a fire protection consultant. Of course, you are also welcome to give us a call. PROTEGA STEEL MANUAL HOW TO CALCULATE NOVATHERM 4FRe What can our fire protection paint do? In the event of a fire, the heat causes the paint to swell up. The paint is quickly transformed into a thick, impenetrable foam which slows the progress of the flames and the fire. This gives the rescue services more time to intervene, and there is less risk of the building collapsing. As a result, reconstruction costs are reduced indirectly. 5 PROTEGA NOVATHERM 4FRe MADE IN SWEDEN In the event of a fire, steel structures are subject to thermal stress which causes the temperature of the material to rise and reducing the load-bearing capacity of the steel. The risk of the building collapsing grows, and hence construction regulations demand that steel should be protected from heat and insulated. FOR STRUCTURAL STEEL WORK Novatherm 4FRe is the best fire intumescent paint on the market for internal, load-bearing steel structures. It is water-based, halogen-free and easy to work with, and it gives a perfect finish. Novatherm 4FRe meets the most stringent technical and aesthetic requirements. The slim shape of the structural steel work is maintained and there is no need for further insulation. APPLICATION Applied with roller, brush or airless spray. The surface must be free from dust and grease. The steel must be pretreated in accordance with the relevant application instructions. Should not be used at temperatures below +10 C. Can be protected with an approved topcoat. PACKAGING Plastic bucket containing 12.5 kg. 44 buckets per pallet OTHER DATA Viscosity: Highly viscous Flashpoint: Non-flammable Paint film: 2000 g/m2 gives 1520 µm wet film and 1000 µm dry film. For further details please refer to the technical data sheet on our website. DRYING TIME At temperatures of min. +23 C and a relative humidity of max. 50%, the following guidelines apply: 8 hours for each layer. Can be painted with an approved topcoat after 48 hours. 8 9

PROTEGA NOVATHERM 2FR MADE IN SWEDEN Wood undergoes a charring process when it is attacked by fire, and this reduces the load-bearing capacity of the structure. To extend this capacity, the structure can be fireproofed with our system so that it can meet the requirements of the specified fire protection class. Our fire protection paint preserves the architectural design of the wooden structure, a factor which is particularly important in instances where old buildings are to be preserved for posterity. If you require a transparent paint for wood, you should use Novatherm 1FR. FOR SURFACES AND LOAD-BEARING WOODEN STRUCTURES Novatherm 2FR is a white, halogen-free, water-based intumescent paint for insulation of internal, load-bearing wooden structures and surfaces in B-s1, d0 on wood, wood fibre and chipboard. Novatherm 2FR is transformed into a thick layer of foam when exposed to high temperatures in the event of a fire. The fine-pore foam layer effectively reduces the heat. In moist environments (RH > 75 %), or when it has to be possible to clean the surface, Novatherm 2FR can be protected with an approved topcoat. APPLICATION The surface must be untreated and free from dust and grease. An adhesion test should be carried out in the case of wood varieties such as teak. Work should not be carried out at temperatures below +10 C. The moisture of the wood must not exceed 15%. Applied with roller, brush or airless spray. PACKAGING Plastic bucket containing 12.5 kg. 44 buckets per pallet OTHER DATA Viscosity: Highly viscous Flashpoint: Non-flammable Paint film: 400 g/m2 gives 305 µm wet film and 215 µm dry film. For further details please refer to the technical data sheet on our website. DRYING TIME At temperatures of min. +23 C and a relative humidity of max. 50%, the following guidelines apply: 8 hours for each layer. Can be painted with an approved topcoat after 48 hours

PROTEGA NOVATHERM 1FR Wood undergoes a charring process when it is attacked by fire, and this reduces the load-bearing capacity of the structure. To extend this capacity, the structure can be fireproofed with our system so that it can meet the requirements of the specified fire protection class. Our intumescent paint preserves the architectural design of the wooden structure, a factor which is particularly important in instances where old buildings are to be preserved for posterity. If you require a white intumescent paint for wood, you should use Novatherm 2FR. TRANSPARENT PAINT FOR SURFACES AND LOAD-BEARING WOOD Novatherm 1FR is a colourless, halogen-free, water-based intumescent paint. It is used indoors for fire insulation of load-bearing wooden structures and surfaces in B-s1, d0 on wood, wood fibre and chipboard. Novatherm 1FR is transformed into a thick layer of foam when exposed to high temperatures in the event of a fire. The fine-pore foam layer effectively reduces the heat. Novatherm 1FR must always be used in combination with Klarlack 84F (matt or semi-matt) as a protective clear varnish. APPLICATION The base must be untreated and free from dust and grease. 44 buckets per pallet OTHER DATA Viscosity: Highly viscous Flashpoint: Non-flammable Paint film: 300 g/m2 gives 230 µm wet film and 150 µm dry film.
