BIM in Statsbygg TWN - September 17ᵗᵸ 2012 Øivind Christoffersen Director General

Agenda BIM Statement National and international cooperation Impacting the market Open BIM (IFC) as a standard information exchange format in the buildings lifecycle Benefits of BIM-ing BIM in refurbishment and facility management

Initiatives/Necessary activities and actions Build BIM competences and skills Pilot projects Work for standardization, both national and international (BuildingSmart) Ally with important partners (GSA, Senaatti) Communicate Statsbyggs ambitions and requirements timely and clearly in the market Extend IFC abilities in software with our development (R&D) contracts Lecture to the industry about BIM

Statsbygg's focus on BIM and IFC Statsbygg aims to increase the value of use of our buildings for tenants and users, and aims to significantly reduce construction and operating costs and building damage, through use of BIM based on open, international standards (IFC) 2010 BIM (IFC) will be the standard carrier of information in ALL our business processes

International involvement GSA/Senattii/Statsbygg annoncement Purpose: IFC support in international software USA, the Netherlands, Mexico, Estonia, Finland, Iceland, Denmark and Norway

Some results of the statement Speed up IFC support in CAD tools (ArchiCAD, Revit, AutoCad Archtecture, DDS, AllPlan, Bentley, Vectorworks...) Speed up IFC support in disciplin tools (Tekla, Riuska, ISY Calcus ) Model checker tools (Solibri) IFC support in 140 tools

National and international involvement in BuildingSmart = Purpose: Develop standards (IFC, IFD, IDM)

Open BIM offers great flexibility

BIM in different stages of a buildings lifetime Open BIM (IFC) as information exchange format Requirement stage Design stage Construction stage FM stage Building spatial program is the requirement-bim Requirement- BIM is the «contract» with the user, the departement og the design team Design team imports requirement- BIM as basis for design-bim. Statsbygg compare design-bim against requirement- BIM Design-BIM is handed over to contractor. Contractor extends and enhance design- BIM Contractor hands over an As built BIM As-build BIM = FM-BIM (v. 1.0) is the basis for facility management FM-BIM must continously be updated with FM information

Design benefits Easy check against design intent (room function program) Earlier visualization of a design Easier access to information Common information base (better collaboration) Higher quality on data Easier to make cost estimates Improve energy efficiency and sustainability Less building site errors

Check of design (areals) Better design, more effektive areals Example: New National Museum, m², 989 rooms

Cost estimating Easier cost estimating (alternatives) Example: New National Museum; Without quantities from BIM almost impossible to calculate project costs before milestone

Skien BFS BIM used for contracting. BIM used for all disciplines Important for collaboration Better design, less design errors Almost no change orders due to extensive use of clash detection tools during design Result: Change orders < 2%

Framsenteret - Tromsø BIM basis for cost calculation, LCC analysis, CO² footprint analysis With BIM, different options were analysed in early phase with small efforts

BIM in rehabilitation projects Bergen corthouse experiences 3D-scanning necessary for a useful BIM TrueView useful in designwork Important that the Design Group has BIM experiences TrueView hall Bergen tinghus

Film Bergen tinghus

Effort/Effect Cost of design changes Ability to impact cost and functional capabilities Preferred design process (BIM) Cost of design change Traditional design process PD SD DD CD PR CA OP Time

Logical structure from BIM BIM in FM system

BIM in FM system Properties from BIM Link between FM objekts og BIM

BIM in FM system Link between job orders and BIM MainManager/ oversikt og opsjoner / utgave 1.0

Summary International cooperation pays off The «Statement» has been vital for what we have achieved so far We are, indeed, seeing benefits The benefits will be more tangible and evident as software become more stable more in alliance with the standards The skill sets and competences in the whole value chain are improved

Thank you for your attention!
