The hidden science OF BEAUTIFULLY PROTECTED SURFACES

More than just the FINISHING TOUCH The English poet John Keats said a thing of beauty is a joy forever. Coatings can have the power to heighten and enhance that beauty. Just think of a nice clear finish that brings out the beautiful grain of an old wooden floor or table. Or even of something as prosaic as a fridge whose pleasing design is underlined by an equally pleasing layer of paint. Yet coatings add a lot more to objects and their surfaces than just a good-looking finishing touch. They also protect and preserve them thus prolonging the joy and benefits they bring us not just in the metaphorical way the 19th-century Romantic poet had in mind, but in a very real, day-to-day sense. What allows coatings to do all this is the invisible science that is hidden in them. A finely calibrated mixture of chemical compounds, each with its own special function, for which it has been prepared by a complex interplay of end-user desires, manufacturer needs and supplier innovations. Additive compounds that make coatings better, safer and more attractive. Additives developed by Clariant, the company with the sure touch for smart and sustainable coating solutions. Look beneath the surface; let not the many qualities nor the worth of a thing escape you. MARCUS AURELIUS, MEDITATIONS 2 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR COATINGS 3

Coating the world in CUSTOMER-ORIENTED INNOVATION Clariant s expertise in chemical innovation reaches back more than a century. The company s roots were laid in 1886 in Switzerland, one of the traditional heartlands of chemical invention. In more recent times, the acquisition of parts or the entire business of big industry names like Hoechst, Ciba, Rite, Ricon and Süd-Chemie has added to our vast and deeprooted fund of chemical knowledge and experience. Today, Clariant is a leading global player in specialty chemicals with more than employees and a worldwide network of production sites and service and development centers. Producing highly innovative, superior-quality additives for coatings is one of our main business areas, with manufacturing sites concentrated in Switzerland and Germany and application development centers situated in Germany as well as Asia. Within the coatings industry, we are well known for the consistently high-quality ammonium polyphosphate we supply for fire protection and flame retardants, as well as for our benchmark-setting products based on that compound. Sold under the brand name Exolit, these products provide state-of-the-art fire protection and are usable for cellulosic and hydrocarbon intumescent coatings. Our newest invention in the series is Exolit 855, a flameretarding compound for transparent wood coatings that enables manufacturers to combine highly efficient fire and water resistance with a dazzlingly brilliant surface. The product offers a perfect example of what our priorities are when working together with our customers and partners. We listen to their current and future needs. We help them select the right products for their coatings. And we cooperate closely with them to develop new ones that give them that essential bit of edge in the market and allow their customers to better protect, enhance and beautify surfaces. It is the same customerand solution-focused approach we also apply when producing our leading-edge waxes and polymer additives for the coatings industry. Our waxes from the Ceridust, Licowax and Licocene lines not only help to protect and beautify surfaces, providing superb control over feel, texture and gloss, but also serve as invaluable aids in many processing steps. Our polymer additives from the Hostavin and Hostanox series improve weathering resistance and reduce color fading and loss of gloss, offering all the latest products of the field in excellent and reliable quality. 4 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR COATINGS 5

SUSTAINABILITY THAT GOES BEYOND THE SURFACE Aside from quality and innovation, one more thing that our company and products stand out for is sustainability. To us, this aspect is so important that we have made it a key element of our business approach, and especially in the coatings segment, developments have shown that this was the right decision in more than just one sense. The demand of the market for non-hazardous products with an improved ecological profile will continue to grow, and with our extensive portfolio of solutions that cater to such products, we are just the partner you need for satisfying that demand. This goes beyond offering products tailored to solvent-free solutions like water-based paints or powder coatings and thus helping to reduce the emission of volatile organic compounds (VOCs). It also includes producing our own raw materials, as we do in our backwardsintegrated wax production. And it includes offering high-quality sustainable solutions at competitive prices because we know that good intentions alone are not enough for coating the world in sustainable, consumerand customer-oriented innovation. Products that offer outstanding sustainability advantages are awarded our EcoTain label. These products have undergone a systematic, in-depth screening process using 36 criteria in all three sustainability dimensions: social, environmental and economic. EcoTain products significantly exceed sustainability market standards, have best-inclass performance and contribute overall to the sustainability efforts of the company and our customers. We are determined to keep expanding the number of EcoTain products and continue to screen our product portfolio. Discover EcoTain : CLARIANT.COM/ECOTAIN 6 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR COATINGS 7

Preserving the beauty and comfort OF LIVING SPACES The surfaces of our home surround us every day. A neatly painted facade. The subtle play of light on polished floors and table tops. Or the smooth-sanded planks of a sun-warmed terrace underfoot. Sometimes it is small things like these that define for us the very essence of domestic well-being and comfort. Clariant s state-of-the-art coating solutions help to preserve and protect that well-being. And they provide manufacturers with the flexibility and service they need to quickly respond to new architectural requirements and trends. DON T SHY AWAY FROM THE LIGHT Just like our skin, the surfaces of our homes and other buildings can suffer from too much sunlight. UV rays have the power to degrade both the components of a coating and the surface it is supposed to protect. With its Hostavin series, Clariant offers a wide range of light stabilizers that help to prevent this effect. The series includes powerful UV absorbers as well as four different types of HALS hindered amine light stabilizers that protect the surface of coatings by trapping free radicals. Pre-dispersed stabilizers provide optimized protection for the kind of easy-to-handle and eco-friendlier waterborne paints and coatings that both homeowners and coating professionals have come to expect. 8 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR ARCHITECTURAL COATINGS 9

TOUGH AGAINST SCRATCHES, YET SOFT TO THE TOUCH In the old days, wooden floors couldn t be shiny enough. Nowadays many homeowners prefer a more understated, matte finish which also has the advantage of showing scratches less. Clariant s micronized Ceridust waxes provide perfect control over gloss, both in solventand water-based coatings. At the same time, most of the products from this series add such outstanding scratch resistance to coatings that worrying over marred floors is more or less a thing of the past. Many of them are also made from renewables and add a natural smoothness to surfaces that will make users wax enthusiastic over their choice. SETTING THE MARKET STANDARD FOR NON-HALOGENATED FIRE SAFETY In California, forest fires have destroyed countless wood-built homes over the years. Yet when exposed to extreme heat, the steel structures of modern public and commercial buildings can weaken and collapse as well. With its ammonium polyphosphate based products from the Exolit AP line, Clariant has set the international benchmark for fire protection compounds that are used in intumescent coating systems. These coatings are thin and invisible enough not to stand in the way of architectural beauty but form a thick insulating foam under fire-related heat. Intumescent Coatings are robust, long-lasting and maintenance-free. Since they do not rely on potentially harmful halogens, Clariant s flame retardants are both a safer and more sustainable choice. 10 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR ARCHITECTURAL COATINGS 11

Traveling well-protected THROUGH SPACE AND TIME Driving a brand-new car can be a bit like wearing brandnew clothes: What feels unfamiliar at first soon turns into a sense of looking spruced-up, smart and shiny that we would not at all mind to preserve. Clariant s additives for automotive coatings help them resist the tolls of time, weather and travel more effectively. And if it s good-looking protection for other vehicles like ships and planes you re searching for, we ll be sure to find the right solution for you as well. 12 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR AUTOMOTIVE, AEROSPACE AND MARINE COATINGS 13

HIKE UP YOUR COATING S SUN PROTECTION FACTOR While a nice tan can be very flattering, a coating that sun and weather have caused to become cracked, dull or chalky is anything but. The UV absorbers and HALS from Clariant s Hostavin series contribute to protecting the surfaces of cars, ships and planes in the same way that the ingredients of a strong sunscreen help to protect the skin. Liquid light stabilizers in which UV absorbers and HALS are synergistically combined provide high-performance solutions for up-market automotive coatings and car refinish paints. Additives from the Hostanox line add to the protection by curbing the effects of heat and oxidation, both during the processing of coated parts and surfaces and in the long term. TAILOR-MADE SOLUTIONS FOR SEAWORTHY SURFACES Few environments pose as many challenges for coatings as those of sea and ocean. On the decks of ships and freighters, our Licowax and Ceridust waxes help crews to find their sea legs by making coatings and paints more skid-resistant. 14 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR AUTOMOTIVE, AEROSPACE AND MARINE COATINGS 15

A rugged and reliable coat for MANY YEARS OF SERVICE Marine coatings for commercial ships must be tough. But those protecting oil platforms or offshore wind farms against the elements must be just as resilient. On land, cladding heavily exposed infrastructure like bridges, pipelines and transmission towers in durable coats can be equally demanding, while the protection of mining facilities and chemical plants brings challenges all of its own. At Clariant, we are ready to meet those challenges and find made-to-fit solutions that guarantee you and your customers many years of faithful service. Because when the going gets tough is exactly the time when we get going. 16 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR PROTECTIVE COATINGS 17

PROTECTING TOUGH PEOPLE BY PROTECTING TOUGH SURFACES When the surfaces of large steel structures like bridges or oil platforms degrade, it is not just an aesthetic problem but can put the lives of those using and working on those structures in danger. Our Hostavin light stabilizers contribute to making both the coatings and the substrates they protect more resistant to the highly exposed conditions they usually have to endure. Our waxes from the Ceridust, Licowax and Licocene series help to protect the interior floors and walls of rugged work environments from scuffs, scratches and dangerous slipperiness. During the application of tough, thick and durable powder coatings, Clariant s waxes also assist to prevent caking, promote adhesion to substrates and bring many other advantages. Our industry benchmark Exolit flame retardants add that extra bit of safety to risk-prone public buildings and other structures. 18 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR PROTECTIVE COATINGS 19

Putting up a brave front to DAILY WEAR AND TEAR The offenses industrial coatings have to bear are just as varied as the objects they are used for. A tractor or excavator doing duty during the day and then spending a frosty night out in the open. A fridge, dishwasher or microwave patiently enduring regular use by entire families and still expected to look pretty. Car rims, consumer electronics, factory-coated furniture and floor boards, garage doors, roof panels, public transport and recreational vehicles: They all need a thick hide that combines steady resilience with good looks and in many cases even has to have a touch of the stylish. With our long history in research, our ingrained sense for sustainability and value addition and our globe-spanning service network we offer just the kind of flexibility and customer-oriented suppleness to find a robust solution for each of these needs. Our additives help industrial coatings to keep up a brave and attractive front even in the most demanding of environments. 20 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR INDUSTRIAL COATINGS 21

A MULTIFACETED PRODUCT PORTFOLIO FOR A MANY-SIDED BUSINESS Coils of flattened steel or aluminum provide the base for countless industrially manufactured products, from the metal housing of washing machines to sturdy roofs and sidings. Our Ceridust waxes are not just outstandingly effective at making the coatings applied to these coils more resistant to scratches and marks, but also aid to keep freshly coated metal sheets from sticking together a common problem during the production process. For metal surfaces that have to be particularly tough, like those of car rims or office furniture, powder coatings are often used (which also do not require solvents and thus have the further advantage of not emitting volatile organic compounds). Here, too, our Ceridust, Licowax and Licocene waxes have proven to be highly effective at improving both the production process and the surface of the final product, while our additives from the Hostavin, Hostanox and Exolit lines are the ideal candidates for improving light and oxidation resistance as well as fire protection. 22 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR INDUSTRIAL COATINGS 23

Good things come in SMART PACKAGES YES, WE CAN Our Ceridust and Licocene waxes open up new perspectives in effective container coating. They help to prevent metal markings and to improve scratch-resistance, while also acting as lubricants during production and assisting to reduce the risk of blocking. Food and beverage cans make what we eat and drink last longer. To properly serve that purpose, and to make foodstuffs easier to transport and store, the cans have to be covered in a kind of packaging themselves. The coating on the inside keeps the content from sticking to, taking on the taste of or corroding the inner surface. That on the outside protects cans and other metal packaging from scratches and scuffs and preserves the container s shine or gives it an attractively designed exterior. The coatings on cans and containers for cosmetics or paints fulfill similar functions. Our additives protect this»packaging«of the packaging. They help to keep the good things that come in metal packages fresh and usable for years and the packages themselves to look good on the shelf. 24 CLARIANT ADDITIVES FOR PACKAGING COATINGS 25
