3 WATERBASED FINISHES WATERBASED FINISHES Synteko waterbased sealers are for sealing wooden and parquet floors before applying Synteko waterbased top coats. Synteko sealers can be used on practially all wood species as well as on untreated cork. They are fast drying and ready to use. Synteko waterbased top coats are intended to use on hardwood and parquet floors, as well as on untreated cork floors and other wood products. They can be used on untreated or previously finished surfaces. All Synteko waterbased floor finishes are NMP-free, not -yellowing and low-odour. BEFORE USING THE FLOOR The floor can be used with caution 24 hours after the last coat is applied. Furniture can be placed after 24 hours. Allow the moisture to evaporate for 1 week before laying rugs. Final curing of surface after 1 week. Do not clean floor with water or detergents during the first month. Attach felt pads to the legs of chairs and tables in order to avoid scratching the finish. The surface must not be covered with non-porous protective materials. NB! Detailed information and instructions are provided on the Product Information sheet and MSDS (Material Safety Data Sheet). This document only presents a selection of key information. PLEASE NOTE! Waterborne floor finishes must not be covered with solventborne finishes. Oily and resinous wood species such as teak should be coated as soon as possible after machine sanding. All finishes should be shaken before use. Do this before vacuu ming so that the air mixed into the finish during shaking has a few minutes to escape before use. Wood that has been chemically treated or mechanically compressed can not be finished with waterborne finishes. Stained floors should not be sealed but finished directly with Synteko waterbased finishes. Do not apply more than two coats per day (sealer and/ or finish). Chemically pre-treated wood or mechanically compressed wood should be treated according to the manufacturer s recommendations. Do not use tape directly on the finished floor. Never use silicon products in the vicinity of finishing work. Bear in mind that tools must not be wet when you begin finishing. Check for water inside the roller. Remember that floor temperature can be much lower than air temperature. Turn off powerful mechanical ventilation systems prior to fini shing. Reduce the floor-heating temperature prior to finishing. The ideal drying time of the second and final coat should always be app. 2 hours to dust dry. Let the previous coat dry to a 10 12% moisture ratio prior to subsequent finishing. Frozen finish that has thawed can result in problems with air bubbles in the finish. WATERBASED FINISHES 5

14 PLEASE NOTE! During use, the oil should be at room temperature. The floor temperature should be between 20 C and 25 C (68 F and 77 F). The moisture content of the wood should be between 5% and 12%. Shake the can carefully before and during use. Do not apply areas larger than 25 m² at a time (10 m² at a time in good drying conditions). Do not allow unabsorbed oil to dry! Dried unabsorbed oil produces glossy spots on the surface. Too much oil will result in a longer drying time and longer time for over-coating. On wood with low absorption, leave some areas untreated during the first application. These areas will be filled during the redistribution procedure. The oxygen curing process will be extremely slow if the temperature is below 18 C. Floor heating system must be turned on during application and polishing. Do not polish the surface while warm so as to avoid bleeding back of the oil. When the finish is dried the room can be aired. Be sure to start regular maintenance before the surface is worn through to bare wood. 20 TECHNICAL FAQ TECHNICAL FAQ / First Coat FAQ Causes Corrective actions Sand back to bare wood. Apply the first two coats wet to wet and keep the finish in motion when applying the initial coat without going all the way to the wall. Uneven applicator finishing; finish has had time to dry between first and second applications. Visible applicator strokes, uneven colour after application of SEALER. Sand back to bare wood and re-finish. Poured finish has remained on the floor too long. The wood is absorbing excessive moisture and the finish is drying more slowly over these surfaces. Round, dark, miss-colourations approximately cm in diameter. Sand to bare wood and re-finish. Dark, narrow lines/scratches. Sanding scratches from coarse-grade sandpaper have not been sanded away; these absorb more finish and the colour darkens. Sand to bare wood and remove all white from the joint. Cellulose finish mixed with sanding dust has been used for filling. Finish has been applied before this has dried. White in joint between staves or boards. Remove the floor and relay it. Use correct finish for first sealer coat. The wrong type of finish has been used for the initial coat (adhesive properties are too good) and the wood has shrunk. Edge-gluing. The floor is without joints between boards, with the exception of some areas where the joints are very wide. Sand to bare wood and re-finish. Light areas after roller application. Too much air has worked into the lacquer and late overlapping. Excessively thick initial sealer coat has been applied. Perform a thorough intermediate sanding with used 120-grade paper or screen. Also flatten the surface gloss with an abrasive (maroon) pad. Course appearance, excessive grain raise, roller patterns, etc. Sand to bare wood and re-finish. Darker wood along the walls. 21 Finishing a wooden floor is not an assembly line job. Each floor is unique when it comes to appearance, condition, type of wood, etc. Each environment in which a floor is situated is also unique in respect to varying wear and the effects of everyday chemicals of different kinds. Temperature and humidity are other factors that can vary a great deal from one job to another. Choice of products and handling of the products must be changed according to the present situation. Synteko supports professionals treating wooden floors (finishing, oiling, cleaning and maintenance). Synteko s brand is oriented to a contractor who needs highquality finishing products and appreciates easy handling, good durability, natural look of the wooden floor, and stable product quality.
