roduct description Technical features EUROTHANE Bi-3A is a thermal insulation board with a core of rigid polyurethane foam with the taper along the longer dimension. The insulation board is faced on both sides with a bitumen coated glass fleece. 2 It takes only a few raindrops to make this house of cards collapse... but don t underestimate the influence of rainfall on your roof.

Why do flat roofs need sufficient slope? The slope, or fall, directs and drains the rainwater. If the slope is not sufficient, the large volume of water that falls on the roof during rainfall can create a dangerous situation. A light deck construction especially can deflect under the extra weight. In the worst case scenario the roof can even collapse. Defeatism? In the Netherlands, the VROM organization inspected the flat roofs in 80% of the cities. This showed that 6300 buildings may not be safe. A closer investigation of 1500 of these roofs showed that half of them were already in a dangerous condition! Other consequences of water accumulation on flat roofs are often underestimated. Water infiltration caused by leakages can damage the roof structure, internal decoration and the room s contents. Furthermore maintenance of the roof is particularly difficult due to ponding. When the drainage of the rainwater is too slow, any dirt stays behind and is the perfect medium for growing moss and micro-organisms that could attack the roofing membrane. Intermittant wetting due to ponding reduces the UV-protection and accelerates the ageing of the membrane. Good falls ensure regular self-cleaning of the roof. During wintertime standing water freezes. This generates tractive forces on the surface of the membrane. The risk on damaging the seams, coverings and the roof openings increases. Ice formation can even damage the slate granule covering of bitumen based waterproofing membranes. (*) VROM : Ministry of Housing, Spacial lanning and Environment Sufficient falls avoids water accumulation. What is sufficient falls? Sometimes the falls are created by building the deck on slope. In most cases this increases the cost of the roof and also the cost of the finishing of the ceiling in the rooms underneath. The fall is only in one direction and does not direct the water efficiently to the different rainwater outlets. Another technique of creating falls is using a concrete screed, insulated or not. One must consider in this case the extra weight and especially the extra construction moisture that will be trapped in the roof construction if the roof covering is installed early. 4 lay it safe, and bring out your trump card: on a flat roof not without any risk 3

What trumps do you hold with EUROTHANE Bi-3A? NUMBER 1 The tapered system provides perfect drainage for the rainwater. NUMBER 2 EUROTHANE Bi-3A ensures the required U-value of the roof. NUMBER 3 When applying EUROTHANE Bi-3A, it is not necessary to create falls in the underlaying construction. This is advantageous for the cost of the construction and early completion. NUMBER 4 The building is waterproof in a very short time. Immediately after finishing the deck construction the vapour barrier can be installed. The roof is ready for the installation of the tapered insulation. NUMBER 5 EUROTHANE Bi-3A boards are lightweight, 30kg/m 3. The insulation accounts for only a minimal additional deadload on the roof and allows a lighter roof construction. NUMBER 6 The waterproofing membrane is installed immediately after laying the tapered insulation. You do not need a period for drying. Completion times are shorter. NUMBER 7 The required U-value determines the thickness of the insulation layer. The excellent insulation value of EUROTHANE Bi-3A reduces the thickness at upstands, skylights, parapets etc. EUROTHANE Bi-3A offers a handfull of benefits In addition EUROTHANE Bi-3A boards are durable and tough. They are lightweight and so the installation is less labour intensive. The boards are pleasant to handle, easy to cut and accept pedestrian traffic both during installation and in service. They are compatible with most roofing membranes. A roof build-up with EUROTHANE Bi-3A offers excellent resistance against wind uplift. Recticel Insulation 4

EUROTHANE Bi-3A, for new buildings and refurbishment For new developments: - Completion time reduced. No additional concrete screed to falls has to be poured. Time for pouring and drying is saved. - Less risk when uncertain weather conditions. - The building is rapidly made watertight. - Lower weight and cost of the construction. For refurbishment: - Extremely suitable because of the small additional weight. - No entrapped moisture between existing and new waterproofing. - Recommended when available upstand heights are low. - Minimal thickening of the roof when switching from cold to warm roof. How much fall is recommended? In practice In practice, a fall of 16 mm per linear meter is usual. Due to unevenness in the roof structure and irregularities in construction the effective fall the fall that is actually achieved is often less than required and may not be enough to avoid ponding. We shuffle the cards for you Recticel Insulation recommends a minimum fall of 1,66 %, but we also offer the choice of a fall of 1,25 %. we put our cards on the table 5

Example of a tapered scheme Recticel Insulation 6

Who draws the tapered scheme? EUROTHANE Bi-3A tapered boards require a professional installation. To help you Recticel Insulation offers a free tapered scheme layout and bill of materials service. It is very important for a successful design that the drawings contain the following information : Roof drawing to scale with indication of the surfaces that need insulation The dimensions of the roof, the different levels, indication of expansion joints, the presence of any existing falls or steps, the location and dimensions of permanent projections such as roof lights, vents, etc.. A detailed roof section The position of the rainwater outlets The required fall: 1/60 (1,66 %) or 1/80 (1,25 %) Minimum and/or maximum thickness requirements The required U-value Enquiries can be faxed to the following number +32 (0)56/ or sent by (in Autocad or DWG-file) to: eurothane@recticel.com.
