Jason s Courtyard tricks Follow these hints and tips to ensure your AB Courtyard project is a success Maximum Freestanding Wall height: 750mm (5 courses) for freestanding walls! Maximum Pier Height: 900mm (6 courses) Maximum Height for Retaining Wall: 00mm ( courses). This is the maximum height for applications retaining soil including planter boxes and veggie patches! DOWNLOAD THE AB COURTYARD APP BEFORE YOU START! The app is an essential first starting point for your custom project! Always use the estimating feature on the app before building! STARTING TIPS! When building directly atop an existing paved or concrete surface, ensure the area is flat! In these applications, you do not need to glue blocks to the existing surface; the weight of the blocks will hold the wall in place, though if you wish for extra support, you can use a landscape grade adhesive to secure units onto the existing flat surface. adbri masonry

STEP : MEASURE AND MARK OUT Using a measuring tape, builders square and a pencil, mark the locations of your two piers. We recommend building a bench seat that s 400mm in length from the outside of the left hand pier to the outside of the right hand pier. It s a comfortable size and the seat timbers shouldn t bow. Use a pencil to mark the pavement surface so you know where to place your first blocks. Laying Pattern Course and Course Laying Pattern Course and STEP : BUILD THE FIRST COURSES OF PIER Using the AB Courtyard Corner blocks, build courses high using the patterns (see left image). Be sure to reverse your pattern on each course to maintain the stretcher bond pattern. Simply dry stack blocks on top of each other and push together. There s no glue, mortar or concrete required. Jason s Tip: The Corner blocks have an intentional taper where one side is slightly longer than the other. When building piers you must lay the blocks with the long side facing out! STEP : FINISH THE PIER The timber for your seat will sit at atop the rd course of blocks you have just finished installing. It s now time to finish the pier and build another two courses high using 4 blocks only (see left image) this creates a ledge which your timbers will sit on. Follow the pattern in the image to the left and remember to reverse your pattern on each course and lay blocks facing outwards! 4 Course STEP 4: PLACE THE CAPPING UNITS ON TOP OF THE PIERS At 5 courses high your pier is complete the last job is to complete the look by adding the AB Courtyard Pier Caps. Two caps are needed per pier. Make sure you have a friend handy for this part as the pier caps are heavy it s a two- person lift. Pier caps should be placed on top of the blocks ensuring they meet at a slight peak in the middle. You can either dry stack the caps or fasten down with landscape grade adhesive. If you are gluing down the caps, place a continuous line of adhesive to the top of the blocks and place cap. 5 STEP 5: CONSTRUCT THE SECOND PIER Find your pencil markings for the second pier and start building by following Steps and from above. 6 STEP 6: FASTEN THE TIMBERS TO COMPLETE Measure and cut 4 timbers to size using appropriate safety gear. If you re using a hardwood timber, wash and seal to reduce tannin stains. There are two options for fixing timbers. You can adhere the timbers to the top of the ledge blocks using landscape grade adhesive be sure to keep a small gap between timbers to allow water to run through. The second option is to screw a cleat to the underside of the timbers at each end this secure the timbers but allows you to pull up and move in one piece if you wish to keep your bench seat a mobile one! adbri masonry 5

4 5 Mark Mark First and odd courses Second and even courses AB Dublin /4 block STEP : MEASURE AND MARK OUT Using a measuring tape, builders square and a pencil, mark the start & endpoint of the overall length of the free-standing wall. From the end point of the wall length, measure back 600mm and make another mark this is the starting point of the second pier (the end of the wall). STEP : BUILD THE FIRST PIER Using the AB Courtyard Corner blocks, build 6 courses high using the patterns (see left image). When building piers, you must lay the blocks with the long side facing out! STEP : CUT AB DUBLIN BLOCKS The trickiest part of this project is ensuring a neat connection between the wall and the piers and because there is no interlock required, the focus is on creating a straight end to the wall blocks so they sit neat against the piers. This is achieved by cutting (with a wet saw or mallet and bolster), the full unit Dublin blocks into a / Dublin, a /4 Dublin and a /4 Dublin (see graphic to right). IMPORTANT: When splitting or cutting blocks, don t forgot your safety glasses, gloves & hearing protection. STEP 4: START YOUR WALL Cut for / block Cut for /4 & /4 block Start your first course with an AB Courtyard Dublin /4 block; randomly laying both AB York blocks and AB Dublin blocks until you reach the pencil mark for the starting point of the second pier. STEP 5: CONSTRUCT THE SECOND PIER Find your markings for the second pier and start building by following Step from above. Don t forget to use the cut or split Dublin blocks with straight ends to ensure the wall sits neatly against the pier. STEP 6: FINISH YOUR WALL 6 Using the guide (see left image), build additional courses starting against the first pier using the cut or split Dublin blocks. Always follow this pattern. Then, to fill the wall between the piers, randomly lay Dublin and York blocks to create a natural, unique looking wall. 7. AB Dublin /4. AB Dublin /. AB Dublin /4 STEP 7: FINISH BY FIXING PIER AND WALL CAPS The last step is to finish the look by capping the wall and the piers. The AB Courtyard system has specialty caps for both piers and the wall blocks so you will need both to complete this project. Start with the wall caps and with a landscape grade adhesive; apply a continuous line of adhesive to the tops of the corner blocks that make up the pier. Then, with the help of a friend, place two pier caps atop the pier so the caps meet at a slight peak in the middle and then push down firmly. It s now time to finish the wall caps, which again use landscape grade adhesive. Place a continuous line of adhesive along the front and back of the top course of wall blocks and firmly place down. adbri masonry 7

How to build a DIY Fire Pit AB Courtyard Project: Hours $ Budget Friendly DIY Beginner Level PRODUCTS NEEDED AB Courtyard York 8 weekend project AB Courtyard Cap Product Qty AB Courtyard York Blocks 56 AB Courtyard Caps 8 Materials Qty Tube of Landscape Grade Adhesive 0kg Bags of Crushed Rock 0 0kg Bags of Decorative Rock (Optional) 6 Metal Fire Ring (Optional) For a taller fire pit, add an additional 8 AB Courtyard York Blocks per course.

STEP : EXCAVATION After you determine the location of your fire pit, you will need to excavate the area. Lay the first course of AB Courtyard York blocks so you can mark the location of the where the blocks will be. Remove the blocks and dig a level trench 75mm deep and 78mm wide or excavate the full circle. Note: AB Courtyard fire pits can also be built onto level existing pavements. If you re building atop a rigid, level base like concrete or pavers the excavation step is not needed and you can skip to step. STEP : CREATING THE FOUNDATION Fill the trench with a weak mix of sand and cement, about 6: (6 parts sand and part cement). Take your time to ensure the foundation is level. Place 4 AB Courtyard blocks at the cross points of the circle and use a straight x4 and a level to check the entire trench is level. Make adjustments by adding or removing the sand and cement screed. 4 STEP : LAYING THE FIRST COURSE Place the base course of blocks on the foundation pad, checking each block for level from front to back and side to side before placing the next block. This will ensure a level base course. Jason s Tip: There are 8 York blocks per course! Knowing this can help you space out the fire pit and to ensure you order the appropriate number of blocks! STEP 4: SECOND COURSE Stack the next course of blocks, making adjustments as necessary. Once the second course is installed, remove any debris or vegetation from the centre of the fire pit area. Lay in approximately six kg bags of clean rock within the circle to cover the bottom of the fire pit. Then using a shovel, rake smooth. 5 STEP 5: FINISH WITH WALL CAPS Place AB Courtyard Caps on top of fire pit, securing them with a tube of landscape grade adhesive. 6 STEP 6: FINISHING TOUCHES Install decorative rock to line the interior of the fire pit. Place a fire pit of your choosing within the circular pit and you re project is ready to go! adbri masonry 9

STEP : CLEAR AREA AND PREPARE FOUNDATION After you determine the location of your Curved Seating wall, you will need to excavate the area. Fill the excavation with a weak mix of sand and cement, about 6: (6 parts sand and part cement) and screed level. Laying Pattern First and odd courses STEP : BUILD THE FIRST PIER Use 4 AB Courtyard Corner Units form the first course of your pier and build up 5 courses high using the laying patterns seen in the images (left). Be sure to reverse your pattern on each course to maintain the stretcher bond pattern. Simply dry stack blocks on top of each other and push together. There s no glue, mortar or concrete required. Second and even courses Jason s Tip: The Corner blocks have an intentional taper where one side is slightly longer than the other. STEP 4: LAYING THE FIRST COURSE OF WALL BLOCKS 4 Place the base course of blocks on the foundation pad, checking each block for level from front to back and side to side before placing the next block. This will ensure a level base course. The most important part of this step is to have a flush connection from the pier to the wall. To do this, you ll need to split the blocks with a mallet and bolster or cut with a brick saw. You need each of the cut pieces shown in the image to the left to build neat walls. Always wear PPE when using brick saws. Cut for / block Cut for /4 & /4 block. AB Dublin /4. AB Dublin /.
