Acknowledgement The SABS Standards Division wishes to acknowledge the valuable assistance derived from publications of the British Standards Institution. Foreword This South African standard was approved by National Committee SABS/TC 021/SC 04, Fire safety Firefighting equipment, in accordance with procedures of the SABS Standards Division, in compliance with annex 3 of the WTO/TBT agreement. This document was published in May This document supersedes SANS :2008 (edition 2). A vertical line in the margin shows where the text has been technically modified by amendment No. 1. This document is referenced in the Local Government: Municipal Structures Act, 1998 (Act No. 117 of 1998), the Local Government: Municipal Systems Act, 2000 (Act No. 32 of 2000) and the National Building Regulations and Building Standards Act, 1977 (Act No. 103 of 1977). SANS 1128 consists of the following parts under the general title Firefighting equipment: Part 1: Components of underground and above-ground hydrant systems. Part 2: Hose couplings, connectors, and branch pipe and nozzle connections. Annex A forms an integral part of this document. Annex B is for information only. Introduction This part of SANS 1128 allows only a 65 mm instantaneous connection as the standard final stage connection on any hydrant installation. This standardization is necessary to ensure that, in cases of emergency, firefighting equipment from different suppliers, or from local authorities or municipalities that have components of differing types, can be used in the affected area. Although a variety of intermediate connections is allowed, the final outlet should still be in the form of a 65 mm instantaneous connection. However, where a local authority does not incorporate a 65 mm instantaneous connection as the final stage connection, it is suggested that the authority should acquire and keep in proper working condition the necessary adapters to convert a sufficient number of its hydrants to the standard final outlet in an emergency. Reaffirmed and reprinted in August This document will be reviewed every five years and be reaffirmed, amended, revised or withdrawn.
