2 Algae and fungi have been the subject of numerous discussions and articles over the last few years. The microbiological growth on facades has been recognized as a widespread phenomenon for a long time. Particularly thermal insulated façades are affected to a high degree. To tackle this problem has been up to now mostly the choice of a product solution with biocide equipment. Nevertheless, we are convinced that the easiest way is not always the best because biocides are water-soluble. They are washed out successively due to weather influences which cause an impact on the environment, and moreover, they only have a very time-limited effect. Biocides are definitely not a cure-all against algae and fungi. This is why we have always questioned the use of biocidal products. Sustainability and sensitiveness for the environment should be our focus today and in the future. 2

3 AquaROYAL more than just an insulation system We want an alternative, which in its function and effect against algae growth is not based on the elimination of arising attacks, but benefits from the laws of building physics and thus minimizes the preconditions for infestation. This means in concrete terms: prophylaxis instead of therapy, respectively, moisture prevention instead of using poisons. 1. We are committed to ecology and sustainability. We show that algae prevention is possible even without the use of water-soluble biocides. 2. We utilize the laws of building physics. We concentrate on optimizing the moisture balance of coatings and systems: Reduced dew water formation, fast redrying. 3. We work according to Mother Nature, namely with the water (hydrophily), because an intensive hydrophobic treatment cannot prevent algae or fungi growth. For this, we utilize the capillary forces of mineral building materials (capillary activity) and control the structure s moisture balance by means of a regulated absorption of water. 4 Causes and risks for microbial growth The most important prerequisite for algae and fungi is moisture. Today, however, the moisture load by dew water is considered as more critical than moisture through rain. The phenomenon of dew water shows itself in form of little water drops on the façade surface. After all, the time periods during which dew can form as a result of the weather conditions are many times longer especially on insulated facades than in the rainy periods. The longer that moisture remains on the facade surface the faster occurs microbial growth. Dry facades work against it. 5 The dew water trap The current, market-common coating and thermal-insulation technology is based on thin-layer systems which have to be protected against the penetration of excessive amounts of moisture. The renders and coating materials are therefore highly water-repellent equipped which entails the development and formation of water drops during the dew periods. Moreover, the organicbound systems have a tendency to soil due to the thermoplasticity of their binding agent and thus offer nutrients for algae and fungi. In presence of this background, unfortunately, biocide equipment has now become a standard. Sustainable algae prevention In the interest of optimal algae prevention, a minimum moistening of the facade surfaces with dew must have priority. Consequently, product systems should be formulated and coordinated so that: wherever possible, no dew water in the form of condensation arises, the periods below the dew point are reduced, and that the surfaces remain clean. 5

6 Green defies biocides Particularly thermal insulated facades with organically bound coatings are often times attacked by algae growth. For this reason, organic coatings are equipped with biocides. Yet, there are many objects with biocidal equipment which show microorganisms anyway. Conventional ETIC system technology: hydrophobic - organic - thin-layered - biocide content In case of dew, a hydrophobic, organic surface leads to the formation of countless water drops and thus to ideal prerequisites for the growth of algae and fungi. The size of the water drops increases with any further dew load. The biocide content (watersoluble) washes successively out. The organic binding agent retards the redrying process. 7 AquaROYAL innovative system technology The precisely controlled water absorption of the hydroactive system structure prevents the formation of drops of dew moisture on the surface of the façade. The moisture is directly absorbed by the hydrophilic silicate coating. The surface remains almost drop-free. The moisture is temporarily stored in the paint coat and top coat render. The capillary-active moisture transport of the render layer and the high diffusion capability of the paint coat promote the fast redrying process. In addition, the thick-layered system structure ensures an increased heatstorage capacity thanks to the corresponding layer thickness and thus a delay in reaching the dew point temperature. Plus, the silicate coating reduces the soiling susceptibility. HYDROACTIVE mineral biocide-free AquaROYAL : hydroactive mineral thick-layered biocide-free The dew moisture is immediately absorbed by the hydrophilic paint coat. That avoids the formation of water drops. The surface remains mostly dry. Moisture is continuously absorbed by the hydroactive render layers, stored temporarily and released again. The capillary activity of the render and the mineral, highly permeable coating matrix provide a fast redrying. * Quantity of water on the surface 7

8 AquaROYAL behaviour in rain The hydroactive system structure of the AquaROYAL system is based on an exactly controlled water absorption in the sense of increasing the water repellency from outside towards the inside. Rain is absorbed by the hydrophilic paint coat and transported to the upper zones of the hydroactive render system. The capillary-active moisture transport of the render layer and the high breathability of the coating promote the fast redrying process. The insulation material remains permanently dry even when exposed to extreme weather loads thanks to the good water protection of the reinforcement layer. The system structure is safe from moistening and frost damages. 8

9 Protection and safety from microorganisms possibilities and limits From experience over the last years there is no 100 percent protection from microbial growth. Algae, fungi and lichens are omnipresent. They are survival artists par excellence and adapt to most different living conditions. To date we know about 20,000 types of algae and approximately 60,000 fungi. Algae and fungus growth is influenced by many factors. Those are primarily construction technology, climate, environment and material. A conscious selection of façade coatings can minimize the infestation risk. However, all protection mechanisms that are known and available today, if via toxic biocides or via building physical laws, show their performance limits in individual cases because of the variety of forms and influences. Contrary to a structural solution is the effect of using water-soluble biocides time-limited, plus, it harms people and environment. For this reason, the function of the hydroactive Aqua-ROYAL insulation system against algae is not based on killing the infestation with biocides. In fact, by using Aqua-ROYAL the laws of building physics have priority in order to minimize the prerequisite for attacks meaning to avoid dew water as far as possible. 9

10 AquaROYAL quod erat demonstrandum* The institute Fraunhofer for building physics examined en detail the functionality of the hydroactive AquaROYAL system both under laboratory conditions and in field trials. The hydroactive AquaROYAL system doesn t show almost any load of surface moisture, quite contrary to a hydrophobic, organic standard ETICS (see graphics 1). Corresponding test areas in field trials also confirm throughout the entire year quite distinctive differences in dew water quantities (see graphics 2 and 3), which demonstrates impressively the excellent structural properties of the hydroactive AquaROYAL system. The first external thermal insulation composite systems to save energy have been applied in Germany already 50 years ago. Time for a résumé. - Dirty facades with algal growth? - Unappealing facades with sound, existing ETIC systems? Also for the renovation of existing ETIC systems we concentrate on optimizing the moisture balance of coatings and take advantage of the laws of building physics for algae prevention with our hydroactive, thick-layered and biocidefree AquaROYAL-Reno system. All system-related components are used for renovation, except the insulation boards. 13
