1 Eastern Mediterranean University Department of Civil Engineering CIVL284 Materials of Construction Fall , Final Examination, 18 th January 2010, Instructor: Dr. Özgür EREN TIME ALLOWED: 60 minutes (Part A) minutes (Part B)=Total 3 hours Student Name-Surname: Student i.d. number: Question Mark (%) TOTAL Plese read before you start: 1. Calculators can only be used for Part A. 2. Do not borrow any material from your friends. 3. Do not ask any question to the invigilator and do not look around. 4. You can take Part B if you finish Part A earlier. 5. Write your answers neatly. 6. Do not forget to fill survey form and research assistant(s) evaluation form at the end of examination. Suppose that you have 5 different type of cements in your hand (Low Heat Portland cement- LHPC, Rapid Herdening Portland Cement-RHPC, Sulfate Resisting Portland Cement-SRPC, Ordinary Portland Cement-OPC). Which type(s) would you prefer to use for the following civil engineering works? (3%) a. Reinforced concrete bridge construction (normal wether conditions): b. Reinforced concrete dam construction: c. Reinforced concrete building close to EMU Beach Club: 6. What is the aim of calcination gypsum at 190 O C? (3%) 7. Below you can see the classification of limes according to chemical composition. Fill in blanks to specify the correct type of lime. (4%) calcium lime : (CaO 90%) rich, fat, caustic lime lime : 75 < CaO < 90% lime : MgO 20% (dolomitic) lime: MgO > 25% 8. Below you see 3 different grading conditions of aggregates. For each condition, discuss (a) friction among particles, (b) interlocking if used in concrete, (c) amount of voids among particles. (6%) Friction Interlocking Voids 1 9. During handling of fresh concrete, what are the two most important factors affecting the selection of method? (4%) CIVL284 Materials of Construction-Final-Fall Page 4
