Abstract Bridge clearances can vary from lane-to-lane beneath overpasses, and can often be difficult to measure due to high traffic volumes. Therefore, a mobile LiDAR unit was utilized in this project to obtain the bridge clearance heights on the Western Kentucky Parkway. The LiDAR information was collected at 400,000 points-per-second at a driving speed of 30 mph. Hand measurements were also taken on each bridge to assist in quantifying the potential error between field measurements and LiDAR measurements. The results of the collected LiDAR data appear to be less than 1.2 inches, which appears to be in line with both manufactures and industry standards. 17. 4 TABLE OF CONTENTS I. INTRODUCTION II. METHODOLOGY III. CONCLUSIONS APPENDIX A: Bridge Clearance Height Templates and Data Verification

5 I. Introduction Bridge clearance heights often vary between the roadway surface and the bottom of the bridge superstructure above the roadway. Often the original clearance heights are jeopardized after multiple resurfacing projects. Opportunities to measure the bridge clearance heights become difficult to determine in urban areas because of limited access to manually measure the heights by conventional methods. Therefore, the Kentucky Transportation Center has used mobile LiDAR technology to determine bridge clearance heights on the Western Kentucky Parkway. The collected LiDAR data has been processed and distributed to the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet in the form of vertical clearance templates for each overpass (Appendix A). This information can be used for routing super loads and/or verifying FHWA standards for highway overpass clearances. II. Methodology In an effort to aid the Kentucky Transportation Cabinet, Bridge Preservation Program, the Kentucky Transportation Center has used an Optech Lynx Mobile Mapping LiDAR system to scan the bridge clearance heights on the Western Kentucky Parkway and Interstate 69. In efforts to compliment the LiDAR data, hand measurements were taken in the field using a laser measuring device and a level rod. Upon completion of the LiDAR processing, KTC has determined that an approximate accuracy of +/- 1.2 inches between the LiDAR measurements and hand verifications has been achieved. To support our findings, KTC has found that Utah DOT has performed similar projects utilizing mobile LiDAR technology. They state the following: Early efforts appear promising, with indications of getting to an average accuracy level of +/- 3 cm" 1. or +/ inches with over 6000 miles of roadway scanned. Optech, the equipment manufacturer, lists an accuracy of +/- 5 cm or +/ inches. 2 Therefore, KTC believes its accuracies are within industry standards. III. Conclusions The Kentucky Transportation Center has completed the LiDAR data collection and processing on the Western Kentucky Parkway and Interstate 69. Upon reviewing the collected LiDAR data and hand verifications KTC believes its approximate accuracies are within +/- 1.2 inches and within industry standards for similar studies. 1. Ellsworth, Phil.
