2 11 Planning references Separator Basics General information Extract from DIN , Sec 9.2.4: "s must be provided in operations, in which starch-containing waste water accumulates." There are no national or European standards for starch separators at this time. Therefore, there are no general construction and inspection principles, no official approvals and no valid measuring rules. However, long-term experience is available for the installation and operation. Based on these experiences, the following principles and regulations must be observed; s must be connected to the grey water drains the effect of the starch separator is only guaranteed when emptied in time (max. filling volume = 50% of the total volume) and routine maintenance a content of the starch separator of 700 l per 1 l/s flow is required, so that the starch can settle perfectly The nominal size (NS) corresponds with the flow in l/s. The application scope Only starch containing waste water must be introduced into starch separators, i.e. only waste water from potato peeling machines is generally treated by starch separators. Waste water with other contents, for example, saponifiable oils and greases cannot be introduced. The principle Starch (mainly potato starch) is normally present in undissolved form. It has a higher density than water. Due to the difference in density, the starch may settle in the separator. The separator consists of a starch separation chamber and a starch collection chamber. In general, rinsing sprays are used in the inlet of the separators to crush the foam that forms. If separators are not used, the starch can settle in the drainage pipes and therefore may result in clogging. Since starch sediments and becomes a very solid mass, it can only be removed at considerable expense. 522

3 Separator Planning references 11 Dimensioning The dimensioning of the starch separator can alternatively be designed according to one of the tables below. For accumulations that exceed the details of the tables out, two starch separators schedule must be planned in a parallel arrangement, or each accumulation point must be separately secured by a starch separator. Dimensioning according to the capacity of the peeling machine kg/batch NS 3,5 0, The required NS must be defined when using several potato peeling machines. The total of the single values equals the NS of the starch separator to be planned. Example: The 1st machine with 8 kg/batch (= NS 1) plus the 2nd machine with 24 kg/batch (= NS 3) equals NS 4. Dimensioning according to the number of hot meals Number/day NS 900 0, This design method defines a potato content of 0.3 kilograms per meal served. By changing cooking styles and eating habits, this dimensioning method should be reviewed if necessary in individual cases in view of the excessive size of starch separator. 4 11 Planning references Separator Installation and materials s can be installed outside in the ground like grease traps or inside as a free-standing unit. The same regulations apply for the installation of such systems as for the grease separators (see chapter grease separators). ACO offers starch separators in polyethylene and stainless steel, for under and for free-standing installation. Emptying and disposal The starch separator must be completely emptied, cleaned and again filled with fresh water (process water or treated waste water from the starch separator itself, if it meets the local introduction conditions). Encrustations and debris must be thoroughly removed. The disposal intervals must be planned every 4 days, however, at least once per month by experienced personnel, depending on the operation-specific waste water composition. The disposal and transportation must be made by a licensed disposal company. The current waste legislation must be observed. An operating log should be maintained. Type and quantity of cleaning agents used, time of disposal, name of the disposal company, and possibly the whereabouts of the disposed material and the waste water consumption (monthly) should be recorded. Inspection The functionality of the system should be checked weekly by an informed and trained person. The volume of the deposited starch must be determined (max. ½ the separator volume) and coarse floating material must be removed from the water surface. Maintenance s must be maintained annually in the emptied and cleaned condition by trained personnel according to the manufacturer's specifications. Supervision All separators must be checked every five years by qualified personnel. Essentially the condition, density, requirements of the local agency, dimensioning, installation, proof of proper disposals and any other requirements are reviewed under the regulations of the country. The inspection report may be presented unsolicited, or presented upon request by the competent authority (Water Authority, municipal water treatment plant). 524
