2 TIPS FOR CIVIL CONSTRUCTION WORKS 1. ISI marked 43 Grade cement of major manufacture must be used. 2. ISI mark Steel must be used. 3. Clean & Fine Sand must be used for plastering of (FM 1.5) and for RCC, Lintel and Flooring Sand of FM 2.5 to 3.5 must be used. 4. Foundation of any building shall not be laid on filled up soil or in low-lying areas. 5. Plinth protection to the Building must be provided. 6. Use of angle-iron door & window should be avoided, instead of angle-iron pressed Steel Sheet must be used. 7. All Iron Frames & Doors should be painted properly; primer should also be applied to them before paint. 8. Provision of under ground Electrical fitting shall be provided in all New Buildings. 9. Symmetry of the Building shall be maintained while constructing new class rooms. 10. Pillar of the building can be Cylindrical in nature also. 11. Updated Social Audit green Board should be displayed in each school. 12. Contribution from VEDC or any other sources must be indicated on the Display Board.

3 13. All building & Toilet facilities should have ramps with hand rails with Slope of 1:12 ratio and appropriate width to facilitate the easy move of wheel chair. Ramp Surface should neither be too smooth nor too rough. 14. Instead of Black Board, Dark green pigment Board can be used. 15. At least 2 ft green pigment / Black student board must be provided at the student sitting height in the Classroom. 16. Sarva Shiksha Abhiyan Punjab pencil Logo must be provided in all SSA buildings

Washbasins & Urinal pots should be at a suitable height for students. 19. Cupboards & Slabs should also be provided in each room ( with at least one lockable self ) 20. All registers must be regularly updated at VEDC level. 21. Minimum three Quotations for major items must be evaluated. In case of absence of three vendors clear status should be brought forward and should be mentioned in the resolution register. 22. All proceeding of the VEDC must be regularly documented in the resolution Register. Cash books and vouchers should be properly maintained.

5 23. Thrashed roofs should not be used in the School. 24. Proper Beam support should be provided in the Building ,000 /- grant is for both drinking water & Toilet facility. 15,000 /- is for Drinking water & 20,000 /- is for Toilet Facility. In Case Submersible pumps are required VEDC or Community Contribution must be explored. 26. All fire safety issues must be properly handled. At least Red Colour Bucket filled with water & sand must be available in all school. 27. Tree plantation in addition to the neat and clean surrounding should be encouraged in the School premises. 28. Proper Sunshade should be provided for windows. Some of the options are shown below: (1) (2) 29. Proper enclosure for the drinking water facility must be provided. 30. Encourage Child Friendly elements in the Construction. Innovative ideas such as Snakes and Ladders on floor and the doors with angle marking on floor should be put up in every school.

6 31. Proper Documentation of the photographs at Foundation Level, Lintel Level & at completion of civil construction works must be kept by the VEDC. 32. CRC can be used as Classroom also, but no separation wall should be there in the CRC. 33. Contractor system is not allowed under SSA. 34. Building Stone should be of uniform Colour & texture. 35. All School Building & Additional Class room should have the provision for future expansion. 36. At the time of Lintel, concrete Mixer and Vibrators should be used. 37. First grade Bricks must be used for construction work. 38. No Katcha Shuttering shall be used for laying Lintel / RCC work. Steel Shuttering or Shuttering with good wooden planks shall be used. 39. In all new school constructions the outer side of the walls should be painted with ISI Mark cement based paint (Simo-sum). 40. The cement with date of manufacturing before three months should not be used. 41. Cement mortar or Cement Concrete should be used within 30 minutes after mixing water to it. 42. At least 15 Days curing is Essential for any Construction done with cement, in order to enable the structure to gain its proper Strength.

7 43. Earth insulation of proper thickness must be provided over the Flat roof with proper Slopes and should be covered with Brick tiles. 44. For School Building, 4 inch spout or rain water pipes for Draining rain water must be provided and also the roof of the building should be kept clean.

8 GENERAL ITEMS FOR MAINTENANCE / REPAIRS GRANTS ARE:- 1. White washing / Colour washing. 2. Painting of Black Boards, Children boards. 3. Repair of leakage roof, if any. 4. Repair / replacement of Doors, windows. 5. Painting of Doors and windows. 6. Repair / replacement of plaster. 7. Repair / replacement of flooring. 8. Repair of wall. Can also be utilised for:- a) Repair of Toilet / Drinking water Facilities b) Fencing / Boundary wall c) For Construction cupboards / Storage Spaces d) Ramps with handrails.
