1 SECTION PART 1 GENERAL 1.01 GENERAL REQUIREMENTS A. PART A and DIVISION 1 of PART B are hereby made a part of this SECTION. B. Examine all conditions as they exist at the project prior to submitting a bid for the work of this SECTION SCOPE OF WORK A. Perform the following work, as shown on the Drawings and specified herein: 1. Site demolition and removal operations, including the removal of all existing plantings, site structures, pavements, curbing, fencing, rubbish, lawn and other materials, within the limit of work line, not specifically designated to remain. Dispose of materials legally off site. Stock pile for reuse on the project those materials as shown on the drawings and specified herein. 2. Perform complete clearing and grubbing operations in areas shown on the drawings and remove all cleared and grubbed materials. 3. Inform the Architect of any materials or structures not shown on the site survey and various sitework plans and arrange for its removal from the site or protection as directed upon the Architect's request. 4. Construct fences, barricades, shoring, bracing or other temporary structures to perform the work of this Section and protect existing materials to remain. 5. Protect all existing utilities, structures, plants and materials to remain from damage due to construction. 6. Construct and maintain siltation control fencing. B. Items for removal and disposal include, but are not necessarily limited to: 1. Concrete pavement. 2. Bituminous concrete pavement. 3. Designated concrete and masonry steps, rails and retaining walls. 4. Designated trees, shrubs and lawn
2 5. Cast iron catch basin and manhole frames, grates and covers. 6. Catch basins and manholes indicated to be removed. 7. Curbing RELATED WORK SPECIFIED ELSEWHERE A. The following related work is to be performed under the designated sections. 1. Construct fences, barricades, temporary roadways and sidewalks and other construction controls required to protect persons and property: SECTION TEMPORARY FACILITIES. 2. Building demolition: SECTION DEMOLITION. 3. Stripping and stockpiling loam in areas indicated on the Drawings, excavation, backfill and establishing new grades: SECTION EARTHWORK. 4. Furnishing and installing new underground water distribution lines and structures: SECTION WATER DISTRIBUTION. 5. Furnishing and installing new storm and sanitary drainage lines and structures: SECTION STORM DRAINAGE and SECTION SANITARY SEWERAGE QUALITY ASSURANCE A. This Contractor shall verify dimensions and elevations on the ground and report any discrepancies immediately to the Architect in writing. Any discrepancies not reported prior to construction shall not be the basis for claims for extra compensation PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Examination of Conditions: This Contractor will be held to have examined the premises before submitting proposals for the work and to be fully aware of the existing conditions under which the work will be done or that will in any way affect the work under this contract, and also the amount of existing materials, items, and debris to be removed. No allowances will be made in this connection for error or negligence on the part of this Contractor ORDER OF CONDITIONS A. This project is subject to the regulations of the Middleton Conservation Commission and is herein part of the Contract Documents. Refer to SECTION ORDER OF CONDITIONS
3 B. In accordance with town of Middleton regulations, prior to any excavation or earth removal, adequate siltation control measures shall be constructed to prevent the runoff-silted water from the site. All catch basins shall be protected with filter fabric and hay bales as indicated in the Drawings to prevent siltation into the drain lines during construction. C. Site conditions, including erosion and siltation control, as required by the Order of Conditions shall remain in place and shall be maintained by the Contractor throughout the construction period
4 PART 2 PRODUCTS 2.01 DUST CONTROL A. Water for dust control shall be free from contaminants hazardous to human health and plant growth. B. No calcium chloride may be used DEMOLITION A. The drawings indicate the final location and finishes of all site materials required for the project. Existing site items to remain are specifically noted on the respective site drawings. All other site items shall be removed, rerouted, buried, disposed of as required to meet the final effect defined in these Specifications and/or shown on the Drawings. B. Existing items for reuse - remove items shown on the drawings to be reused elsewhere on site, or to be turned over the Owner, with care and using methods to prevent damage to the item EROSION CONTROL A. Fence posts shall be preweathered oak posts 4ʼ-6 long. B. Filter fabric shall be Mirafi 100x sedimentation control fabric local distributor A.H. Harris & Sons, Inc or approved equal. C. Straw bales shall be wire or nylon bound, in good condition and subject to review by the Architect
5 PART 3 EXECUTION 3.01 PROTECTION A. Pedestrian access to the adjacent sidewalks shall be maintained at all times. Erect, as required and/or directed, temporary walks, and barricades to maintain such access. Also, erect such structures when directed, to insure pedestrian safety during construction operations. Remove such temporary items promptly when no longer required in specific areas. See SECTION TEMPORARY FACILITIES AND CONTROLS. B. Erect and maintain temporary lights, barricades, warning signs, and guards necessary to protect streets, sidewalks and adjoining property from damage, all in accordance with applicable rules and regulations. See SECTION TEMPORARY FACILITIES AND CONTROLS. C. Wet down the areas being demolished as required to prevent dust and dirt from rising. D. Protect all areas and structures to remain undeveloped whether inside or outside the Contract limit lines. Should these areas be damaged, this Contractor shall restore them to the satisfaction of the Architect. This includes repairing and replacing all damaged elements, structures and materials. Materials required for repair, replacement and patching shall be provided by the appropriate Subcontractor. E. Protection of Existing Plant Materials. 1. Within the limit of work lines protect all plant materials to remain as indicated on the Drawings. No such plant materials shall be used as guys or other fastening. 2. Damage no plant by burning, by pumping of water, or by cutting of live roots or branches, or by any other means. If, in order to perform excavation work, it becomes necessary to cut roots of plants to be saved, such roots shall be neatly cut and painted with an approved tree paint after consulting the Architect. 3. This Contractor shall be responsible for the protection of all trees that are to remain. Existing trees, subject to construction damage, shall be boxed, fenced or otherwise protected before any work is started. Do not permit heavy equipment or stockpiles within branch spread. Any tree damaged by operations under this Contract shall be repaired to the satisfaction of the Architect by competent tree surgeons at the expense of the Contractor, and any trees damaged beyond repair shall be replaced by an equivalent tree. 4. Refer to SECTION EXISTING PLANTS TO REMAIN for additional requirements
6 3.03 CLEARING AND GRUBBING A. Clearing shall consist of the cutting and removal of all trees, logs, stumps, brush, roots and other objectionable material from within the Limit of Disturbance Line unless otherwise shown on the plans or directed by the Architect. B. Grubbing shall include the removal and disposal of all stumps and roots to a depth not less than eighteen (18) inches below subgrade under paving and other structures, and as required to accommodate all other improvements. C. Burning on the site shall not be permitted UTILITY STRUCTURES AND SITEWALLS A. All utility lines and structures under new structures or foundations must be completely removed. B. Abandoned Pipes or Conduits: 1. Plug previously abandoned drain pipes encountered with masonry brick at least 8 (eight) inches in thickness. 2. Electrical conduits encountered and previously abandoned shall be removed to the limits of excavation and then be capped or plugged. 3. Where noted on the drawings, fill existing pipes with concrete (flowable fill). C. Abandoned Structures 1. All inlets and outlets shall be plugged with at least 8 (eight) inches of brick and mortar masonry. 2. Except as noted, portions of masonry structures shall be removed to a depth of four (4) feet minimum, or as deep as required to facilitate new work. The structure shall be filled with sand or gravel backfill material placed in six (6) inch layers and thoroughly compacted at each level. 3. Where noted on the drawings, fill existing structures with concrete (flowable fill) CUTTING PAVEMENT A. Paving and edging to be removed that intersect with paving and edging to remain, and portions of pavements which must be removed for utility installation shall be saw cut in straight lines with power saws. Sawing shall extend through paved topping and underlying concrete. B. Paving and curbing to be removed, including all existing material within the limits to be removed, shall be removed to a depth of 24 inches below and parallel to adjacent pavement
7 3.06 OTHER REMOVALS A. All other existing material not designated to remain shall be removed in its entirety including both above and below grade components of each item. B. All existing items noted above not reused in this project shall be deposited or neatly piled or stacked in a location proposed by the Contractor for approval by the Architect. C. Any item not reused in this project and not selected by the Architect or specified as salvaged for the Owner shall become the property of the Contractor and shall be removed from the site and legally disposed of EROSION CONTROL A. Prior to any activity on the site, an erosion control fence with filter fabric backed by a double row of staked hay bales as shown on the Drawings shall be per Town of Middleton and/or D.E.P. standards. This siltation barrier shall be maintained to remain intact until all disturbed areas have been mulched, seeded, and stabilized to prevent erosion. All erosion prevention and sedimentation protection measures found necessary during construction by the town shall be implemented at the direction of town at no additional cost. 1. Erosion control fence and straw bales shall be placed in accurate lines, at the proper grades, with each piece butting the next. Under no circumstances will broken straw bales be accepted. 2. Contractor shall provide inspection and repair of silt fences/hay bales once every seven days and after every rainfall event of greater than.05 inches. Accumulated silt will be removed immediately, or at minimum when the depth of sediment reaches one half the height of the filter. B. The Contractor shall provide suitable and adequate means of sedimentation and erosion control during construction. Control measures shall prevent all wind and water caused erosion, siltation and sedimentation of stockpiled materials, wetlands, waterways, construction areas, adjacent areas and off-site areas. Work shall be accomplished adjacent to or in the following work areas: 1. Soil stockpiles 2. Cut and fill slopes and other stripped and graded areas 3. Constructed and existing swales and ditches 4. Adjacent to wetlands or other protected areas as shown on the contract documents
8 C. Means of protection as noted on the Contract Documents indicate the minimum provisions necessary. Additional means of protection shall be provided by the Contractor as required for continued or unforeseen erosion problems at no additional expense to the Owner. The Contractor shall be responsible to provide all materials and labor necessary to comply with the Order of Conditions issued by the Middleton Conservation Commission and as included in this Project Manual. D. Regular weekly maintenance of all sediment control structures shall be provided to ensure intended purpose is accomplished. Sediment control measures shall be in working condition at the end of each day. E. After significant rainfall, sediment control structures shall be inspected for integrity. Any and all damaged devices shall be repaired immediately. F. The following erosion control principals shall apply to the land grading and construction phases: 1. Contractor shall perform stripping of vegetation, grading, or other soil disturbance in a manner that will minimize soil erosion. Erosion control devices shall be installed prior to start of any and all clearing and grubbing operations and excavation work. 2. Contractor shall retain and protect natural vegetation, to reduce the impact of wind and water caused erosion within the work area. 3. Contractor shall limit the square footage of bare soil on the project that is exposed to wind and water caused erosion at any given time. Duration of bare soil exposure shall be limited. 4. Contractor shall use temporary seeding, mulching, or other approved stabilization measures to protect exposed areas during prolonged construction or other land disturbance. 5. Contractor shall install drainage provisions that will accommodate increased runoff that results from modifications of soil and surface conditions during and after disturbances. Such provisions shall be in addition to existing requirements and shall be installed at no additional cost to the Owner. 6. Contractor shall retain all sediment on-site. G. Cut and fill slopes and stockpiled materials shall be protected to prevent wind and water caused erosion. Slopes shall be protected with permanent erosion protection when erosion exposure period is expected to be greater than or equal to one month, and temporary erosion protection when erosion exposure period is expected to be less than one month. 1. Permanent erosion protection shall be accomplished by seeding with grass and covering with an erosion protection material, as appropriate for prevailing conditions, and as approved by the Ownerʼs Representative

Temporary erosion protection shall be accomplished by covering the exposed soil with an erosion protection material, as appropriate for prevailing conditions and as approved by the Ownerʼs Representative. 3. Except where specified slope is indicated on Contract Documents, fill slopes shall be limited to a grade of 2:1 (horizontal: vertical) cut slopes shall be limited to a grade of 1.5:1. END OF SECTION
