1 APPENDIX A: Additional Thesis Requirements Structural MAE Requirements The structural MAE requirements were carried out with the use of material learned in three MAE electives taken. Knowledge gained in AE 597A (Advanced Computer Modeling of Building Structures) was used extensively in order to model the gravity and lateral systems in multiple areas of the arena. A two bay computer model of the structural system that services the main arena concourses and roof was developed in order to design the structural members in the curved truss and lateral thrust resisting frames. For the east façade and lobby a full structural model was used in order to redesign the roof system and supporting structure for gravity loading. In the community rink design a typical two bay structural model was made to design and evaluate the structural performance of the kingpost truss and supporting structure. Also, in the community rink a structural computer model was developed to design the roof framing and supporting structure that would house mechanical units for the altered design developed by team ibuild. The use of the computer modeling software allowed for accurate simulation of structural building performance. The models used proper and accepted modeling techniques and assumptions including property modifiers, end releases, tension/compression limits, as well as any other assignments needed. It should be noted that the main arena two bay model and the community rink two bay model was made in SAP2000 and the gravity systems of the east façade and community rink were made in RAM Structural Systems. Using methods of analysis for lateral loading outlined in AE 597A and AE 538 (Earthquake Resistant Design of Buildings) the frames that supported the truss in the main arena were designed to support the thrust induced into the frames by the arched truss. Being currently enrolled in AE 542 (Building Enclosure Science and Design) helped bring important insight into the design and selection of systems used in team ibuild s design. This knowledge was especially helpful when collaborating within the group to determine the most appropriate system for the east façade and entrance to the ice arena. The structural student used design principles learned in class to assess and design the glass panels and mullions found in the east façade curtain wall system. Finally, in order to accurately design the wood glued-laminated members used in the main arena and community rink, knowledge from BE 462 (Design of Wood Structures) was incorporated into the analysis and design of the structural systems. Proper adjustment factors for glued laminated hardwood timbers were used and appropriate limit states and criteria were satisfied. Page 185 of 310
