This Presentation will show the general Salem area and the Salem Hills Oregon part. The Salem Hills are west of Turner, and the grades would be to much for the CHSR to go over the surface. The Cascadia High-Speed Rail corridor will stay mostly in a tunnel below the median of I-5. However the curves are to constricted to allow high-speed passage. Therefore an alternative corridor tunnel may be required. Current I-5 roadway overpasses need elevation lift, some overpasses need replacing anyway because of problems. For Salem Hill Tunnel Option Two, please down page. Des. By R.N. HSR Salem Hill

The Salem Hill Tunnel is a twin system so as to provide emergency rescue if needed. The cross cuts will have airlocks to block out smoke Salem Hill Tunnel - length estimated 6.5 Miles 10.5 Km 1025' 312.5m 1025' 312.5m Cross cuts to provide emergency escape 32 cross cuts will be needed 31.43' 9.58m

Tunneling This tunneling will use the gripper (hard rock) tunnel boring machine (TBM). Anticipated geology for lava strata in the Salem Hill area. We may start on the north side of the hill, then turn the TBM and drill the second tunnel from the south. The muck (excavated material) will be crushed, sorted and used for ballast, substrata fill, concrete production, and also will require some waste depository. The ballast and fills will be used in both directions, that is northwards and southwards.

Twin Bore Tunnel under construction, this is for long tunnel sections.

HSR twin bore tunnel entrances. The slots in the exposed tunnel section work as a wind impact damper, this will reduce air pressure shock to trains and un-comfortable pressure changes for passengers as well. Des by Spain

Typical short double track HSR tunnel in the country side. Note short open trench cut and in this case one larger tunnel diameter bore to accommodate the double tracks.

Tunnel option two will eliminate the I-5 curves. At four corners the track route will split, the northbound line will be on the eastside of I-5 and the southbound line will be on the west side of I-5. Tunnel length 5.9 miles S Hill Opt-2_01

The four corner stations will be on the outsides of I-5 and at the same elevations. South of the stations the CHSR will go on flyovers and the merge to the two track corridor. On fill each side E 222' Elv 248' grade 0.006% E 222' S Hill Opt-2_02 Double track, not shown in drawing E 209'

Note the tunnel muck sorting area where the mock will be sorted to create ballast, concrete aggregates and fill material. Materials will be transported via side-dump rail cars and then successively forwarded with conveyors for placement, no highway transport usage is needed with this mode.
