Hilti (New Zealand) Limited P O Box Penrose Auckland 1642 Tel: Fax: Web: Product 1.1 The Hilti CFS-SL are fire rated collars consisting of a corrugated steel tube with an inner plastic housing, intumescent material rings and tightly twisted inner fabric smoke seal. They are for sealing around electrical and communication services that pass through fire rated walls and floors. Scope 2.1 Hilti CFS-SL have been Appraised for use as fire collars for penetrations in fire rated walls and floors for sealing around electrical and communication services. 2.2 Hilti CFS-SL are suitable for use through the following fire rated systems with fire resistance ratings (FRR) of up to : Plasterboard lined walls with at least 26 mm lining thickness on each side, with light gauge steel or timber framing; and, Concrete or concrete masonry walls with a minimum density of 550 kg/m 3, a minimum thickness of 100 mm and a maximum thickness of 200 mm; and, Concrete floors with a minimum density of 550 kg/m 3, a minimum thickness of 150 mm and a maximum thickness of 200 mm. 2.3 Hilti CFS-SL must be used in closed, internal spaces, protected from excessive moisture, solvents, oxidizing agents, acids and alkalis. They should not be exposed to ultra violet (UV) light in service. Building Regulations New Zealand Building Code (NZBC) BRANZ 1222 Moonshine Rd, RD1, Porirua 5381 Private Bag Porirua 5240, New Zealand Tel: branz.co.nz 3.1 In the opinion of BRANZ, Hilti CFS-SL, if designed, installed, used and maintained in accordance with the statements and conditions of this Appraisal, will meet, or contribute to meeting the following provisions of the NZBC: Clause B2 DURABILITY: Performance B2.3.1 (b) 15 years and B Hilti CFS-SL meet these requirements. See Paragraph 8.1. Clause C3 FIRE AFFECTING AREAS BEYOND THE FIRE SOURCE: Performance C3.6. Hilti CFS-SL will contribute to meeting this requirement. See Paragraph Clause F2 HAZARDOUS BUILDING MATERIALS: Performance F Hilti CFS-SL meet this requirement and will not present a health hazard to people. 3.2 Hilti CFS-SL are an Alternative Solution in terms of New Zealand Building Code compliance. 2 Technical Specification 4.1 System components and accessories for Hilti CFS-SL that are supplied by Hilti (New Zealand) Limited are: Hilti CFS-SL Hilti CFS-SL come in two sizes: Hilti CFS-SL S is nominal 50 mm diameter; and, Hilti CFS-SL M is nominal 100 mm diameter. Hilti CFS-SL are zinc-coated, corrugated steel tubes with an inner polypropylene housing, intumescent material rings and tightly twisted inner fabric smoke seal of polyurethane coated glass fibre. They also have steel collar face plates that screw on to the outside of the steel tube to provide a flush finish with the wall that the system passes through. Hilti CFS-SL may also be known as Hilti CP 653, Hilti Speed Sleeve or Hilti Firestop Sleeve. Sealant Hilti CFS-S AFR is an acrylic based fire stop sealant, and is used with the Hilti CFS-SL to seal between the outer face of the Hilti CFS-SL and the wall or floor that it passes through. Hilti CFS-S AFR may also be known as Hilti CP 606. Handling and Storage 5.1 The Hilti CFS-SL are relatively robust, but must be stored in a clean and dry location in their original packaging prior to installation. Technical Literature 6.1 This Appraisal contains all of the Technical Literature information required for the Hilti CFS-SL. All aspects of design, installation, use and maintenance contained within the scope of this Appraisal must be followed. Design Information 7.1 An assessment of Hilti CFS-SL for compliance with AS and AS has been carried out and the resulting fire resistance ratings (FRRs) of walls incorporating Hilti CFS-SL are given in Tables 1 and 2. The FRRs of floors incorporating Hilti CFS-SL are given in Table 3. Concrete or Concrete Masonry Walls 7.5 Concrete or concrete masonry walls may be a minimum of 100 mm thick and a maximum of 200 mm thick. They must have a minimum density of 550 kg/m 3. Masonry walls must have all cells filled with grout. The wall must have an FRR at least equivalent to the required rating for the Hilti CFS-SL. Concrete Floors 7.6 Concrete floors may be a minimum of 150 mm thick and a maximum of 200 mm thick. They must have a minimum density of 550 kg/m 3. The floor must have an FRR at least equivalent to the required rating for the Hilti CFS-SL. Durability 8.1 Hilti CFS-SL meet code compliance with the NZBC Clause B2.3.1 (b), 15 years provided that they are used in closed, internal spaces, protected from excessive moisture, solvents, oxidising agents, acids and alkalis. They should not be exposed to UV light in service. Pg 3

4 Maintenance 9.1 Hilti CFS-SL installations will not normally require maintenance. However, if damage occurs to the installation, repairs or replacement of the sleeve must be carried out to ensure the integrity of the fire rated system. 9.2 Regular inspection of fire rated systems incorporating Hilti CFS-SL must be undertaken. If deterioration of the system is identified, then repair or replacement must be undertaken to ensure that the required FRR is maintained. Prevention of Fire Occurring 10.1 Separation or protection must be provided to Hilti CFS-SL installations from heat sources such as stoves, heaters, flues and chimneys Part 7 of NZBC Acceptable Solutions C/AS1 C/AS6 and NZBC Verification Method C/VM1 provide methods for separation and protection of combustible materials from heat sources. Fire Affecting Areas Beyond the Fire Source 11.1 Tables 1 and 2 give the fire resistance ratings (FRRs) that are able to be achieved using the Hilti CFS-SL and can be used to provide the FRRs as determined by NZBC Acceptable Solutions C/AS1 C/AS7 and NZBC Verification Method C/VM2. Structural Stability 12.1 In order to satisfy the requirements of NZBC C6 Structural Stability, designers must ensure that fire rated elements are supported by building elements having at least the same FRR as the fire rated element they are supporting. Airborne and Impact Sound 13.1 There is no noise attenuation information given for the Hilti CFS-SL system, and this must be considered by designers. Installation Installation Skill Level Requirement 14.1 Installation of Hilti CFS-SL must be carried out by contractors experienced in the principles of fire rated construction. General 15.1 Holes through which the Hilti CFS-SL are to be installed must be circular and orthogonal to the plane of the wall The recommended opening size for the CFS-SL S is a diameter of mm. The recommended opening size for the CFS-SL M is a diameter of mm Once the hole is drilled, the edges must be cleaned, and the sleeve, without the faceplates, installed in the hole. The sleeve should be located centrally in the hole such that an equal amount extends beyond the wall on each side The Hilti CFS-S ACR sealant is then installed right around the sleeve on each side of the wall. A complete seal must be obtained The steel face plates are then screwed on to the sleeve The flexible cloth sleeve through the centre of the Hilti CFS-SL is then sealed by twisting one of the red polypropylene housings in a clockwise direction The cloth sleeve can be opened again to install cables by pressing in the locking mechanisms on the polypropylene housing and turning it in an anticlockwise direction. Once the services have been passed through, the flexible cloth sleeve must be sealed about the services by twisting the red polypropylene housing in a clockwise direction again These installation instructions are shown diagramatically in Figure 1.
