6 Medical Technology in Progress When buying new medical-related devices, the buyers in private practices and hospitals are increasingly placing value on an appealing and ergonomic design. In the case of equal functionality, the design and aesthetics can therefore be crucial to the market success of a new device. The polyurethane material, abbreviated PUR, offers diverse options here. PUR not only offers the designers extensive design and construction flexibility, but also exhibits particularly favourable material properties which are significant for medical applications: For example, low weight, electronic shielding capability, chemical resistance, sound insulation, and easy cleaning. A favourable cost structure of the PUR process is also a factor here, which has a particularly positive effect on the typically low unit quantities in medical technology of a few hundred to a few thousand parts annually.
