1 KINGFIELD CONSTRUCTION PRODUCTS PURAFLEX Chemical & Hydrocarbon Resistant Membrane KEY FEATURES Puraflex VOC membrane is a high performance hydrocarbon and chemical resistant barrier with exceptional resistance to a wide range of pollutants including hydrocarbons, industrial chemicals, toxic waste, natural and radioactive gases. Puraflex VOC is part of a complete hot-welded waterproofing system containing Puraflex VOC 18mil non-adhesive membrane, Puraflex Tank 25mil bituthane self-adhesive tanking membrane, four inch Puraflex Seem strip, and Puraflex Primer. Puraflex VOC high performance membrane comprises a chemical resistant core sandwiched between two protective polymeric layers. Puraflex VOC has a flexible and robust membrane construction with excellent resistance to both puncturing, tearing, stress cracks, and undulating ground contours. Puraflex is independently tested to ASTM, BS, EN, and EPA standards. Puraflex Composite Waterproofing System Polymer Barrier Membrane for Environmental Protection Horizontal/Vertical & Blindside/Positive Application PROTECTION & REPAIR All welded and non-welded areas of the Puraflex VOC membrane should be inspected for defects, holes, blisters, un-dispersed raw materials, and any sign of contamination by foreign matter prior to covering. The surface of the membrane should be clean at the time of inspection and free from debris. Following installation of the membrane, the installer and specifier should assess the requirement for additional protection prior to the positioning of reinforcement and pouring of concrete. If additional protection is required, contact the Kingfield technical representative. If the Puraflex VOC membrane is damaged, it should be repaired by means of patching. Pinholes and small holes can also be repaired via patching. The patch should be made of Puraflex VOC membrane and should extend at least 6 inches outside the damaged area in order to ensure that the damaged area is covered completely. The patch should be prepared and welded using a hot air gun with a fishtail nozzle. The two surfaces to be welded are heated with the hot air gun until melting occurs on both surfaces. Pressure is then applied to the patch by means of a hand roller until the weld cools. CR 1.5mm INSTALLATION For a warrantable installation, it is required that the VOC membrane is jointed using conventional thermal (hot air/wedge) welding equipment to provide adequate protection against VOC, chemical, ground gas and moisture ingress. All laps and junctions within the membrane should be overlapped by a minimum of 6 inches. Any penetrations within the membrane should be effectively sealed using the appropriate Kingfield recommended accessories and details. The membrane should be installed upon a suitably prepared level surface consisting of a well compacted sand layer or concrete blinding of a minimum 2 inch depth. Surfaces should be swept clean and free from any sharp edges or protrusions. For further information on the installation of the VOC membrane please refer to the separate installation guide, available from Kingfield s technical team upon request. Chemical Permeation Comparison STORAGE & HANDLING Care should be taken when moving, transporting, or handling membrane to avoid physical damage, puncturing or tearing which may affect the performance of the membrane. When rolls are stored in their protective shipping boxes, they should not be stored more than three boxes high. When the roll is removed from its box, it should be stored on a prepared smooth and dry surface (or fully boarded wooden pallets; note that slatted pallets with sharp corners will damage the bare rolls) and stacked no more than two rolls high. The bottom rolls need to be chocked to prevent them from rolling. The membrane should be stored under cover to protect from puncture, dirt, grease, moisture, sunlight, and excessive heat. Storage between ºF at 40-65% humidity under non-condensing conditions is recommended. 2 Puraflex Composite Waterproofing System Applications Vapour & Gas Barrier Protection The migration of hazardous gases and vapours from both natural and man-made sources places restrictions on buildings by posing a risk to end users. These hazards include explosions, building failure and asphyxiation, all of which can be resolved with the installation of a suitable vapour and gas barrier membrane such as Puraflex. Foundations are designed with under-slab ventilation to carry vapour and gases away from the construction and prevent any build-up of vapour and gas. Puraflex is welded on-site to provide a continuous barrier above the ventilation layer to prevent the ingress of vapours and gases into the building. One-piece pre-fabricated panels can also be supplied. Structural EPS Protection Used on many civil engineering and groundwork projects, Expanded Polystyrene (EPS) is a cost-effective fill material in structural load bearing installations. EPS is however vulnerable to attack from hydrocarbon vapours and liquids. Dissolution of EPS is initiated by any contact with these hydrocarbons leading to structural failure. EPS blocks are protected by encapsulating them with Puraflex and fully welding all the seams. This encapsulation process protects the EPS from the migration of hydrocarbon solvents preventing the dissolution of the EPS and thereby increasing the service life of the construction. Protection of Attenuation Tanks As the built environment expands, more innovative solutions are required to control surface waters to prevent flooding and watercourse contamination. Sustainable drainage systems (SuDS) are used to manage surface water. Encapsulating SuDS prevents water from being polluted by soil contaminants. Puraflex is used to encapsulate attenuation tanks to prevent hydrocarbon contaminants present in the soil from migrating into the water storage system. Hydrocarbon contaminants would not only pollute watercourses, but may also compromise the structural integrity of the system if the polymeric materials are vulnerable to chemical attack. Secondary Containment Protection Secondary containment is necessary to protect the environment form industrial plants and storage installations where potentially hazardous chemicals are stored. Liners are also widely used in heap leaching and evaporation ponds. These containment solutions allow for the storage of chemicals without contaminating the surrounding environment. Self-adhesive Tanking Membrane Tanking membranes are commonly used for waterproofing and to line storage vessels and underground structures. Hydrocarbons and other aggressive chemicals may permeate with relative ease through the common mono-polymer membrane materials. Puraflex is widely used as a basal liner or as a liner for an existing structure. Puraflex lining structure was prefabricated under factory conditions ensuring the integrity of all welds. It was then folded up and transported to site prior to installation. Puraflex Tank incorporates an adhesive backing to provide a simple and easy installation to primed surfaces. Tanking out tunnels and other underground structures with Puraflex Tank prevents the ingress of hydrocarbons and other chemicals Page 2 of 7
