Siphonic System Elements Guide All Geberit Pluvia rainwater systems in the UK and Ireland are installed by fully trained Approved Installers, who will prepare the final design for the project and will check at all the construction stages should there be any variations to the design that the system will operate siphonically using the Geberit Pro- Planner software. The Pluvia roof drainage system consists of: Geberit Pluvia roof outlets Geberit HDPE drainage system Geberit Pluvia fastening system Geberit ProPlanner design software 1. Siphonic System Elements 1.1. Pluvia Roof Outlets 1.3. Geberit Pluvia Fastening System The Geberit Pluvia fastening system was developed for the installation of horizontal pipework. Advantages of the rail system: Quick installation Fewer ceiling fastening points Controls thermal movement No expansion because of rigid installation No expansion sockets in the horizontal pipes Simple prefabrication is possible One fastening for anchor and sliding brackets The expansion and contraction of the pipework is prevented by the rail system as the properties of HDPE allows rigid fixing. Pluvia Rail Threaded Rod M10 Tension Wedge Geberit Pluvia outlets are developed for all types of roof structures. Due to the different discharge rates of the outlets (12 l/s or 25 l/s) an economical layout of the roof drainage system can be reached. The wide range of contact sheets and accessories allows connection to most roof finishes Geberit HDPE Drainage System Pluvia Bracket Connector to Rail Fig. 1: Geberit Pluvia Rail System Rail Clamp Geberit ProPlanner Design Software The highly advanced software package easily allows the calculation of the most complex roof projects. The Geberit HDPE range of pipes and fittings complements the Pluvia outlet to provide a total drainage solution. Geberit HDPE is available in diameters 40 mm mm, and can be jointed in a variety of different methods including electrofusion, butt welding and mechanical coupling. The outstanding material characteristics of Geberit HDPE allow specifiers and contractors to design and pre-fabricate pipe runs away from the site of the installation. Pipe runs can be created in a safe, clean environment ensuring secure and accurate fabrication as well as considerable material and labour savings Manufactured to BS EN 1519: All pipe diameter 40 mm to 315 mm are available to at least PN 4 specification and are suitable to -800 mbar negative pressure Pipe in 200 mm to 315 mm diameters are also available to PN 3.2 specification and are suitable to -450 mbar negative pressure Fig. 2: Geberit ProPlanner Geberit Pluvia Product and

Methodology for Designing the Pluvia System It offers distinct advantages: Convenient and very easy to operate Considerable time savings BBA approved Meets the BS8490 Code of practice for siphonic systems Provides - Isometric drawings - Hydraulic calculations - Material list incl. fixing components - Cost calculation with ready to mail tender documents 2. Methodology for Designing the Pluvia System 2.1. Step 1 Determine the roof(s) drainage patterns 2.2. Step 2 Calculate the areas of roof(s) draining to each outlet 2.3. Step 3 Determine the rainfall intensity rate Method A Geberit recommend using 108 mm/hr (0.03 l/s per sqm). In the UK and Ireland this figure provides a frequent return rate for a 2 minute storm which ensures the systems self cleansing routine is activated Method B Use the method and data provided in BS EN part 3. We do however advise against using the very high rainfall intensity rates that can be generated if long life spans for the building and high safety factors (categories) are used in the calculations. Example: Project located in London requiring 25 year life span protection, Category 3 Safety Factor. This will result in a rainfall intensity rate of 236 mm/hr. In reality this will mean that once every years for 2 minutes there may be a storm with a rainfall intensity of 236 mm/hr. Using this high rainfall rate will result in the systems pipework being massively oversized, which will result in the system not operating siphonically frequently, requiring a high level maintenance programme to check for silt build up in the pipes. Geberit recommend using the rainfall rate mentioned in Method A and allowing any potential higher rate rainfall to temporarily accumulate on the roof (for valley gutters this may require some over sizing of the gutter to provide additional storage capacity). Example: If the 236 mm/hr protection is required, design a primary system to cope with 108 mm/hr. Given: Required rainfall intensity rate: 236 mm/hr Recommend rainfall intensity rate: 108 mm/hr Required: Build up from the excess over 2 minutes (1/30 hr) [mm] Solution: 236 mm mm = 128 mm hr hr hr 128 mm hr = 4.3 mm hr Build up = 4.3 mm If the above mentioned temporary storage method is not acceptable then one of the three options below may be used: Option 1: Weir overflows in the parapet walls Option 2: A secondary siphonic overflow system Option 3: A separate internal overflow system (gravity) In all roof designs an emergency / warning overflow must be provided to indicate a blockage within the system. 26 Geberit Pluvia Product and 2013

Choosing the Correct Pluvia Outlet 3. Choosing the Correct Pluvia Outlet 3.1. Outlet Types l/s Outlet Fig. 3: 12 l/s Outlet 3.2. Overflow Provision All roofs should have some provision of emergency overflow to protect the building from unplanned build-up of water on the roof or in the gutter. This can take form of: Weir overflows in the parapet wall or gutter ends Stand pipes through the roof or gutter discharging via pipes to the ground Secondary gravity or siphonic system which incorporates an internal adaptor in the outlet which prevents water from entering the system until it reaches a depth of at least 55 mm. This system can also discharge at ground level (not connected to the drainage system) due to its infrequency of use plus to give an indication that the roof is flooding for some reason Geberit overflow adaptors can be installed in the 12 l/s and 25 l/s type outlets. Fig. 6: Geberit overflow adapter for 12 l/s outlets Fig. 4: 12 l/s Promenade Outlet On a flat roof or in a wide gutter (1 m min. width) In a narrow gutter (min. width 400 mm) * With a horizontal spigot less than 100 mm from roof deck to centre of pipe * Narrow gutter must be at least 100 mm wider than outlet diameter Flow Rate l/s l/s l/s Fig. 7: Geberit overflow adapter for 25 l/s outlets l/s Outlet Fig. 5: 25 l/s Outlet Flow Rate On a flat roof or in a wide gutter (1 m min. width) l/s In a narrow gutter (min. width 420 mm) * l/s * Narrow gutter must be at least 100 mm wider than outlet diameter Geberit Pluvia Product and

System Installation Requirements 4.1. Connecting Various Roofing Materials to Outlets Geberit outlets are available in various forms: Fig. 18: All metal with a 500 mm square flange suitable for bonding to liquid bitumen 5. System Installation Requirements 5.1. The Internal pipe work that makes up the siphonic system must follow the following rules All pipe work must be Geberit HDPE All horizontal pipe work must be laid level (no fall unless agreed with Geberit) All horizontal pipe work joints must be either butt welded or electrofusion welded (no mechanical or seal ring joints) Vertical pipes may be either welded or seal ring jointed Horizontal pipes must be restrained to prevent thermal movement preferably with the Geberit Rail System Fig. 19: Clamping ring version to accept waterproof sheet held mechanically Fig. 20: With 'clamp in' foils of numerous material to suit a large number of roofing membrane types All vertical seal ring fittings if used must be anchored with a suitably strong bracket (12 mm stud) All pipe diameters must follow the design created by the Geberit ProPlanner software and to checked at all changes in pipe route by the Geberit Approved Installer before final sign-off All changes in direction or branch connection must be made using 45 degree fittings. The only exception to this is immediately below the outlets where a 90 degree bend may be used Only one reduction in pipe diameter is permitted at the top of the main vertical drop if the software permits it Fig. 21: Metal outlets are also suitable for hot applied mastic asphalt dressed into the bowl 30 Geberit Pluvia Product and 2013

PluviaFlex System an Alternative Approach to Installing Pipe Work 5.4. Siphon Break Methods At the point where the siphonic system connects to the gravity drain the siphonic action must be stopped. This is achieved by doubling the cross sectional area of the pipe bore (point A) using one of the methods show below. The gravity drain (B) must be sized to accept the flow without surcharging. 6. PluviaFlex System an Alternative Approach to Installing Pipe Work The PluviaFlex system has been developed to offer an alternative method of installing the horizontal pipe work without using fixed anchor points or rigidly fixing the system to prevent thermal movement. The flexible hose will allow the pipe work to expand and contract within limits. Fig. 28: Method 1: Below Floor Slab Fig. 33: PluviaFlex System General information on the PluviaFlex system The installation temperature must be between -10 C and +50 ºC. (The change in length of the PE materials has been taken into account in the design of the PluviaFlex components with a corresponding Δt) Fig. 29: Method 2: Above Floor Slab Fig. 30: Method 3: After Sealed Access in Manhole Support shells and insulation against condensation may not be used with the PluviaFlex system. (These would negatively affect the necessary sliding effect) The length of straight pipelines may only be max. 50 m Each downpipe of the PluviaFlex system must be equipped with a fixed point at the direction of change or after the diverting zone area No fixed points may be installed in the entire system (except for downpipe) Fig. 31: Method 4: Minimum Distance before Manhole Fig. 32: Method 5: Open Pluvia Systems are not permitted Geberit Pluvia Product and

Testing of System 7.4. Geberit Pluvia Rail Fastening System Dimensions Pipe diameter [mm] Bracket [mm] A B C D E F Maintenance Maintenance of System Geberit recommend that a maintenance programme is always implemented on completion of the project. The intervals between inspection will depend on the location of the building. The maintenance programme should include: 1 2 Clean all outlets of any debris or silt Remove lid M10 drop rod Geberit Pluvia bracket Geberit Pluvia Rail Tension wedge 3 Remove function disc Geberit HDPE pipe B C F b A E D 4 Rinse function disc with water Fig. 34: Guide brackets on rail 40 mm mm M10 drop rod 40 B C HDPE pipe A F 5 Wipe outlet with cloth D E Geberit Pluvia support bracket Fig. 35: Guide brackets on rail 250 mm mm 8. Testing of System On completion of a Geberit Pluvia system the integrity of all joints must be tested using an air test as described in BS EN 12056, which in general requires a 38 mm air test for 3minutes If the installation has been designed using the Geberit software it is not normally necessary to performance test the installation. Third party approval by the BBA included verification that the software is a true reflection of the actual flow performance. 6 7 Check that no pipes connecting to outlets are blocked with silt etc., if blockages are found they can be removed by using a water jet through the outlet after removing the lid and function disc as shown above Ensure all outlets have gratings and tops in place.
