8 Production methods EXTRUSION VULCANIZATION Our employees are driven by their love for details plastics into perfect shape by our extrusion process. Hoses are exposed to many influences. Here is how we make them durable. The term extrusion is from the Latin extrudere, meaning to press out or drive out. In the extrusion method plastics are pushed through a jet in a continuous process. In this process the plastic the extrudate first has to pass through a so-called worm extruder or screw extrusion press, so it melts and becomes homogenized through heat and internal friction. In addition, the pressure required for passing through the jet is built up in the worm extruder. After leaving the jet, the plastic usually sets in a watercooled calibration. Convincing solutions (Tape Extrusion) At SHP Primaflex we use an automated tape extrusion process to manufacture hoses. With our specialised machine technology, we process various materials such as PVC, polyurethane (PU) or thermoplastic elastomers (TPE) and manufacture hoses using foil extruded in various ways. Strong alternatives (Flex Extrusion) Utilising technology unique to SHP in Germany, we are able to manufacture hoses using a flexextrusion process exhibiting excellent flexibility, durability and tensile properties. Hose construction incoporating axial and helical yarns, provide unique properties compared to similar products without yarn reinforcement. In 1839, Charles Goodyear developed the chemical process of vulcanization. Through a process of applying pressure over a period of time at a high temperature, polymers are made resistant to atmospheric and chemical influences as well as giving them superior mechanical properties. Vulcanized materials have permanently elastic properties and revert to their original shape after stress is applied to them. In addition, vulcanized materials are more tear resistant, elastic, and resistant to ageing and exposure to atmospheric conditions. Superior know-how Before the hose is put into the furnace for vulcanization, premium raw materials, a great deal of manual labour on semi-automated machines and highly specialized expertise is required. We process neoprene, silicone and special materials such as Viton or Hypalon in the vulcanization process. Due to our years of experience in vulcanization, we are able to produce advanced products at a consistently high level of quality. The hoses we produce stand out for their high flexibility, very low weight, and long service life, even at constantly high temperatures

9 Production methods INJECTION MOuLDING SEWING We tightly join what belongs together. Our fabric parts strive for a very close fit. The same applies to us and our partners. Injection moulding is a manufacturing process for plastic parts. In this process, plastic laminates are plasticized and then injected into a hollow space (moulding cavity) of a tool. Normally the molten plastic solidifies during the cooling phase in the mould. The injection moulded part can then be removed from the mould, which is referred to as demoulding in industry jargon. Truly excellent accessories The end pieces which are manufactured using this process are called sleeves. They can be made from various materials and be of any conceivable shape or size. In our injection moulding department the plastic parts ordered by customers as custom-moulded end pieces are injection moulded directly onto the hose. This creates a perma- nent connection between the hose and the injection moulded part. It is a perfect connection fitting for the hose for later use at the application site. Welding a unique tunnel technology In order to securely guide cables and additional hoses we are able to equip different hose types with a special tunnel on its exterior. The high degree of flexibility of the primary hose is maintained. In addition, our patented thermo-isolating tunnel design for hot media provides safe heat protection. Sewing is the general term for connecting two pieces of material by way of a seam. Technically speaking, this is done with needle and thread or by using a sewing machine with an upper and a lower thread. Anywhere from lightweight PVCcoated fabric all the way to heavy textile made of material resistant to high temperatures. 14 Individual solutions PCA AIR TRANSPORT SYSTEMS CONSISTENTLY GOOD AIR WITH THE PCA AIR TRANSPORT SYSTEM. Flexible air transport systems for aircraft PCA stands for preconditioned air. PCA comes from a central airport A/C system or from an A/C unit installed in the passenger jetway. The PCA ducting system establishes a connection between the airport s and aircraft s A/C system. This allows cabin air to continue to be air-conditioned without running the plane s own A/C system, which is supplied by the auxiliary turbines (AHU). Aircraft exhaust at airports leave a large environmental footprint throughout the world. These exhaust fumes result from aircraft leaving their GPUs and auxiliary turbines running and thus consuming jet fuel while on the ground. Serious damage is done to the planet's climate by noise and exhaust which could easily be avoided through the use of technology available today. At airports without a PCA ducting system, aircraft rely on their own auxiliary turbines or a ground power unit (GPU). Unfortunately, at most airports aircraft do not shut off their auxiliary turbines and thus release large amounts of unfiltered exhaust into the environment, although a 10 % reduction in energy consumption is possible by supplying aircraft via the airport s central air-conditioning system. Emissions which are harmful to health can be prevented by using a PCA ducting system. The problem is caused by a lack of PCA units at most international airports. There are currently only few PCA systems installed at airports in Europe

21 Universal solutions PU Hoses Temperature range 40 C to +90 C OUR PU HOSES ARE ANYTHING BUT COMMON. PU hoses PU material in general Polyurethane (PU) hoses: manufactured by SHP Primaflex in Germany. PU hoses are made of polyurethane, are abrasion-resistant and universally deployable for the extended medium temperature range (ether-polyurethane or ester-polyurethane). At our production facilities we manufacture a wide range of PU hose versions differing in construction, design and material. Compared with conventional PU hoses, all PU hoses by SHP Primaflex have a particularly smooth interior which enables a better material flow. In some cases this can lead to a longer service life. Our machines manufacture products with a spring steel spiral embedded in the wall or a spring steel spiral fixed to the wall. Different designs of these standard products allow a deployment in nearly all fields of application. Should you have any other special operating conditions, we are able to modify the properties accordingly and produce the hose tailor-made for your application. Whatever the application purpose should be we deliver the optimal PU hose. And we do this within a short period of time at a competitive price. Polyurethane (PU) is a modern and versatile type of plastic and offers an interesting combination of properties it is elastic, resistant and non-aging when used in a wide range of temperatures. Moreover, the properties of PU can be modified by adding additives and adapted to certain operating conditions. FACTS what makes a PU hose from SHP Primaflex special? PU is more flexible, more robust and more abrasion-resistant to abrasive or aggressive materials and many chemicals. This increases the service life of products made of PU. In contrast to PVC, polyurethane is free of plasticizers. Most PU hoses are transparent so that the material flow can be monitored and controlled. Abrasion-resistant Less abrasion than rubber or soft PVC, i. e. better service life when used for conveying purposes. Flexible Also in cold temperatures. PU Col 40 C to +90 C Coloured versions of various Primaflex PU hoses. High transparency allows good monitoring of the inside of the hose. The use of different colours for different applications is possible, e.g. colour coding cold or hot media lines or colour coding the intake or outgoing air sides. Additional benefit: Hoses in corporate colour are also available. PU Eco 40 C to +90 C The Primaflex hoses of the PU ECO series are manu factured of PU granulate which was made from renewable raw materials. These hoses help reducing CO 2 emissions and as various tests and applications show are high-quality alternatives to classic polyurethane elastomers. And when it comes to some properties and chemical resistances, the new PU ECO products are even superior to conventional synthetic-based hoses. NEw 44 45
