2 1. Intrductin Our seeking fr the prper exterir material which is durable, intimate t peple and crrespnds t the aesthetic cncept f the twn carne t the cnclusin that the brick is the prper material. Hwever, the traditin f brick masnry in Japan is shrt and there are sme prblems ccuring frm the shrtage f experience. T slve these prblems, the new building material t frm appearance f the brick cnstructin was develped. They are interlcking cncrete blcks surfaced by thin bricks. These special units cmbine high prductivity f cncrete blck and beautiful appearance f brick tgether. The anther merit f these units is easy and fast installatin at the cnstructin site. This paper reprts n this new cmpsit unit f the facing brick and cncrete blck mlded tightly tgether. The paper als reprts the example f cnstructin using these units. 2. Characteristics f The Brick-surfaced Cncrete Blck a. Beautiful appearance same as brick masnry b. High prductivity by mass-prductin c. High strength and lw water absrptin d. Easy and fast installatin (skilled layers are nt required) e. Suitable fr the lwer-stried buildings. 3. Prductin f The Brick-surfeced Cncrete Blck The Fig. 1. shws brick-surfaced cncrete blcks. is fine stneware brcik and its size is: 148 x 53 x 20mm The brick Six bricks are set in the mld fr a blck making the cncrete blck measuring: 298 x 148 x 200mm One f the stretcher side f the brick is shaped thinner t frm the jint line. 3 The c ncrete t fr m the blck is the special cncrete named S.E.C.(Sand Enve lped with Cement) t sequre high cmpressive and bnding strengt h. S. E. C. methd is the autmatic system t make cncrete f higher flw index and less bleeding. After equalizing the sur face misture f aggregate, first mixing is dne t cver the surface f aggregate with cement paste f small water/ cement rati. Then secnd mixing makes the cement f high fluidity. As the r esult f these newly develped methds, the bricksur faced cncrete blck wall shws the cmpressive strength f 300kg/cm r mre. As they are surfaced with bricks, the water absrptin is ver y lw (less 1.5%). 4. Example f the Husing by Brick-surfaced Cncrete Blcks Fig. 3 shws an example f husing by these brick-surfaced cncrete blcks. This husing is designed t keep privacy f each family and t keep gd scial sharing with the neighburs. As the blcks are interlcking, the cnstructin was finished ln the shrter perid than expected. Fig. 4. and Fig. 5. shw details f the brick surfaced cnrete blck walls. Because f the severe jurisdictin in Japan where the aseismic design is required, reinfrcing is necessary in the blck wall. Hwever, it may be pssible t grut the cavity f blcks withut reinfrcing in the nn-seismic area. 433
