2 Studies conducted by Germany s Federal Institute for Road Safety (BASt) have shown, that when rigid bridge barriers are impacted by heavy goods vehicles (HGV), the forces are transmitted to the bridge deck frequently causing fracturing and other structural damage. BASt H4b tested Many bridges simply are unable to take the impact forces and this leads to greater maintenance costs and a shorter working life. The solution is the controlled transmission of forces from the barrier to the bridge structure. BRIDGE GUARD is SGGT s tailor-made solution to this specific problem. The secret of the BRIDGE-GUARD system the sliding plate. It is designed to act as a mini impact absorber and considerably reduces the forces transmitted from the impacting vehicle to the bridge structure. It does this using a unique mechanism which controls and limits lateral movement. BRIDGE-GUARD steel barrier is relatively light, which also helps to minimize static strain on bridge structures. This has been confirmed through actual crash tests. BRIDGE-GUARD is especially suitable for older bridges.

3 Initial position Non-braked 400 mm Braked max. 310 mm The sliding plate is designed to increase gradually the counter force, as the barrier moves laterally. The first movement is relatively easy and softens the forces of impacting vehicles reducing passenger injuries. After an impact, the barrier can easily be put back into its original position. The second movement of the sliding plate braking mechanism is activated only, when the barrier moves laterally more than 400 mm and limits additional lateral movement to a maximum of 310 mm. In an H4b test, ( kg articulated HGV impacting at a 20º angle and travelling at 65 km/h), BRIDGE-GUARD used only 67 % of the maximum space available for lateral movement (480 mm). The handrail behind the barrier was not touched in the test crash.

4 In case of a severe impact, the relatively small lateral movement of the barrier helps to protect other bridge installations from damage, such as noise barriers or anti dazzle screens reducing possible maintenance costs. The clearance between barrier and handrail is not greatly impaired and ensures that rescue teams are unhindered and have a safe escape route. BRIDGE-GUARDsenso Sensors, a brand new and unique SGGT development, can report automatically any kind of impact. This guarantees extremely short reaction times of rescue services. Standard elements are designed to redirect impacting vehicles weighing up to kg. Each section is mm long and mm high. Standard barrier section including the anchoring system, weigh 165 kg only Special non standard elements are available, to accommodate specific bridge lengths. Sloped end sections can be supplied for beginnings and ends of BRIDGE-GUARD. These are mm long. Alternatively, SGGT can supply transitions to other types of barriers. Where a high containment barrier is needed for an off-bridge roadway or structure, we would recommend the SUPER-RAIL system. (Used with BRIDGE-GUARD in the actual crash test)
