1 SECTION 3 TUNNEL PORTALS AND DIVE STRUCTURES 3 TUNNEL PORTALS AND DIVE STRUCTURES 3.1 Design philosophy The overall design intent for tunnel portals is to create a architectural elements that are attractive and welcoming. 2 SECTION 3 TUNNEL PORTALS AND DIVE STRUCTURES 3.2 Dive structure details The portal openings, retaining walls, lighting and safety barriers leading to the portals have been designed as a series of simple, robust and integrated elements. Signs, including directional, speed and warning signs, variable message and variable speed limit signs have also been considered and are subject to further integration with the tunnel design. The design of the transition into and out of the tunnels has been carefully assessed and considered the transition of road barriers and road furniture, signposting, lighting and tunnel linings. Tunnel portals have been designed using robust, durable materials with the integration of lighting and signage. Tunnel portals feature the following: Portal facades will be a select black composite metal cladding on structural steel frame Tunnel entry portals will all feature black VMS signage above tunnel on-ramps Tunnel dive approach structures with feature wall cladding comprising composite metal cladding coloured 'silver grey' with feature lighting rebates with LED strip lighting staggered at approximately 3.8m centres.
