4 Guy anchors shall be of the helical power driven or direct buried expansible types with a minimum diameter of 250 mm and a minimum anchor rod ultimate strength of 50 kn CONSTRUCTION General Pole Orientation Concrete and metal poles shall be installed with the handhole parallel to or perpendicular to the centreline of the roadway as specified and such that the top wiring aperture is at right angles to the centreline of the road being served Pole Handling Poles shall be handled using suitable nonabrasive slings at the pole pick up points specified by the pole manufacturer Frangible Base Orientation Frangible bases shall be installed such that the handhole of the frangible base is on the same face as the pole handhole Removals and Restoration Work Removals and restoration work required shall conform to OPSS Assembly of Sectional Steel Poles Sectional steel poles shall be assembled in order of section number, taper and diameter. Sections with wiring apertures shall be set with consideration given to the handhole location. All sections shall be assembled by compression to the manufacturer's instructions such that each section meets the normal overlap limits marked on the pole or to refusal. Seam welds shall be slightly offset during assembly. The finished length of the pole shall less than or equal to the nominal pole length. For poles of 5.64 m or more in assembled length, three self tapping screws or impact inserted pins shall be put in the overlap of all sections below the signal bracket so that they are spaced equally around the pole Direct Buried Poles Installation in Earth Excavation shall be done by auguring or other suitable means to obtain a hole large enough to accommodate concrete encasement and backfill. Where the excavation extends beyond the neat limits specified, and where concrete encasement is specified, concrete may be placed to the undisturbed earth or the encasement may be formed with the remainder of the backfill made up of native material. Backfill shall be native material placed and compacted in conformance to OPSS 501. Page 4 Rev. Date: 09/1993 OPSS 615

5 Installation in Rock Where bedrock is encountered, the method of installation shall be chosen from those specified in the contract and based on the depth of rock below finished grade. Each method of installation in rock shall be approved by the Contract Administrator prior to construction. Rock anchors, bolts for rock mounts and steel dowel bars shall be installed in drilled holes and grouted in place with non-shrink grout. Poles shall be cut off at the butt end to provide the correct top of pole elevation. Wood poles which have been cut off shall have the ends treated with preservative. Concrete levelling pads, concrete backfill up to the top of the rock grade and formed concrete encasement shall be installed in conformance to OPSS 904. Native or imported earth material shall be used as backfill above or around the concrete encasement. Backfill compaction shall conform to OPSS 501. Rock excavation shall conform to OPSS Pole Alignment Direct buried poles shall be held in plumb alignment by use of a suitable temporary support assembly during concrete setting time or during backfill operations with native material Base Mounted Poles Preparation Anchorage templates shall be removed prior to installation of poles and frangible bases. All studs, bolts and nuts shall be cleaned and coated with white lithium based grease Installation of Frangible Bases Frangible bases shall be installed over the anchorage studs to rest on the levelling nuts. Levelling nuts shall be adjusted to retain the frangible base in a level position. Triangular steel washers shall be installed as specified. Anchorage nuts shall be tightened to a snug condition Pole Erection Poles shall be secured to the anchorage assembly for frangible base by setting all nuts to an initial torque of 75 Nm. Poles shall then be set in plumb alignment by adjustment of combinations of levelling nuts and holding nuts. Final tightening of nuts shall be one-half turn past the initial setting or to a minimum torque of 150 Nm Apertures Drilled apertures shall be accurately aligned to suit pole attachments or equipment. Apertures in metal poles shall be deburred. Apertures in galvanized steel poles shall be coated with grey zinc rich paint and allowed to dry. Page 5 Rev. Date: 09/1993 OPSS 615

6 Wiring apertures in metal poles shall be provided with rubber grommets. Unused pole apertures shall be plugged with rubber, neoprene or plastic plugs Guy Anchors Guy anchors consisting of an anchorage plate, galvanized steel rod, cable thimble, guy cables, preformed guy grips, strain relief insulators, three bolt clamps, guy guard, sidewalk strut, pole attachment hardware and fittings shall be installed to the full depth specified. Anchorage plates shall be installed at the specified guy lead distance, adjusted to remain clear of any existing guy anchors or by 600 mm minimum distance. Native backfill shall be placed and compacted in conformance to OPSS 501. Guy anchors shall be installed with single or double guy cable sets as specified. All guy cables shall be installed to a snug condition prior to aerial cable stringing and shall be readjusted upon completion to maintain poles in a plumb position. Guy cables shall be tightened to maintain pole alignment and aerial cable clearances Guy Spans Guy spans consisting of guy cables, pre-formed guy grips, strain relief insulators, three bolt clamps and pole attachment hardware and fittings shall be installed at the clearance height specified in the contract. Strain relief insulators shall be installed only at utility poles or at poles where low voltage or high voltage aerial cables are to be installed or exist at a higher elevation. One end of the guy span shall be connected with a three bolt clamp to allow for future cable tightening. Guy spans shall be tightened to maintain pole alignment and aerial cable clearances Removals and Restoration Work Removals and restoration work shall conform to OPSS MEASUREMENT FOR PAYMENT Individual Item Method Actual Measurement Where the contract includes tender items using the Individual Item Method, measurement will be made of each pole, frangible base, guy anchor and guy span Plan Quantity Measurement Measurement will be by Plan Quantity as may be revised by Adjusted Plan Quantity, when designated in the Contract. Such measurement will be based on the units indicated in the clauses under , Actual Measurement Rock Excavation Measurement for payment for rock excavation will be made in conformance to OPSS 603. Measurement will not be made of holes drilled in rock for the placement of steel dowel bars. Page 6 Rev. Date: 09/1993 OPSS 615
