Prelaq Nova PLX Long Strip Roofing & Cladding & Struga Metal Gutter System

1:1 Picture 1:1 shows a skyscape of old town Stockholm where all the roofs are PLX. PLX Long-Strip Metal Roofing PLX has a long history of use as a long-strip roofing material in Scandinavia and at present in excess of 22 million M 2 of the material is installed on an annual basis. PLX has a long and well proven track record as a roof and wall covering and with new coating technologies developed at SSAB Swedish Steel it can now offer the widest choice of colours whilst offering enhanced design and installation flexibility. PLX is a mild steel substrate with a yield strength of 180kn/mm 2 which allows it to perform similarly to traditionally used long-strip alternatives. It has a 350g/m 2 hot dipped galvanised coating and then has 50 microns of coating applied to the exterior and 10 microns to the interior. This level of galvanising allows the material to be soldered with regular soldering products already available in any good workshop. 1

PLX - The Material As an environmentally aware company SSAB developed Prelaq Nova and the result is a coating without equal. Prelaq Nova is a coating that provides excellent colourfastness, durability and flexibility and will offer years of hassle free service life. Prelaq Nova PLX is a durable coated metal product ideally suited to traditional detailing methods. It offers all the characteristics and workability that traditional metals offer but also offers additional design flexibility due to its coatings. The illustration 1:2 shows the build up from the mild steel core and it is this coating process that offers the durability required for roofing and facades. 1. Plastic Film 2. Top Coat of Paint 3. Primer 4. Pretreatment 5. Z350 Zinc Coat 6. Mild Steel Sheet :2 The Nova coating was developed by SSAB as an alternative to traditional plastisols. The coating is an environmentally friendly coating that will not contaminate any water run off or have any effects on the water system. In fact at the end of its service life when the roof needs to be recoated any of the coatings that chip away break down to H 2 O. Please see Colour Chart on page 12 for available colours. 2

PLX - The Material The steel core has a yield strength on 180kn/mm 2 which makes it a softer grade of steel but still retains all the properties of steel. The steel core is then coated with 350g/m 2 of galvanise which means PLX can be soldered and detailed as any other metal can be. PLX can even be soldered* to zinc so existing fixtures and accessories can be used including vents, pipes and expansion joints. Prelaq Nova PLX offers several advantages for the designer and installer of a traditional longstrip metal roof. With half the expansion and contraction of copper, zinc or aluminium PLX can be laid as standing seam roof strips of up to 30m**. 1:3 1:4 This also has the added advantage of reducing the oil canning effect normally associated with metal roofs and facades. Prelaq Nova PLX is equally effective as a façade, roof covering and, with new coatings such as Prelaq Clean this material offers a real advantage for building maintenance and improved visual impact from its self cleaning surface. *Please see our soldering section **Please consult with Newell Roofing Products for maximum strip lengths or refer to drawing 1.4 for details Picture 1:3 This barrel vaulted roof shows how malleable Prelaq Nova PLX is when detailing curved roofs. 5 Detailing At Newell Roofing we supply a full detailing and technical support service. All types of roof build ups and support systems can be catered for. PLX when installed as traditional standing seam must always be fully supported. Warm and cold roofs can be catered for and no major detailing is required for non-ventilated roofs due to the 10 micron coating to the reverse of the sheet. PLX can also be formed and installed as interlocking panels for façade and soffit applications. Cladding panels are available in a variety of widths and gauges* and a full detailing service on a project for project basis is available. Standard details are available on request in PDF or DWG format. *PLX is available in 0.6mm as standard. Thicker materials for facades are regular steel substrate and do not offer the same level of workability as PLX but offer greater panel widths where necessary. Illustration 1:5 shows an example of the drawings available from Newell Roofing Products 1:5 Installation & Profiling PLX can be installed in panel lengths of up to 25m and in some instances can stretch to 30m and is available in a standard coil width of 665mm giving a panel width of 600mm centre to centre. PLX can be profiled on standard roll-forming equipment and can be rolled and curved as required to any radius greater than 0.6m. The material will curve naturally on a radius of 10m or greater. For smaller radii mechanical curving is required. *Please see tables listing all standard coil widths 1:6 Picture 1:6 shows a long strip roof with PLX 4

Installation & Profiling 1:7 Expansion and contraction are catered for with standard sliding clips and on warm roofs special fixings can be supplied to minimise cold bridging. Panels can be laid on a roof pitch as low as 4 degrees but some seam sealant* may be required at pitches this low. Care to install a seam sealant should also be taken when installing Prelaq Nova PLX in areas where regular and heavy snowfall is an issue. *Cold roof and warm roof installation brochures are available upon request. 1:8 PLX is equally at home on warm or cold roof build-ups and can be laid directly on to a standard mineral felt on a ply wood or insulation support. When installing as a cold roof a minimum of 18mm plywood or 23mm natural board is required. In a warm roof all insulation types can be used. An all in one plywood and insulation is also available with any thickness plywood or insulation available. Care should always be taken to ensure that an adequate vapour control layer is installed in accordance with manufacturers installation instructions. 7 Installation & Profiling Prelaq Nova PLX can also be supplied as a sinusoidal panel and can be curved to a radius of minimum 0.5m. These sinusoidal panels can also be produced in lengths up to 9m. Prelaq Nova PLX can also be used to line gutters and can run as long as 12m without the need to cater for expansion. When installing longer lengths expansion can be catered for with standard zinc expansion joints as these zinc elements will solder to PLX without any issue. PLX coils will generally be supplied with a scratch film which is there to protect the coating during forming and installation. This film should be removed within 1 week after installation as failing to do so may lead to time consuming and costly removal at any date beyond this point. *Please see tables listing all standard coil widths **Details on the use of seam sealants can be provided. ***A bituminous vapour control layer would be preferable as healing around fixings is catered for in such Vapour Control Layers 1:10 Illustration 1:10 shows profiling of a PLX roof 1:11 Soldering Prelaq Nova PLX is a zinc coated metal and soldering can be carried out quite easily and with standard issue flux used for soldering zinc as well as standard 50/50 tin/lead solder. The outer and inner coatings should be removed with a paint stripper as removal by mechanical means in some instances may lead to removal of the zinc layer and cause long term damage or issues to the integrity of the soldered joint. Touch up paint is also available in all colours to provide a long lasting and secure soldered joint. Material: Paint remover, Prelaq touch up paint, cleaning detergent, water, scotch brite sponge, 3m standing sponge. Picture 1:11 shows a cleaning kit for soldering 6

Soldering Stage 1: Removal of the paint. Before soldering, the paint must be removed from each side of the areas to be joined Stage 2: Soldering Use a paint brush to cover the cleaned surfaces that should be jointed with the flux. The flux should be zinc compatible and makes the solder flow out. Stage 3: Cleaning and Painting Before painting, the surface should be cleaned with water and a mild wash detergent. When the surface is dry, paint the unpainted parts with a brush using Prelaq Touch-up Paint. 7
