2 Introduction Design Considerations The Probem When constructing a roof in new buid situations or repacing a roof in existing buidings there may be a requirement for both ow U vaues / high R vaues and the thinnest possibe roof buid up. For new buid appications, there are increasing reguatory requirements and economic reasons to improve energy efficiency. One of the approaches is to improve the therma performance of the buiding enveope whist keeping the overa construction as thin as possibe. There are aready high performance insuation products avaiabe that wi fufi the majority of these requirements, however in certain areas, for exampe where the design demands it, a new, thinner, product is needed. In refurbishment there is arguaby a greater need to keep roof buid ups as thin as possibe. In certain appications interna space may be at a premium or there may be itte space for instaing new roof insuation, for exampe in buidings with panning height restrictions. The Soution Roofing System has been deveoped to hep sove these probems. Roofing System is an optimum performance next generation insuation soution from Insuation. It comprises rigid vacuum insuation panes with a microporous core which is evacuated, encased and seaed in a thin, gas-tight enveope, giving outstanding therma conductivity, with the thinnest possibe soution to insuation probems. The vacuum insuation panes are accompanied by rigid extruded poystyrene insuation infi panes which can be cut to fit around probem areas such as roof ights or ventiator kerbs. In retrofit appications, the Roofing System provides soutions for areas that previousy coud have remained un-insuated because of insufficient space avaiabe. Design Service Roofing System comprises three eements: panes, infi strips and overay. It comes with a supporting design service which ensures the ratio of the panes to infi strips for each project is maximized. The pane ayout wi be designed quicky and effectivey, ready for cient approva. Each ayout wi iustrate the size, number and ocation of the panes. It wi aso iustrate the size, number and ocation of any infi strips required. For more detais pease contact the Insuation Technica Service Department (see rear cover). Typica Roofing Designs for the Roofing System Figure 1 infi strips In new constructions the Roofing System can significanty enhance U-vaues in areas that woud otherwise be accepted as diminishing the overa therma performance. The high eve of therma efficiency with minima thickness, achieved by the Roofing System provides soutions for appications where a ack of construction depth or space is an issue. 2

3 Specification Cause eement of the Roofing System shoud be described in specifications as:- The roof insuation sha be the Roofing System mm thick: comprising a rigid vacuum insuation pane with a microporous core which is evacuated, encased and seaed in a thin, gas-tight enveope. The product sha be manufactured under a management system certified to ISO 9001: 2008, ISO 14001: 2008, BS OHSAS 18001: 2007, and ISO 50001: 2011 and instaed in accordance with the instructions issued by Insuation Limited. Figure 2: Responsibe Sourcing Roofing System is manufactured under a management system certified to ISO 14001: Sustainabiity & Responsibiity Insuation has a ong-term commitment to sustainabiity and responsibiity: as a manufacturer and suppier of insuation products; as an empoyer; as a substantia andhoder; and as a key member of its neighbouring communities. A report covering the sustainabiity and responsibiity of Insuation Ltd s British operations is avaiabe at Protected Membrane Roofs This iterature describes the use of the Roofing System as a component of protected membrane roofing systems using either a grave or paving sab finish, and as a component of green roof systems. Protected membrane roofing systems pace the insuation above the waterproofing, and offer severa advantages over traditiona warm fat roofs. The waterproofing system can be expected to have a ife in excess of that obtained in an exposed situation, as it is protected from mechanica damage, UV degradation from soar radiation and temperature extremes (both daiy and seasona). The roof is safe from condensation risk. Insuation can be ifted to aow inspection of the waterproofing system. Additiona insuation can be added at a ater date. The instaation of the insuation is not weather dependent. wind upift warranty is avaiabe. 3

5 Sitework Green Roofs Benefits Green roofs, are an aternative to the standard protected membrane roof that offer many advantages but require precise design and detaiing. Specificay they can: reduce urban isand heat effect; provide a habitat for widife; create usabe areas for recreationa activities; retain rainfa thus prevent water surges into the drainage system; improve sound insuation; and provide a visuay more attractive finish than protected membrane roofs with grave or paving sab baast. Types of Green Roof Green roof systems can be divided into three main categories. Extensive green roofs comprise a reativey shaow growing medium and ow maintenance vegetation such as grass. They are ightweight, simpe to design, construct and maintain, but shoud not be considered suitabe for reguar traffic or recreationa activities. Extensive systems are especiay usefu in creating green areas for both ecoogica and aesthetic reasons. Semi-intensive green roofs comprise a deeper growing medium and vegetation such as grass, perennias and shrubs. They are designed to be more garden ike and to accommodate imited access for maintenance and recreation. Intensive green roofs have a much deeper growing medium and a wider variety of fora, incuding grass, shrubs and smaer trees. They are comparabe with norma gardens in respect of maintenance, and can be used for recreation activities. The sef weight of the system can be very high, due to the increased soi depth. Carefu design and detaiing of both roof types is important and incudes the foowing eements. Drainage Layer The drainage ayer normay consists of either: a ayer of washed grave 8/16; expanded cay; or a speciaist egg carton or casteated pastic (HDPE) sheeting; a overaid with a fitration membrane. The drainage ayer aows the rapid remova of excess rainwater from the roof, thus avoiding saturation of the soi and the associated increase in weight. Moisture Retention Layer The imited depth of soi, especiay in the extensive type of roof, may require the use of a moisture retention ayer to ensure sufficient water is avaiabe for the vegetation. Root Barrier The roots of growing pants can seriousy damage waterproof membranes, by growing into any sma cracks, ap joints or other discontinuities. A root barrier may be formed by a separate cap sheet of poythene, or bitumen fet. The cap sheet is either adhered or oose aid onto the waterproof membrane, with a joints seaed by bonding or weding, and must be continued up vertica faces of upstands. Waterproofing Prior to instaing the Roofing System, it is essentia to ensure that the waterproofing system has been instaed correcty and that the roof is watertight and cean. The surface of the waterproofing shoud be smooth, fat and free from projections. Singe-py membranes, in particuar, need carefu attention to ensure that there has been no damage from foowing trades, and that puncturing from beow the membrane (from nai heads or debris) cannot occur. If a singe-py membrane or mastic asphat waterproofing system has been instaed, a non-woven poyester feece separation ayer shoud be aid on top of the membrane prior to the instaation of the insuation. Growing Medium In its simpest form this is norma soi. Speciaist mixtures are avaiabe, incorporating expanded cay and ava rock, which form the growing medium and have fitration, drainage and moisture retention functions. 5

6 Sitework Insuation Boards An optiona protection ayer may be used under the Roofing System. For further information pease contact the Insuation Technica Service Department (see rear cover). panes shoud be aid break bonded where practica, with joints ighty butted. There shoud be no gaps at abutments. Where runs of the pane do not accuratey fit the dimension of the roof, the use of infi strips is required to make up this difference. Each infi strip is to be the same thickness as the panes. overay shoud be aid as soon as possibe to avoid exposure of the to direct foot traffic. At the perimeter of the roof and where upstands or any penetrations (e.g. drainage outets) are present, infi strips shoud be aid abutting these areas, to take account of buiding toerances. A minimum distance of 12 in shoud be maintained between the top of the insuation upstand and the bottom of the horizonta roof insuation. Roofing System can be aid in any weather but care must be taken in windy conditions. Wheeed / Foot Traffic panes shoud not be directy waked on. A protective foot or craw board shoud be used during the instaation process. infi strips and the overay may be waked on. Genera Roofing System shoud not be used in association with sovent-based adhesive systems. Roofing System shoud not be exposed to open fames or excessive heat. Cutting panes shoud not be cut or penetrated. The substrate must be cean, dry and eve, and free of sharp objects or edges. Cutting of the infi strips shoud be carried out either by using a fine toothed saw, or by scoring with a sharp knife, snapping the board over a straight edge and then cutting the facing on the other side. Ensure accurate trimming of the infi to achieve cose-butting joints and continuity of insuation. Avaiabiity Pease contact Insuation for avaiabiity of the Roofing System. Packaging and Storage The packaging of the Roofing System shoud not be considered adequate for outdoor protection. Roofing System shoud be stored inside a buiding and raised off the foor.
