1 Technical Data Sheet ELASTENE 404 Binder Pure Acrylic Binder For Elastomeric Coatings Regional Product Availability EMEA Description ELASTENE 404 Binder is an aqueous acrylic polymer developed for formulating elastomeric wall coatings with an excellent balance between mechanical properties and dirt pick-up resistance. ELASTENE 404 is alkylphenol ethoxylate free*. It can be used to formulate matt to sheen elastomeric coatings while maintaining flexibility at both high and low temperatures. Characteristics APEO free* High solids Very good mechanical properties (crack bridging) Capability to formulate A 5 systems (NF EN ) Very good formulation latitude Excellent exterior durability No exudation when applied under adverse weather conditions * Manufactured without the use of APEO surfactants Typical Physical Properties (These properties are typical but do not constitute specifications.) Property Typical Values Appearance Milky white liquid Solids content % ph Brookfield LV Viscosity (spindle 3, 60 rpm) < 500 mpa.s Minimum Film Formation Temperature < 0 C Specific gravity (wet polymer) 1.05 g/cm 3 Specific gravity (dry polymer) 1.12 g/cm 3 Stabilization APEO free surfactants Page 1 of 5

2 Formulation Guidelines ELASTENE 404 Binder demonstrates wide formulation latitude from traditional elastomeric façade coatings (smooth to textured/ trowel applied) to flat masonry paints. ELASTENE 404 Binder has been mainly designed for exterior applications, but can be also used in specific interior wall and ceiling paints when some crack bridging performance is required. The pure acrylic backbone of ELASTENE 404 Binder ensures that the gloss retention, tint retention, dirt pick-up resistance and alkali resistance will be equivalent to the high standard associated with this type of product. In addition, the proprietary adhesion technology incorporated in this emulsion combined with its inherent elasticity will provide a high degree of crack resistance and adhesion to various masonry substrates Below are some guidelines to help formulators: Dispersants Best overall performance has been achieved using an hydrophobic dispersing agent like OROTAN 731A ER Dispersant in formulations based on ELASTENE 404 Binder. Defoamers We found good defoaming properties with DOWSIL 111F Defoamer added in the grind and with DOWSIL 8590 Additive in the letdown. Rheology modifiers and thickeners Combination of alkali soluble emulsion like ACRYSOL ASE-60 ER Rheology Modifier and associative HEUR like ACRYSOL RM-825 or ACRYSOL RM-8WE is recommended for formulating ELASTENE 404 Binder. Textured coatings based on ELASTENE 404 Binder can be formulated with conventional HASE rheology modifiers such as ACRYSOL TT-615. The level of associative thickener needs to be selected carefully, as high levels may lead to poor early tack resistance. In very high shear conditions, formulations based on ELASTENE 404 Binder may need to be adjusted in ph and/or optimized with addition of non-ionic surfactants like TERGITOL 15S40 Surfactant. Coalescents and co-solvents Formulations based on ELASTENE 404 Binder do not require the use of coalescent for film formation. However a water immiscible coalescent like UCAR Filmer IBT can be used to ensure higher film cohesion during drying. The use of co-solvent like propylene glycol is recommended to improve application properties. Extenders Standard extenders recommended for smooth or textured exterior masonry coatings such as various grades of calcium carbonates, can be used in formulations based on ELASTENE 404 Binder. Biocides Although standard in-can preservatives could be used in paint formulations, it is always recommended to test them for compatibility and efficacy. ROCIMA MB2X Preservative could be chosen as in-can preservative. A film preservative like BIOBAN 350 Polymer Shield Technology is recommended in these exterior wall coatings. Page 2 of 5
