Smarter, lighter, faster the offsite revolution with Light Gauge Steel Framing

Sigmat have had continued growth in my time here and have the statistics to show that we are market leaders in terms of turnover & market share The Construction Industry is showing a remarkable shift & appetite for offsite methods of construction & the LGSF market is expanding at a rapid rate Quite a revolution I hope you ll agree?

My aim for today is to demonstrate how light gauge steel frame solutions (LGSF) have delivered cost, time and energy savings through innovations in manufacturing and digital technologies. To this end, the University of Hull student accommodation project will form the basis for this.

So why did Vinci choose Sigmat for the largest ever UK LGSF project? 1. What methods of construction were considered & evaluated? LGSF, In-situ Concrete, Timber Frame & Pre-Cast Concrete

2. What was the overriding reason to choose LGSF? a) In-situ concrete could not deliver to programme b) Pre-cast was too expensive and required a greater level of detail prior to manufacture c) Timber Frame was ruled out early due to the storey heights amongst other things (9 storeys is well within the Sigmat LGSF capabilities)

3. How did the programmes of each method considered compare to LGSF? a) Pre-cast Concrete similar programme but more expensive b) In-situ Concrete couldn t hit programme

4. Apart from programme & cost, what else was key to the Sigmat LGSF submission? The ability to offer a scaffold less build by utilising our bespoke Edge Protection System

4. Did utilising a lighter frame offer savings in the ground? If so, can you offer an approximate percentage against each method considered? Not sure what the percentage would be, too much of an open question. But it does obviously offer savings in the ground due to lighter frame weight.

Sigmat weight per m2 / dead load appraisal We have done some quick calculations & based on a Sigmat frame with concrete floors, we are roughly: 6.6% lighter than a traditional steel frame with concrete floors and lightweight stud partition walls 53% lighter than a similar concrete frame building

5. How did Vinci feel the project benefitted by utilising LGSF & did they achieve greater productivity as a result? 1) The blocks were all similar so detailing was consistent 2) The aim was to develop the first block ASAP (which we achieved) 3) The system avoided the use of scaffolding which was key 4) Mast climbers were predominantly being used for the external treatment

To this point, hopefully I ve demonstrated how light gauge steel frame solutions (LGSF) can deliver cost, time and energy savings by showcasing the University of Hull student accommodation project. So what about innovations in manufacturing and digital technologies?
