2 Insulation for Ventilated Rainscreen Systems Four Steps to Compliance This Technical Bulletin details the route to compliance with Approved Document B2 to the Building Regulations for insulated rainscreen cladding systems fixed to new and existing steel framed or masonry walls. The requirements differ for constructions used in buildings: less than 18 metres in height; and 18 metres or more in height. Referring to Approved Document B2 - Buildings other than dwellinghouses (2006 edition), amended 2007, the reader is directed as follows for guidance given in relation to the application of insulation materials: Figure 1 Buildings less than 18 metres in height with a non-combustible substrate Step 1 Please refer to Section 9 Table 13 - Maximum Dimensions of cavities in non-domestic buildings (Purpose Group 2-7) (Figure 1). Step 2 Please refer to Section 9 paragraph 9.3 Junctions and cavity closures (Figure 2). Figure 2 For buldings less than 18 metres in height, as Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board is classified by the Building Regulations as being Class 0, it complies with the requirements of Approved Document B2 if the maximum dimensions in any direction between cavity barriers is 20 metres. In addition, cavity barriers should be provided to close the edge of cavities, including those around all openings. Cavity barriers also need to be provided at the junction with an internal wall or floor which is forming a fire resisting barrier. N.B. Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board should not be installed directly to steel framing. 2

3 Buildings 18 metres or more in height The following relates only to storeys at a height of 18 metres or greater. Step 3 In addition to Steps 1 and 2, due to the nature of the construction, please refer to Section 12 paragraph 12.5 External wall construction (Figure 3). Step 4 Refer to the guidance given in BR 135 for a building with a storey 18 metres or more above ground level (Figure 4). Figure 3 Figure 4 For buldings of 18 metres or more in height, as Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board meets the BR 135 performance criteria when tested to BS : 2002 with horizontal cavity barriers at a 3.5 metre vertical separation, Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board complies with the requirements of Approved Document B2 if installed on the outside of a non-combustible substrate i.e. calcium silicate board or masonry and the maximum vertical distance between cavity barriers is 3.5 metres. In the event the floor spacing is less than 3.5 metres cavity barriers should be provided at every floor level. 3

4 Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board is the first insulation board to achieve LABC Type Approval as a thermal insulation layer in rainscreen cladding systems. It remains the only insulation board that holds both BBA Certification and LABC Type Approval. Certificate No LABC Type Approval is issued by one local authority and is accepted by all other local authorities throughout England and Wales. LABC Type Approvals cover compliance with the Building Regulations and a register of Approvals is kept by LABC to which local authority building control officers can refer. This LABC Type Approval thus eases the planning process for projects incorporating Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board, and applies in all situations shown on Diagram 40 of Approved Document B Volume 2, including those parts of a building more than 18m above ground (Figure 5). Kingspan Kooltherm K15 Rainscreen Board is a premium performance rigid thermoset insulation board for use in ventilated rainscreen cladding systems.
