2 ENTRY CATEGORIES 1 RESIDENTIAL ARCHITECTURAL EXCELLENCE: For the innovative use of timber, resulting in a distinctive visual impact on a residential building, either stand-alone or multi-unit/multi-storey project. 2 COMMERCIAL ARCHITECTURAL EXCELLENCE: For the innovative use of timber resulting in a distinctive visual impact on a commercial, industrial, or public building environment. 3 ENGINEERING INNOVATION: For the innovative use of timber, resulting in a distinctive technical/structural solution in a residential, commercial, industrial or public building environment. 4 EXCELLENCE IN ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCTS: For the innovative use of EWP s, resulting in a distinctive impact of the EWP properties and aesthetics on a residential, commercial, industrial or public building environment. 5 MULTI-STOREY TIMBER BUILDINGS (NEW): At least 3 floors where the predominant structural material is wood or a wood-based product. These floors may be built upon one or more floors of new or pre-existing buildings constructed from other materials. 6 INTERIOR INNOVATION: For innovative use of wood or a wood panel product as a signature feature, in a predominantly wood building, adding ambience, flair and practicality. 7 EXTERIOR INNOVATION & INFRASTRUCTURE: For any wood or wood panel product that forms the exterior of a structure, be it residential or non-residential which highlights the versatility and flexibility of wood while enhancing the buildings aesthetic. 8 NZ SPECIALITY TIMBER AWARD: The use of specialty timber in a manner that best highlights its unique characteristics. This category is open to entries from across the spectrum of NZ grown timber usage from furniture to buildings, facilities to objets d art. 9 WOOD & FIBRE CREATIVITY AWARD (REVISED): Original and innovative uses of wood fibre (solid wood, manufactured products) in unusual or unexpected applications which make great use of the fibre properties, e.g. tiny house design gems, chemical or process innovations. 10 INNOVATION OF STUDENT DESIGN AWARD: (Open to all universities) The best three designs selected from each University will be chosen from submitted work presented in their courses. The two finalist students will receive all expenses paid to make short presentations at the Gala Dinner Awards in Auckland. 3 WELCOME TO THE 2018 NZ WOOD TIMBER DESIGN AWARDS ENTRY INFORMATION Please ensure you have read and understood the conditions below before submitting your entry into the 2018 NZ Wood Timber Design Awards. ENTRY Entry is open to NZ resident architects, builders, architectural designers, engineers, students and other designers who have used NZ originated timber that has been manufactured in NZ. Only one entry per project, joint entries between disciplines or firms are welcome. A submitted project must be based on a completed building or structure. Building or project must have been completed between 1 March 2016 to 28 February Building or project must have significant timber content, either structural or decorative. Projects may include the effective use of timber in combination with other materials. Building or project owner s consent for publicity must be acknowledged on the entry form. Anonymity of the owner s name will be assured if requested in the appropriate part of the entry form. The entry form must be complete and accurate you should retain a completed copy for your records. You will receive an confirming your entry once it has been processed. Projects entered in previous years must not be entered again. An entry fee of $ per category entry is payable using the online PayPal method. A submission may be entered in a maximum of two of the following eight categories: PRIZES There will be a cash prize of $2000 awarded for the winner of each category. The Innovation of Student Design Award will receive $1000 each and all expenses paid to attend the Gala Awards. 3

4 PROCESS First Stage Entries for all categories close 5pm, Monday 30 April 2018 First stage of entry requires between 4 and 6 high resolution photographs and a project description of between 150 and 250 words. (In the case of an unbuilt project high resolution images will not be required, but plans and artists impressions/ drawings are essential). The project description must cover the judging criteria for the relevant categories.. The initial judging will be done via a series of electronic files, which will be electronically sent to each judge by drop box. The first stage entries will be judged and a short list developed against each category. The short list will be announced and up to 5 shortlisted entrants will be invited to submit second stage entries relevant to their category for detailed final judging. An entry fee of $115 per category entry is payable using the online PayPal method. Week Commencing 21 May 2018, Timber Design Awards shortlisted category finalists will be announced and will be invited to enter the Second Stage Second Stage Entries will close at 5pm, Friday 20 July 2018 Second stage entries will require 2-3 A2 presentation boards (5mm foam core) with mounted images. Written design statements ( words) can be included as paper copies. NZ Wood reserves the right to sub-divide categories in the event of a large number of high quality entries. Yes No PUBLIC RELATIONS/PROMOTION Permission from owners and photographers is the responsibility of the entrant and must be obtained before entering. NZ Wood will publish all entries on the NZ Wood website and may use photographs and details in subsequent web articles and advertising. As an added benefit for attending this years awards, NZ Wood has joined NZIA this year and 10 CPD points will be given to all that attend the Presentation Event. 4

Judging Criteria: Solution to complexity; Engineering design; Innovation; Aesthetics; Environmental sustainability. 4 EXCELLENCE IN ENGINEERED WOOD PRODUCTS: For the innovative use of EWP s, resulting in a distinctive impact of the EWP properties and/or aesthetics on a residential, commercial, industrial or public building environment. Judging Criteria: Material selection; Solution to complexity; Innovation; Engineering Design; Aesthetics; Environmental sustainability 5 MULTI-STOREY TIMBER BUILDINGS (NEW): At least 3 floors where the predominant structural material is wood or a wood-based product. These floors may be built upon one or more floors of new or pre-existing buildings constructed from other materials. Judging Criteria: Because this is a new award we are not defining further aspects of the award, but will leave it to the expert judges to decide the relative merits of extra height, gravity load and lateral load resisting systems and innovative construction systems. 6 INTERIOR INNOVATION: For innovative use of wood or a wood panel product as a signature feature, in a predominantly wood building, adding ambience, flair and practicality. Judging Criteria: Material selection; Context, Built Form and Amenity; Innovation; Aesthetics; Architecture (interior); Environmental sustainability. 7 EXTERIOR INNOVATION & INFRASTRUCTURE: For any wood or wood panel product that forms the exterior of or is an exterior structure, be it residential or non-residential which highlights the versatility and flexibility of wood while enhancing the structure s aesthetic. Judging Criteria: Material selection; Context, Built Form and Amenity; Innovation; Aesthetics; Environmental sustainability. 8 NZ SPECIALITY TIMBER AWARD: The use of specialty timber in a manner that best highlights its unique characteristics. This category is open to entries from across the spectrum of NZ grown timber usage from furniture to buildings, facilities to objet s d art. Judging Criteria: Material selection; Innovation; Aesthetics; Environmental sustainability. 9 WOOD & FIBRE CREATIVITY AWARD (REVISED): Original and innovative uses of wood fibre (solid wood, manufactured products) in unusual or unexpected applications which make great use of the fibre properties, e.g. tiny house design gems, chemical or process innovations. Judging Criteria: Off the wall ideas rather than off the shelf, e.g. tiny house gems, products with particular strengths and uses. The world is your pine cone. 10 INNOVATION OF STUDENT DESIGN AWARDS: (Open to ALL Universities) The best three designs selected from each University will be chosen from submitted work presented in their courses. The two finalist students will receive all expenses paid to make short presentations at the Gala Dinner Awards in Auckland. Judging Criteria: Three projects by third year students will be nominated by each academic program for architecture and/or engineering. The Timber Design Award Judges will select the final two winners. The winning two students will receive $1000 prize money each. 5

6 JUDGES TIM MELVILLE BArch FNZIA Registered Architect, President-Elect, New Zealand Institute of Architects Tim began his career at a small Auckland practice before venturing overseas and gaining further experience with ORMS Architects in London. On his return to New Zealand Tim was a Senior Architect with Jasmax until 1999 when he founded RTA Studio with Richard Naish. He has been a Principal at Warren and Mahoney since A specialist in design development, Tim has an in-depth knowledge of documentation methodologies and technical systems, coupled with extensive site and contract management experience. He is a strong communicator and an accomplished team leader who believes that effective collaboration is at the crux of better design outcomes. Tim s sector experience includes education, commercial, community, mixed use and multi-unit residential. Tim has been an assessor for the New Zealand Registered Architects Board for over ten years, has served two terms as Auckland Councillor on the New Zealand Institute of Architects National Council, and will assume the role of NZIA President in DAVID CARRADINE Ph. D. Structural Engineer, President-Elect, New Zealand Timber Design Society David has worked as an experimental researcher in the field of timber structures for over 15 years, testing everything from single nail connections up to full-scale building tests for the New Zealand Ministry of Education, and many things in between. He came to New Zealand in 2008 to work as a Timber Research Engineer with the Structural Timber Innovation Company (STIC) in Christchurch where he worked with the University of Canterbury team in an effort to develop post-tensioned timber buildings for multi-story applications. David has worked at BRANZ for the last 5 and a half years as a structural engineer doing research and conducting testing on a wide range of building products and systems used in conjunction with timber. ANDREA STOCCHERO Sustainable Architect, Scion, New Zealand Academic qualifications: Master of Science degree in Architecture from the Università IUAV di Venezia (Italy) Andrea is part of Scion s (New Zealand Forestry Research Institute) Built Environment team where he is researching on wood design & construction technologies, environmental benefits of using timber in future urban developments along with the social and cultural implications of using wood in the design and construction sector. Among other tasks he is advocating nationally and internationally the use of timber building technologies and engineered wood products in relation to environmental sustainability, building multi-performance, human health and well-being. Andrea is also Member of the Board of the Passive House Institute New Zealand (PHINZ) an Incorporated Charitable Trust that aims to improve public health and well-being and relieving fuel poverty through the promotion of healthy and highly energy efficient homes and public buildings. Andrea is an Italian Registered Architect specialised in building sustainability, energy efficiency and bio-based materials. In Italy he worked as a designer, construction project manager and sustainability consultant on several building projects that maximised the use of wood and other bio-based materials to achieve the highest sustainability targets. Wood & Fibre Creativity Award Judge: PAMELA BELL CEO of PreFab NZ, Pamela brings experience in architecture (MArch). In 2009, she completed a Master of Architecture thesis Kiwi Prefab: Prefabricated Housing in NZ'. Pamela co-authored a commemorative book on HIVE, in 2016, New Zealand s first Home Innovation Village facilitated by PrefabNZ in response to Canterbury s earthquakes The HIVE showcased a range of ten high-quality, sustainable, well-designed prefabricated houses in Christchurch for members of the public to experience the benefits of prefab first-hand. It is hoped that it is the first of many HIVE s in New Zealand. Pamela sits on the BRANZ Board that oversees the Building Levy for research towards better buildings. She is a member of the Ministry of Business, Innovation and Employment (MBIE) Building Advisory Panel (BAP) that provides industry input to executives and Ministers. Her involvement in governance is reflected in membership of the Institute of Directors (IoD). 6

7 First Stage Entries for all categories close 5pm, Monday 30th April 2018 ENTRY DETAILS COMPONENTS: STAGE ONE 1. Completed entry form and paid entry fee 2. Photographs For purpose of viewing by judges the photographs should illustrate use of timber throughout the project. Should include at least one photograph which strongly represents the timber subject of the project. One photograph which shows the completed project. Digital colour high resolution images sent via electronic files, which will be sent to each judge by drop box. Files must be suitable for media/print use (JPEG image: minimum of 300 dpi and no larger than 10 MB in file size). Additional plans and sections no larger than A4 size may also be included to demonstrate particular features of the building. Photographs of the frame in construction will be required in Category 3 & 4 Engineering Innovation and Excellence in Engineered Wood Products. Project Descriptions These will enable the entry to be properly appreciated by the judging panel, a short form of which may be placed on the NZ Wood website, and in the case of winning entries for post award publicity purposes. Requirements: The description must not exceed 250 words each, included in the Dropbox file as a Word document (only) including: The stage one entry description must include an explanation for how the use of timber added value to the project in terms of construction benefits, aesthetic benefits, cost benefits. Details of the timber species (as appropriate) used for various applications within the project.
