3 PAGE 3 OF 19 INTRODUCTION This specification covers insulating tapes for binding, lane marking, hazards warning, duct sealing, vapour barrier, protection, construction or insulating purposes where other good electrical insulating properties are required. 1 SCOPE This specification covers City Power s requirements for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes. The tapes have a base or backing consisting of an extensible film of polyvinyl chloride or a copolymer of polyvinyl chloride, suitably plasticized and stabilized, and coated on one side with a non-corrosive pressuresensitive adhesive that requires no heating, wetting, or other preparation to effect application. 2 NORMATIVE S The following documents contain provisions that, through reference in the text, constitute requirements of this specification. At the time of publication, the editions indicated were valid. All standards and specifications are subject to revision, and parties to agreements based on this specification are encouraged to investigate the possibility of applying the most recent editions of the documents listed below. SANS 122 Pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes. BS 3924 Pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes for electrical purposes. UL 510 Standard for Polyvinyl Chloride, Polyethylene, and Rubber Insulating Tape. 3 DEFINITIONS AND ABBIATIONS For the purpose of this specification the definitions, as per SANS 122 for pressure-sensitive adhesive tapes shall apply. 3.1 Acceptable Acceptable to the authority administering this standard, or to the parties concluding the purchase contract, as relevant. 3.2 Adhesion strength Force measured under specified conditions, required to remove the tape from a prescribed surface. 3.3 Adhesive transfer Transfer of adhesive coating from its normal position on the backing to the reverse (uncoated) side of the backing when the tape is unrolled from a roll, or the transfer of the adhesive coating from its normal position on the backing to any other surface when the tape is removed from that surface. 3.4 Defective Roll of tape, a test specimen, or a set of test specimens whose average property has been determined, that fails in one or more respects to comply with the appropriate requirements of the specification.

4 PAGE 4 OF Directional satin finish Finish obtained by so grinding the surface with fine abrasives (without subsequent polishing) as to leave a silky appearance, with all abrasion marks running in the same general direction. 3.6 Flag Length of tape that unwinds spontaneously under the conditions of the test specified in Lot That number of rolls of tape of total length not less than 400 m and not more than m, and of the same type, colour, and dimensions, from one manufacturer, submitted at any one time for inspection and testing. 3.8 Standard test conditions Temperature of 23 ± 2 C and a relative humidity of 50 ± 5 % 4 CONSTRUCTIONAL REQUIREMENTS 4.1 General The tape shall preferably comply with SANS 122, but alternatively BS 3924 or UL 510 shall also be considered. 4.2 Type The tape shall be of one of the following types, as specified by the purchaser: a) Type A: Tapes suitable for use where the working temperature does not exceed 60 C. b) Type B: Tapes suitable for use where the working temperature does not exceed 90 C. 4.3 Finish Each roll of tape shall be free from telescoping and distortion The edges of the tape shall be straight and unbroken The tape shall be smooth, uniform and free from any lumps and bare spots when unrolled. 4.4 Colour The colour of the tapes shall be: a) Red, b) Yellow, c) Blue, d) Black e) Green. 4.5 Dimensions The core shall be wound on an acceptable core having a 30mm nominal internal diameter The nominal width of the tape shall be 19 mm The tape shall have a nominal length of 20 m.

5 PAGE 5 OF The nominal thickness of the tape shall be 160 µm. 5 ELECTRICAL REQUIREMENTS 5.1 Breaking strength and elongation The tape shall have a minimum breaking strength of 2,6 N/mm of the width, having a 120% elongation of the original length for a 160 µm thickness of tape under standard test conditions. 5.2 Adhesion strength The adhesion to steel shall be at least 190 N/mm of the width of the tape under standard test conditions Adhesion to the backing shall be at least 170 N/mm of the width of the tape under standard test conditions Breakdown voltage The tape, of nominal thickness of 160 µm, shall have a minimum breakdown voltage of 7,4 kv under standard test conditions. 5.4 Insulation resistance The insulation resistance of the tape shall be at least MΩ per 25 mm width of tape under standard test conditions. Note: The insulation resistance of the tape is an indirect measurement of electrolytic corrosion caused by the tape. 5.5 Heat resistance When tested under the standard test conditions, the type B tape shall show no sign of cracking after flexing. 6 TESTS 6.1 Type test The type test shall comply with the requirements of SANS Routine test (Inspection) The routine inspection test shall comply with SANS MARKING, PACKING AND DOCUMENTATION 7.1 Marking The marking of the tapes shall comply with the requirements of SANS The core of the tape shall be clearly and indelibly marked with: a) Brand name or trade mark, and b) Catalogue number City Power s SAP number shall be clearly shown on the label. 7.2 Packing The packing shall comply with the requirements of SANS Documentation Documentation shall be submitted in a technical catalogue format.

6 PAGE 6 OF The technical catalogue shall specify the sizes, dimensions, reference numbers, and if applicable, the complete range of other products and accessories available. 8 QUALITY MANAGEMENT 8.1 The supplier (deemed to be an organization that undertakes any manufacturing or assembly operation) shall have a formally documented and implemented quality management system (QMS) that, as a minimum meets with the requirements of the international code of practice for quality systems ISO City Power reserves the right to audit quality management systems for suitability and effectiveness and to verify all goods for conformance prior to delivery. 8.2 Foreign and third party manufacturers shall, in addition, hold valid certification of their quality management system. Such certification shall be from a national quality systems certification body (Registrar), duly accredited by a QMS accreditation body, which is signatory to a mutual recognition agreement with South Africa.
