Rain Screen TECHNOLOGY FURRING

What is Rain Screen Technology? This modern innovation is quickly becoming the preferred method for preventing rainwater from entering exterior walls. Rain screen technology is already promoted heavily as a Best Practice Solution by industry experts and in recent studies commissioned by Federal agencies such as HUD and the U.S. Department of Energy. Rain screens work hard to keep moisture at bay, with technology that sheds most of the rain and manages the rest. Because any wind-driven moisture drains away, condensation no longer forms behind the siding. It s simple: by keeping exterior walls and insulation dry, moisture cannot invade and cause premature decay. Superior Design Components The hollow-back construction pioneered by Furring- Master provides a gap that s central to this system. Besides ensuring maximum drainage, this design allows proper venting so moisture dries faster than ever. Furring-Master won t trap moisture or become brittle with age. Without question they are superior to wooden furring strips or plastic battens. Furring-Master is guaranteed for 50 years. Screened trim adapters keep the air moving. The vent facilitates maximum air intake and exhaust, and its screen component reduces insect infiltration. Exclusive Features: Patent Pending hollow-back construction facilitates maximum drainage and accelerates drying. Strong A.S.T.M. 20/22 gauge G-90 galvanized U-Bar steel furring strips straighten imperfect walls. Furring-Master 1 / 4 " creates a perfect sized gap which does not add to the cost of building out window and door openings. Furring-Master 3 / 8 " is approved by Canadian building code. Will not crack, split, burn, rot, or trap moisture, unlike wood furring strips. Will not crush and cause a wavy appearance, unlike more expensive mesh rain screens. Recommended by James Hardie Siding, a national leader in innovative fiber cement siding solutions. Offers a true capillary break. 50 year service life guarantee. Screen Trim Adapter lets air in and out of the gap, yet deters insect infiltration. The furring strips help straighten walls, and are sized perfectly so they do not add to the cost of building out openings, such as windows.

Benefits of a Vented Rain Screen 1 2 Equalized pressure means less air infiltration into the building. An intentional gap between the exterior sheathing and cladding hosts a mid-layer of air around the building. By allowing the building s outermost air pressure to equalize with the exterior atmosphere, this transitional layer eliminates the large pressure difference between a building s interior and exterior, which is otherwise common. Since external air can no longer enter the building when it hits the cladding, the walls are as air tight and as energy efficient as possible. Screen Trim Adapter Furring-Master House Wrap Wood or Fiber Cement Siding Any water that makes it past the cladding will drain and dry quickly. No cladding assembly is entirely impervious to the elements, but with the vented rain screen, any water that may enter will swiftly drain down the Water Resistive Barrier and out the bottom. Any remaining dampness will dry quickly thanks to the air gap behind the cladding. These superior drainage and drying essentials keep moisture from infiltrating the wall s assembly and prolong the life of the building, no matter the type of cladding used. 3An extra layer of air keeps the building cooler. In most exterior walls the sun hits the cladding, which is in direct contact with the sheathing. The result: the sun s heat travels an easy path directly from the cladding into the walls, heating the building. With Rain Screen Technology, the transitional mid-layer of air impedes the transference of heat; keeping the wall s sheathing, and therefore the building, much cooler. The Furring-Master strips create a gap between the building wrap and siding. Screen trim adapters on top and bottom facilitate maximum airflow and deter insect infiltration. The Screen Trim Adapter facilitates both intake and exhaust airflow through the gap created by the furring strips. The screening deters most insects.

What options are available? Furring-Master strips come in four different styles, so there is always a perfect choice for any application or location. Strips are available to create 1 / 4 " or 3 / 8 " rain screens, so the perfect strips can be chosen based on building codes and the thickness best suited for the building application. Strips are available in 20 or 22 gauge A.S.T.M G-90 galvanized steel. The gauge used should match the installation method and substrate. Which option should be used? 20 gauge 22 gauge 1/ 4 " (better) 3/ 8 " (best) thick foam on the walls, when 1/4" rain screen is better than none, but 3/8" would cause too much window and door build out. Use as the structural member to support the weight of the siding. Screw into the wall studs, then nail the siding to the strip with approved nailers. minimal or no foam on the walls, when 1/4 rain screen is better than none, but 3/8 would cause too much window and door build out. Nail through strips with siding nailers to mount Furring- Master then nail siding per manufacturer recommendations. thick foam on the walls, where a larger gap is needed to follow building code (such as in Canada). Recommended by most fiber cement siding manufacturers. Use as the structural member to support the weight of the siding. It allows intake and exhaust airflow through the gap of the rain screen, allowing moisture to escape. The screening deters most insects to reduce infiltration. 1/4" 3/8" 1" 5/8" 2-10/16"

The steel furring strips create a transitional gap between the exterior of the building and the siding. Siding made of wood or fiber cement can be applied over the furring strips.
