1 15ECS-MI-01WA / TCN Page 1 of 10 1 General 1.1 DESCRIPTION.1 This section specifies the requirements for tennis court construction including the supply and installation of additional compacted sub-base aggregate, concrete brick curbing, asphalt penetration surface and court colour coat application. 1.2 REFERENCED STANDARDS.1 Material Specifications for Aggregates - Miscellaneous OPSS Material Specifications for Aggregates - OPSS Material Specifications for Emulsified Asphalt - OPSS Any additional standards referenced in the above documents shall also apply to the work..5 Where no requirements can be found in the above standards, the additional applicable requirements of this Section shall apply. 1.3 RELATED SECTIONS.1 Section 02319: Excavation, Backfilling and Grading.2 Section 02770: Concrete Sidewalk and Curb.3 Section 02723: Granular Subbase.4 Section 02770: Concrete Sidewalk and Curb.5 Section 02821: Fencing and Gates 1.4 SUBMITTALS.1 Submit court surface manufacturer's product data, catalog cuts, application specifications, maintenance information, and office samples in accordance with Section Contractor to submit a list of the following items to the Consultant for approval stating the item s condition and that they have been removed and stored by the contractor:.1 Tennis nets and anchors.2 Net posts.3 Net Post Sleeve Extensions

2 15ECS-MI-01WA / TCN Page 2 of 10.4 Wind screens.5 Court divider net and cable.6 Fencing and gates.3 All of the above items are to be reinstated by the Contractor. 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE.1 The installer of the court surfacing shall be certified by the approved manufacturer, and shall use only workmen who are trained and experienced in the installation of the court surface..2 Do not store resurfaces or colour system materials in direct sunlight. During cold weather, store materials in a manner to prevent freezing. All materials shall be kept sealed in original containers until ready for use..3 The installer of the tennis court must be a tennis court contractor recognized by the Ontario Tennis Associated and a member in good standing with The American Sports Builders Associated as a certified tennis court builder. Tennis court contractor shall have a minimum of ten (10) years experience. 1.6 JOB CONDITIONS.1 All work in this section shall be undertaken in suitable weather conditions. Organize and carry out all operations to prevent construction delays. Protect the Work at all times from the intrusion of water from any an all sources and maintain the site in a dewatered condition. Do not perform work on finished surfaces if the chance of rain exists. If rain occurs prior to the initial set of the finishes or coatings, prevent the rain from reaching the newly placed materials..2 Do not commence paving operations unless the surface temperature is steady at, or rising above 2 C..3 For asphalt penetration surfaces maintain environmental conditions (temperature, humidity, and ventilation) within limits recommended by Manufacturer for optimum results. Do not install products under environmental conditions outside Manufacturer's absolute limits..4 Perform work during proper minimum and maximum temperatures or provide controls to meet standards and specifications..5 Apply solvent-thinned paints only when temperatures of surfaces to be painted and surrounding air are between 45 and 95 deg F (7 and 35 deg C).

3 15ECS-MI-01WA / TCN Page 3 of 10.6 Do not apply paint in snow, rain, fog, or mist; windy conditions, or when relative humidity exceeds 85 percent; or at temperatures less than 5 deg F (3 deg C) above the dew point; or to damp or wet surfaces..7 Do not install paints or coatings on pavements until material is fully cured. Clean all surfaces in accordance with Manufacturers requirements and to ensure a durable and proper bond between materials. Review cleaned surfaces with the City of Toronto Representative for approval prior to placement..8 Protect all newly placed paints or coatings from any and all damage including weather elements, defacement or vandalism, from premature drying and excessively hot and cold temperatures..9 Protect all adjacent areas and structures, particularly planted areas, structures and existing pavements from contamination by work of this section. Make good all damage..10 The maximum allowable weight for equipment on the reservoir is 4000 kg per axel without soil. Given that the installation is on top of a reservoir, any vibration during court installation shall be minimal. 1.7 WARRANTY.1 Warranty all material and workmanship in this section from movement, settlement, sinking, deterioration, alligatoring, cracking or any other change in surface finish quality for a period of five (5) years from date of the Substantial Performance of Work. 1.8 APPROVED CONTRACTORS.1 Court Contractors Ltd..2 Tennex Systems Inc..3 Barber Sports Surfaces Ltd. 2 Products 2.1 MATERIALS ASPHALT PENETRATION COURT.1 Concrete brick curbing to be 5cm x 10cm x 20cm concrete brick flat on all surfaces..2 Granular A or 19mm crusher run limestone base to be as shown on drawings..3 Coarse aggregates: a complete crushed rock, fractured, slag or gravel or combination thereof, free of clay, silt and other deleterious materials.

4 15ECS-MI-01WA / TCN Page 4 of 10.4 Fine aggregates: composed of clean, hard, durable particles, manufactured from the exclusive crushing of rocks, stone or gravel and free of clay, silt or other deleterious materials mm clear stone to OPSS 1004 to be used as backfill and compacted to 98% SPD..6 Course Aggregate:.1 9.5mm (3/8") clear crushed limestone.2 6.4mm (1/4") clear crushed limestone.7 Trap Rock: Screenings 100% passing 3 mm screen to OPSS 1001 and Silica Sand: Fine, uniform Silica Sand, 30 to 70 mesh to OPSS 1001 and 1002 as manufactured by Barmin Inc. or approved equal..9 Asphalt Emulsion: Rapid setting emulsified RS-1 asphalt to OPSS Tack Coat: By Plexipave- Plexibond Coating. - or approved equal..11 Fibreglass Reinforcing: 10x20 mesh resin coated fibreglass or approved equal. Asphalt coated fabric is not acceptable.12 Levelling and Filler Coat: Plexipave. - Acrylic Resurfacer or approved equal. To be an acrylic filler coat resurfacer, capable of filling in surface voids and evening out minor surface irregularities. When applied under Manufacturer's specification, filler/resurfacer coat will be 100% compatible with surface finish..13 Colour Surfacing: Plexipave Plexipave Color Base and Plexichrome or approved equal. Colours to be used on the courts are to be green, blue and lines white. Acrylic latex compounds which will form a tough, durable finish surface, resistant to weather, oil, grease and other solvents and chemicals. The texture of the surface shall be slow/medium. Apply silica sand to surface to control texture and provide a surface that meets the above performance criteria. The amount of sand to be added and the particle size shall be in accordance with the Manufacturer's recommendations..14 Line Paint: Plexipave- Plexicolor Line Paint or approved equal, Flat, high-hide, 100% Acrylic non-marking paint, 100% compatible with the finished colour coat. The paint shall brush easily and have good flowing, leveling and spreading characteristics, and shall be suitable for application by spray equipment.

5 15ECS-MI-01WA / TCN Page 5 of 10 3 Execution 3.1 PREPARATION.1 The Contractor is responsible for staking out the tennis court areas in accordance with the drawings and construction details. The Contractor must review the staked layout with the City of Toronto Representative and Sir Winston Churchill Tennis Club Technical Representative prior to commencing work of this section..2 Subgrade shall be compacted to 98% Standard Proctor Density in accordance with ASTM D698-O0ae1 prior to placing subsequent materials. Submit testing verification in accordance with the specifications..3 Notify the City s Representative after completion of each stage, submitting copies of compaction testing and obtain approval prior to proceeding to each subsequent stage..4 Remove all soft areas and replace with approved material compacted to 100% Standard Proctor Density. 3.2 PERIMETER CONCRETE BRICK EDGE.1 Coordinate installation of the perimeter concrete brick edge 12 inches beyond installed fence post locations to ensure that the required depth for the surface and its supporting infrastructure is provided with proper allowances for court grades as per drawings and details..2 Fine grade sub grade eliminating uneven areas and filling low spots. Remove all debris. Excavate all soft and unstable areas in subgrade and backfill with granular A. Compact finished subgrade to 98% Standard Proctor Dry Density in accordance with ASTM D698-0Oae1..3 Prior to placing concrete brick edge, a suitable means for checking the alignment and elevations of forms during placing shall be provided. These checks shall be made frequently during placing of the concrete brick edge, and adjustments made as required until all concrete brick edge is in place..4 Obtain the City of Toronto Representative's approval before placing concrete brick edge..5 Finish exposed concrete brick edge with a smooth trowel finish, and correct surface irregularities before final set..6 Accurately coordinate net post sleeve extensions. Pipe sleeve extensions for net posts shall be placed accurately and plumb to be flush with finished court surface complete with winter caps.

6 15ECS-MI-01WA / TCN Page 6 of 10.7 Install net hold-down ring anchors accurately to be plumb and flush with the finished court surfacing..8 Protect the work until final set has occurred. 3.3 ASPHALT PENETRATION COURT.1 Set grade stakes on the court and all around the perimeter..2 Place specified granular and compact to 100% Standard Proctor Maximum Dry Density in accordance with ASTM D698-00ae1. Finished depth of granular shall be as shown on the drawings and details. The granular material will be placed in lifts of no more than 150mm and compacted to specification..3 On the approved compacted smooth granular base, spread 19mm dia. clear stone to a uniform depth of 25mm with allowances for subsequent layers below the established finished grade of the court. This material shall be placed with the assistance of a laser level and hydraulic receiver on the spreading equipment. High and low spots shall be levelled by removing or adding stone and re-rolling..4 After the 19mm dia. clear stone layer has been approved, apply R.S.1 asphalt emulsion at the rate of 0.6 L per m2 and immediately spread 9.5mm dia. HL 3 coarse aggregate to a depth of 16 mm until a uniform gradient has been established. The surface shall be rolled, low and high points (remove bumps and ridges) shall be levelled by removing or adding stone, and the surface shall be re-rolled. Check and confirm the surface with a 6 m straight edge..5 After the 9.5mm dia. HL-3 coarse aggregate layer has been approved, remove grade stakes and apply RS 1 asphalt emulsion at the rate of 0.9 litres per square metre and immediately spread 6.4 mm dia. coarse aggregate to a depth of 10 mm until a uniform gradient has been established. Broom in thoroughly until all voids are filled and roll lightly. Check and confirm the surface with a 6 m straight edge..6 After the 6.4 mm clear stone layer has been approved, apply RS-1 asphalt emulsion at a rate of 0.3 litres per square metre and immediately thereafter spread sand at a rate of 2.3 kilograms per square metre. Broom in thoroughly until all voids are filled and no excess sand remains on the surface. Roll lightly..7 After the sand operation has been approved, apply RS-1 asphalt emulsion at a rate of 0.25 litres per square metre and immediately thereafter spread trap rock screenings at a rate of 7.8 kilograms per square metre. Broom with a fine hair broom until the entire area is uniformly covered and perform final light rolling..8 When the traprock has thoroughly set, broom off excess, remove and dispose of all loose material from the court surface, around net posts, fence posts and net anchors and from perimeter concrete pad.

7 15ECS-MI-01WA / TCN Page 7 of 10.9 Thoroughly sweep the courts to remove all dirt, dust and other loose material completely from the surface. Vacuum if necessary..10 Examine the entire court surface for unevenness, irregularities, minor depressions, or excessive roughness. Roll the surface with a tandem steel wheel roller as necessary to achieve a true level surface. Roller must adhere to reservoir weight restrictions..11 Dynamic rollers will not be permitted for compaction..12 After rolling, check surface with a 3m straight edge and mark all depressed areas greater than 3 mm in depth. Patch and level all such areas and around all posts as necessary to achieve the tolerance with the patching mix specified..13 Pay careful attention to the feathering of the edge of the patches so that the patch blends completely with the surrounding surface. All patches shall be finished neat and even to the satisfaction of the City of Toronto s Representative. Allow all patches to dry sufficiently and then roll to ensure evenness with the surrounding surface. Allow patches to set completely before proceeding..14 Temporary Playing Lines: The playing lines on the courts shall be accurately laid out by survey and temporarily marked on the court to ensure coordination with the final court surface. 3.4 GENERAL TACK AND FIBREGLASS INSTALLTION.1 The tack coat material, as specified and mixed with the specified coat application amount of water, shall be applied over the entire surface. Avoid excessive application and or ponding which may cause bleeding through the successive coatings. The fibreglass shall be rolled out into the Plexibond or approved equal and stretched tightly over the entire surface. Adjacent panels shall be overlapped 3 minimum. Wrinkles in the fibreglass membrane shall be corrected prior to application of Acrylic Resurfacer or approved equal. 3.5 FILLER COAT/RESURFACING UNDERLAYMENT APPLICATION.1 Two (2) coats of filler shall be applied over the entire court surface, and only when all areas of the underlying surface are thoroughly cured as per the Manufacturer's specifications..2 The filler may be diluted with clean, potable water. No other thinning agents shall be permitted. Dilution shall be in strict accordance with the Manufacturer's directions. Over dilution shall not be accepted. Silica sand may be added in minor amounts to properly fill all surface voids and even out any surface unevenness.

8 15ECS-MI-01WA / TCN Page 8 of 10.3 The coating shall be applied by broom or squeegee in multiple applications to achieve a total application rate of 40 to 74 litres of undiluted material per 100 sq m of surface area. No successive coat shall be applied until the preceding coat is thoroughly cured..4 Each application of the filler coat shall be permitted to dry thoroughly. The surface, prior to the application of the colour coat, shall have a uniform appearance and be free from ridges and tool marks. 3.6 COLOUR COAT.1 Ensure that net post footings and hold-down rings are installed as detailed and set to Finished court elevation prior to finished coatings or final surfacing..2 Application of colour coat shall be in accordance with the recommendations of the Manufacturer..3 Thoroughly mix colour surfacing material and apply using squeegee, soft haired brooms, short-napped rollers, or a combination of these to obtain a surface of uniform texture, thickness and colour, free from tool marks. Thick films shall not be left on the surface to prevent shrinkage cracks or shiners.4 The colour coat system shall consist of minimum of two applications of the appropriate material specified, diluted as per Manufacturer's specification. The second application shall be at right angles to the previous to achieve a total coverage of surface. Avoid excessive application that would result in cracking and alligatoring. Add sufficient silica sand to produce desired texture. If necessary an additional coat of colour coat without sand shall be applied to reduce or soften the texture to that specified. The finish surface shall be uniform in texture thickness and colour..5 Care shall be taken not to leave any ridges in the material when spreading. If any ridges are left or found, the material will be allowed to thoroughly dry and ridges will be scraped off with the edge of steel trowel. All scrape marks must then be hidden/covered by a subsequent application Provide personnel to protect the finished surface from traffic until thoroughly cured. Any damages or defects occurring as a result of failure to comply with this requirement shall be repaired by the Contractor at no extra cost to the Owner. 3.7 PLAYING LINES.1 Playing lines shall be painted on the courts only after the colour has thoroughly dried. All lines shall be uniformly 50 mm wide, accurately located (± 3 mm) marked, and painted with white line paint. The edges of the lines shall be well defined and sharp.

9 15ECS-MI-01WA / TCN Page 9 of NETS, POSTS, ANCHORS AND ACCESSORIES.1 Net Hold-down Ring Anchor: install in the centre of each court in line with each pair of net posts. The pipe shall be placed at an angle of approximately 30 degrees from vertical until top of pipe is flush with new court surface..2 Install net, net straps and net post installation only after all surfacing and painting works have been completed. 3.9 TOLERANCES.1 Flatness:.1 Maximum variation of 10 mm measured with 3 m straight edge. Tolerance does not allow for uniformly high or low grades..2 Scheduled Compacted Thickness:.1 Within 6mm 3.10 TESTING.1 Compaction testing of sub-base, base granular is to be included stipulated price of penetration asphalt. The contractor is responsible for coordinating all testing..1 Provide field inspection and testing reports..2 Take samples and perform tests in accordance with TAI MS FOOTINGS, NET POSTS, AND FIXTURES.1 Footings: See Contract Drawings..2 Ground sleeves shall be schedule 40 PVC pipe, 24" long four (4) inches above the top of the 2" base course..3 Tie downs: Install centre tie-down anchors, compatible with nets. Anchors footings shall be per Contract Drawings. Top of footings shall protrude four (4) inches above the top of the 2" base course NETS AND ACCESSORIES.1 Net Hold-down Ring Anchor: install in the centre of each court in line with each pair of net posts. The pipe shall be placed at an angle of approximately 30 degrees from venical until top of pipe is flush with new court surface..2 Install net, net straps and net post installation only after all surfacing and painting workshave been completed.

10 15ECS-MI-01WA / TCN Page 10 of LIMITATIONS.1 Suspend all surfacing operations or resurfacing operations if the following conditions are present:.1 Rainfall is predicted within 24 hours, or during rainfall..2 The air temperature is 10 C (50 F) or falling..3 The court surface temperature is greater than 60 C (140 F) 3.14 PROTECTION.1 Protect tennis court surfaces, posts, tie downs, nets and winding devices from damage by work of other trades until accepted by owner CLEAN-UP.1 Promptly as the work proceeds and upon completion, clean up and remove from the site rubbish and surplus material resulting from the work in this section. Contractor shall ensure that they dispose of all rubbish and debris in following with all applicable codes and laws..2 Reinstate any damaged or disturbed areas with like materials to satisfaction of the City of Toronto Representative. Contractor shall administer and be responsible for all trades..3 The Contractor shall leave the areas in and around the courts clean, neat, and tidy with well defined surfaces. Remove all contamination or spills from the site and shall ensure all materials are dispose of correctly in following all applicable codes and laws..4 Asphalt paved surfaces shall have clear and defined edges and materials shall not be present or contaminate adjacent areas..5 At the completion of asphalt operations and prior to final inspection, clean all perimeter concrete work and other structures to remove contamination by asphaltic or other materials resulting from the work.
