5 Handling This is a guide as to what is recommended by the HSE, this is not an exhaustive list of regulations and best practices, for more information on safety in the workplace and while handling please go to WARNING: Some Cast stone fireplaces can weigh in excess of 120kg (for the whole product). DO NOT attempt to move components without assistance. The following information is taken from the HSE Health and Safety Manual Handling guide, to view the original document and for more information please visit Safety Information Where possible use some form of lifting aid. Do not try to lift more weight than is comfortable for the people lifting. Always wear gloves, safety footwear and any other safety equipment that may be necessary for the environment you are working in. When lifting keep your back straight and bend your legs, do not bend your back. Avoid twisting of the waist instead reposition your feet. Avoid bending of the upper body where possible. Always bend from the knees rather than the waist. Where possible keep the load close to the body to reduce strain. Always grip with the palm of the hand rather than the fingertips as this allows for a more secure hold. Do not carry pieces above waist height where possible to lower the risk of injury or strain. Follow your own risk assessment for hazards unique to your area of installation. Location of Fireplace Before installation of your new fireplace please ensure that the location of your new fireplace meets the relevant regulations. Please read Approved Document J (URL for which is listed in the References section) thoroughly before installation as the location selected may be unsuitable without modification. 4

7 Gluing and Cementing When assembling the product please use adhesive to hold the components of the product together. When Assembling DO NOT place components directly next to each other, ensure you use a minimum of 6mm spacers to ensure there is room for thermal expansion. WARNING: DO NOT solely use adhesive and jointing compound to hold your fireplace together. Please ensure that the included fixings are used appropriately. Failure to do so may result in serious or fatal injury. Use of a high strength fireproof and flexible adhesive is required to allow for thermal expansion, our recommendation is to use a synthetic resin (examples of which include acrylic or epoxy resins or similar). Ensure the adhesive identifies stone as a suitable substrate. Ensure that the areas are thoroughly covered, do not use small spots of adhesive as there may not be enough strength. Chatsworth Stoves and Surrounds is not liable for failure of the fireplace due to inappropriate adhesive or inadequate application. Use of an adhesive that is not fireproof may result in a fire. After assembly of the product please apply the included jointing compound in the gaps between the components. The compound is intended to be used at a ratio of 4:1 Sand to Cement. And is to be mixed with water to be damp, do not mix in too much water as this will cause the compound to effloresce. Fixing Details Chatsworth fireplaces are designed to be affixed to the wall using L shaped cramps to ensure stability and safety. DO NOT under any circumstances assemble without these fixings. With this fireplace there are two L shaped cramps. Customers must provide their own plugs and screws, plugs and screws shown are only for demonstration and are not indicative of what is suitable. Fixing Diagram Fig. 2 Shown in fig. 3 are the components required for each bracket, 2 screws, 2 plugs and the supplied bracket. Fig. 3 Fixings are to be used as shown in fig. 2 with plugs in the wall and component and screws holding them to the bracket. Please use appropriate hardware for your wall type. 6

8 Assembly 1. Fig. 4 Place the hearth down in the location selected for the fireplace, if a solid fuel appliance is being used at this time ensure you cut the hearth (referred to as a slabbed hearth) to allow for thermal expansion. The hearth for this fireplace is supplied in 3 pieces however even with the three pieces depending on the appliance to be used it may be necessary to cut the hearth into more pieces Ensure a suitable stone cutting blade is used to give a clean cut. Use cement to adhere the hearth to the floor ensuring a full bed is laid. Please ensure the hearth is level when laid on the cement bed. Important: For Regulations on your hearth please refer to the appropriate building regulations in particular the area underneath the hearth to ensure suitable distances to combustible materials. (Approved Document J in the references gives more information) 2. Fig. 5 Before final assembly and adhering of the legs predrill the holes for the provided fixings. After drilling, position the legs in place with adhesive applied and attach the fixings to the wall. When drilling holes in the wall please ensure you are working to building regulations. Please check that suitable plugs and screws are being used for your wall type and application. 7
