2 Renfrew Victoria Hospital ASPHALT TACK COATS Section Professional Building Page 2 PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 APPLICATION.1 Apply asphalt tack coat only on clean and dry surface..2 Dilute asphalt emulsion with water at 1:1 ratio for application..1 Mix thoroughly by pumping or other method approved by Consultant..3 Apply asphalt tack coat evenly to pavement surface at rate not to exceed 0.7L/m²..4 Paint contact surfaces of curbs, gutters, headers, manholes and like structures with thin, uniform coat of asphalt tack coat material..5 Do not apply asphalt tack coat when air temperature is less than 10 C or when rain is forecast within 2 hours of application..6 Apply asphalt tack coat only on unfrozen surface..7 Evenly distribute localized excessive deposits of tack coat by brooming..8 Where traffic is to be maintained, treat no more than one half of width of surface in one application..9 Keep traffic off tacked areas until asphalt tack coat has set..10 Re-tack contaminated or disturbed areas..11 Permit asphalt tack coat to set before placing asphalt pavement. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 MATERIALS.1 Geotextile: woven Terrafix 200W or Mirafi HP270 equivalent or better..2 Granular base (Granular A) and sub-base (Granular B Type II) material: to Ontario Provincial Standards Section Hot Mix per OPSS Surface course HL4 (PG58-34)..5 Binder course - HL8 (PG58-34). 2.2 EQUIPMENT.1 Pavers: mechanical self-powered pavers capable of spreading mix within specified tolerances, true to line, grade and crown indicated..2 Rollers: sufficient number of rollers of type and weight to obtain specified density of compacted mix..3 Vibratory rollers for parking lots and driveways:.1 Minimum drum diameter: 750 mm..2 Maximum amplitude of vibration (machine setting): 0.5 mm for lifts less than 40 mm thick..4 Haul trucks: of sufficient number and of adequate size, speed and condition to ensure orderly and continuous operation and as follows:.1 Boxes with tight metal bottoms..2 Covers of sufficient size and weight to completely cover and protect asphalt mix when truck fully loaded..3 In cool weather or for long hauls, insulate entire contact area of each truck box..5 Suitable hand tools.

PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 SUBGRADE SURFACE PREPARATION AND INSPECTION.1 Subexcavate all topsoil, earth fill, organics, organic-bearing materials and other deleterious materials from the planned pavement areas to the depths required to place the recommended pavement structures up to final grade..2 Proof roll the exposed subgrade surface with a heavy roller to reveal any possible overly soft or wet areas. Any deleterious areas thus delineated should be replaced with granular material compacted to a minimum of 98% of its Standard Proctor Maximum Dry Density..3 Place woven geotextile equivalent or better than Terrafix 200W or Mirafi HP270 over the exposed and approved pavement subgrade surface, in accordance with manufacturer s specifications..4 Verify grades of subgrade drains and other items set in paving area for conformity with elevations and sections before placing granular base and sub-base material..5 Obtain approval of subgrade by Consultant before placing granular sub-base and base. 3.2 GRANULAR SUB-BASE AND GRANULAR BASE.1 Place granular base and sub-base material on clean unfrozen surface, free from snow and ice..2 Place granular base and sub-base to compacted thicknesses as indicated. Do not place frozen material..3 Place in layers not exceeding 150 mm compacted thickness. Compact to density not less than 100% respective Standard Proctor Maximum Dry Density..4 Finished base surface to be within 10 mm of specified grade, but not uniformly high or low. 3.3 ASPHALT TACK COAT.1 In accordance with Section Asphalt Tack Coats. 3.4 PLANT AND MIXING REQUIREMENTS.1 In accordance with ASTM D ASPHALT CONCRETE PAVING.1 Obtain approval of tack coat base and primer before placing asphalt mix..2 Place asphalt mix only when base or previous course is dry and air temperature is above 5 C..3 Place asphalt concrete in compacted layers not exceeding 50 mm.

5 Renfrew Victoria Hospital HOT MIX ASPHALT Section Professional Building CONCRETE PAVING Page 3.4 Minimum 135 C mix temperature required when spreading..5 Maximum 160 C mix temperature permitted at any time..6 Compact each course with roller as soon as it can support roller weight without undue cracking or displacement..7 Compact parking lot and driveway asphalt concrete to density not less than 95% of density obtained with Marshall specimens prepared in accordance with ASTM D 1559 from samples of mix being used. Roll until roller marks are eliminated..8 Keep roller speed slow enough to avoid mix displacement and do not stop roller on fresh pavement..9 Moisten roller wheels with water to prevent pick up of material..10 Compact mix with hot tampers or other equipment approved by Consultant, in areas inaccessible to roller..11 Finish surface to be within 10 mm of design elevation and with no irregularities greater than 10 mm in 4.5 m..12 Repair areas showing checking, rippling or segregation as directed by Consultant. 3.6 JOINTS.1 Remove surplus material from surface of previously laid strip. Do not deposit on surface of freshly laid strip..2 Paint contact surfaces of existing structures such as manholes, curbs or gutters with bituminous material prior to placing adjacent pavement..3 For cold joints, cut back to full depth vertical face and tack face with hot asphalt..4 For longitudinal joints, overlap previously laid strip with spreader by 25 to 50 mm. 3.7 TESTING.1 Inspection and testing of asphalt pavement will be carried out by designated testing laboratory. Compaction results every 20 m and gradation testing 1 set of results per day for compliance with mix design. 3.8 PROTECTION.1 Keep vehicular traffic off newly paved areas until paving surface temperature has cooled below 38 C. Do not permit stationary loads on pavement until 24 hours after placement..2 Provide access to buildings as required. Arrange paving schedule so as not to interfere with normal use of premises. 8 Renfrew Victoria Hospital CONCRETE WALKS AND CURBS Section Professional Building Page GRANULAR BASE.1 Obtain Consultant's approval of subgrade before placing granular base..2 Place granular base material to lines, widths, and depths as indicated..3 Compact granular base in maximum 150 mm layers to at least 98% of maximum density to ASTM D CONCRETE.1 Obtain Consultant's approval of granular base prior to placing concrete..2 Do concrete work in accordance with Section Cast-in- Place Concrete..3 Immediately after floating, give sidewalk surface uniform broom finish to produce regular corrugations not exceeding 2 mm deep, by drawing broom in direction normal to centre line..4 Provide edging as indicated with 10 mm radius edging tool. 3.4 TOLERANCES.1 Finish surfaces to within 3 mm in 3 m as measured with 3 m straightedge placed on surface. 3.5 EXPANSION AND CONTRACTION JOINTS.1 Install expansion joints at intervals of 6 m..2 When sidewalk is adjacent to curb, make joints of curb, gutters and sidewalk coincide. 3.6 ISOLATION JOINTS.1 Install isolation joints around manholes and catch basins and along length adjacent to concrete curbs, catch basins, buildings, or permanent structure..2 Install joint filler in isolation joints in accordance with Section Cast-in-Place Concrete..3 Seal isolation joints with sealant. 3.7 CURING.1 Cure concrete by adding moisture continuously in accordance with CSA-A23.1/A23.2 to exposed finished surfaces for at least 1 day after placing, or sealing moisture in by curing compound as directed by Consultant..2 Where burlap is used for moist curing, place two prewetted layers on concrete surface and keep continuously wet during curing period..3 Apply curing compound evenly to form continuous film, in accordance with manufacturer's requirements. 3.8 BACKFILL.1 Allow concrete to cure for 7 days prior to backfilling.
