1 Mirafi geosynthetics are used as integral components in the design and construction of a variety of marine & hydraulic engineering structures. The materials are easy to install beneath the water surface, in difficult conditions, and once in place provide continued performance. Mirafi Geotubes installed as core of sand dune, creating a monolithic structure to protect against high waves and erosion during storms. Upon completion of the installation, the tubes are covered with sand and dune grass is planted. The result is a natural-looking dune and one that will provide long term protection SURF LAND SAND FILL 3 CIRCUMFERENCE SAND FILLED ANCHOR TUBE SCOUR APRON EXISTING DUNE (ELEVATION WILL VARY) Cross-section showing installation of the Mirafi Geotube in a typical sand dune.

Design Considerations TC Mirafi s Geotube system uses a woven geotextile that is formed into a tube. The tube s diameter and length is determined by project requirements. The tube is filled by direct coupling to a hydraulic pumping system conveying dredged material. Designed with appropriately sized openings, the geosynthetic tube retains fill material while allowing water to permeate through the tube wall. Geotubes permanently trap granular material in both dry and underwater construction. Minimum impact on the environment while providing a beneficial use for dredge material. Cost. Geotubes are a cost effective alternative when compared to traditional construction materials and methods. Fabrication. Geotubes are fabricated from a high strength woven geotextile with special high strength seaming techniques to resist pressures during pumping operations. GEOTUBE ANCHOR TUBE FILL SAND ANCHOR TUBE FILL SAND SCOUR APRON FILL SAND Typical cross-section showing the relationship between the Mirafi Geotube and the Scour Apron. The intent of the apron is for the anchor tubes to bury themselves and protect the Geotube from scour.

3 installation: 1 Deployment of scour apron 2 Deployment of Geotube 3 Initial pumping of Mirafi Geotube ; The pumping process begins with filling the geotube with water to the approximate vertical height required. 4 Filling operation of the Mirafi Geotube : Fill Material is pumped into the tube, displacing the water. Typical water/ sand ratio during pumping is 90% water, 10% sand.

4 applications: Groins Breakwaters High tidal current plus wave action from marine traffic was causing considerable shoreline erosion and diminishing the island s size. An erosion control protection plan called for three Mirafi Geotubes to be installed in a finger groin layout. As shown above, not only did the erosion cease, but beach accretion occurred. Sand Dune Cores Containment Dikes for Dredge Material Shoreline Protection Mirafi Geotubes used as jetties promote the natural restoration of shorelines by the process of beach accretion. Wildlife Habitats Wetland Construction Dewatering of fine grain Mirafi Geotubes can be used for wetland reclamation to create and retain the unique soil and water relationsip that is indigenous to coastal marsh environments. material

5 geocontainers Geocontainers are large fabric cells containing large quantities of dredged soil and dropped into the open water to form underwater berms, dikes or other earthen structures. They are manufactured from high-strength geotextiles and assembled by means of a special seaming technique. They can be designed for hydraulic or mechanical filling equipment. Because of their cost effectiveness, simplicity in placement and minimum impact on the environment, Geocontainers have proven to be a very viable alternative to traditional techniques. applications: Construction of underwater dikes and berms Protection from underwater scour due to current. Soil Containment In marine applications, Mirafi geosynthetics serving as containment devices enable placement of fill and spoil materials on the seabed in an orderly and controlled manner. Mirafi geosynthetics prevent the loss of contained fill and spoil material. Submerged structures, such as breakwaters, groins and spoil-containment areas can be cost-effectively constructed using this technique. Barge-Placed Soil Containment Mirafi Geocontainers are constructed of high strength woven geosynthetics using special seaming techniques to contain available granular fill material. Sunk accurately into position by split bottom barge, Mirafi Geocontainers are designed to provide a desireable alternative to rock or loose soil placement. 7 geobags 6 Manufactured from high strength woven geotextiles, Geobags have proven to be an efficient and cost-effective way of placing large samd bags for erosion protection as well as building underwater structures. After being filled with sand, a 3 cubic yard Geobag is sewn closed in preparation for placement. applications: Construction of underwater dikes and berms Construction of temporary flood dikes Shoreline Protection On the Mississippi River 38,000 Geobags were used to construct underwater dikes in depths up to 70 feet. Repairing breaches in dikes

TC Mirafi Services TC Mirafi s total customer service begins with the industry s most complete line of geosynthetic solutions, complemented by our worldwide product placement through the largest distributor network in the industry. Our distrbutors and agents maintain a local inventory of commonly specified products to prevent costly delays and give contractors ultimate scheduling flexibility. Within our manufacturing facilities, our uncompromising commitment to quality is evidenced by our on-line and in-lab quality control testing procedures, which are performed strickly in accordance with industry guidelines. Most importantly, our ability to provide geosynthetic solutions is not limited to our existing product line.
