7 MARKING GUIDELINE -7- NC410(E)(N24)V QUESTION 4: BUILD BRICK STEPS A riser is the vertical part of the step. 1. When we design a step we have to remember that the tread has to be wide enough to put one's foot on. 2. When we walk down stairs, we put our heel down first and we do not want the rest of our foot sticking out over the edge. 3. We also do want the risers to be too high otherwise we would work far too hard to get to the top. 4. When designing a step remember that older people and young children need a lot more support them most of us do. 5. The minimum of a step has to be 250 tread and maximum of 200 for riser. 6. We may want to make it easier for people to walk up and down stairs that is why you will often see wider treads and shorter risers than the minimum and the maximum specified. 7. When we build a flight of stairs, we must always make sure that all risers are of the same height so that people do not lose their balance. 8. Think again of older people and younger children, they can fall if they are not sure how high the next will be. 9. The tread must be of the same depth unless the stairway curves.
