13 Fixing Guide GENERAL FIXING There are a wide range of adhesives in the Bostik range, both powdered and ready mixed, for wall and floor applications. Preparation Fixing and grouting should not be carried out if the material, substrate or ambient temperature is below 0C. At temperatures in excess of 00C it is likely that setting times will be accelerated to such a level that the material becomes impossible to use. All substrates should be sound, rigid and free from oils, chemicals and other materials that can act as parting agents. PRIMING Primers are designed to allow adhesives to perform as designed and / or to dry correctly: They also: Reduce porosity of backgrounds Increase adhesion on non-porous backgrounds Add surface strength to friable surfaces Sealing a surface is different to priming in that the substrate may need more than two applications to achieve a barrier or reduce porosity Despite misled beliefs that priming WILL ALWAYS improve a tiling job, this is not always correct. Unnecessary priming can add two potential failure points - the bond of the adhesive to the primer and of the primer to the substrate It is not always necessary to prime everyday tiling jobs on good surfaces Under more demanding circumstances special primers may be required If a background is unsecure it should be repaired or replaced rather than just primed with diluted Bostik AP 0 Flexibond. PRIMER SELECTION GUIDE AP 0 FLEXIBOND ACRYLIC UNIVERSAL PRIMER ACRYLIC WALL BACKGROUNDS Gypsum Plaster Gypsum Skimmed Plasterboard Cement Render Fibre-reinforced Cement Sheets Plywood WBP Lightweight Blocks Dense Concrete Blocks FLOOR BASES Sand:Cement Screed Concrete Asphalt (internal) Plywood WBP mm Calcium Sulphate (Anhydrite) Epoxy Primer If using cementitious adhesives. Apply coat to both sides and edges of the board. If required i.e. surface is dusty or friable. APPLICATION Bostik adhesives are specifically developed for easy application & workability. Once mixed, the adhesive should be applied to the correctly prepared substrate surface, using the correct tools. The correct tool will be a notched trowel, suitable for the material, the application and the application method i.e. thin bed (up to mm) or thick bed (over mm). Use of the correct tool will help to ensure a full bed of adhesive is applied between the tile and the substrate. Combing the adhesive with a notched trowel will form ribs, which will be squashed down to form a solid bed when the tiles are applied. should be applied to the adhesive with a twisting or sliding action to bed them in fully. This should be undertaken generally within 0 minutes of applying the adhesive. Depending on the adhesive and substrate this open time may be increased or reduced. The open time of an individual adhesive should be checked before use. Subsequent tiles should be laid by placing the tile adjacent to the previous tile and twisting away slightly. This application method ensures that a clean grout joint is formed to enable later works to be completed satisfactorily. It is good practice to remove a tile occasionally as fixing proceeds, to check that adequate contact and wetting out is being maintained with the adhesive. Powder: Adhesives should be mixed to a thick, smooth, slump-free consistency. Suggested mix proportions for each adhesive are given on the packaging. The use of a mechanical stirrer for at least five minutes will help obtain a suitably useable mix. Ready mixed: Contents should be throughly stirred before use. Tiling Large Format Wall & Floor Over recent years, the combination of improved tile manufacturing technology and interior design trends has seen a huge increase in demand for larger format tiles. A large format is considered to be a tile with the length of at least one edge greater than 00 mm (nominal) or a facial area greater than,00 cm² (nominal). Therefore a nominal 00 mm x 00 mm tile would be considered to be large format. Prior to fixing large tiles, it is important to ensure the suitability of the surface to be tiled. There are industry specifications for weight per m² depending on the surface being tiled. Time should be spent checking the flatness of the wall or floor, the larger the tile, the flatter the surface will have to be. Ready mixed adhesives are not recommended as they are thin bed and rely on water loss to achieve full bonding. The cure time is severely slowed with any type of large format tile therefore we only recommend a polymer enhanced adhesive. Suitable Bostik adhesive are: WALLS Bostik MC00 Porcelain Standard Bostik MC0 OPF Bostik MC0 Stone Flex Full guidance is given in British Standard, BS 8 Wall and Floor Tiling. 14 GROUTING A range of coloured grouts and silicones are available for both walls and floors and it is, therefore, important that the correct material is chosen. In general it is the tiles that are selected for colour and pattern though the colour and joint width of the grout can have a significant effect on the overall appearance. Where possible, a trial area should be viewed using the tile grout combination chosen. The following guidelines are general to nearly all tiles, though special consideration should be made when tiling natural tiles such as terracotta and marble, or specialised tiles such as mosaics as well as to special grouts such as epoxy systems. Preparation The grouting process will result in some pressure being applied to the tiles already affixed and it is, therefore, important that the adhesive is left sufficiently long before the grouting operation commences. This can range from hours for a fast set application, to in excess of to 8 hours for a paste adhesive application. If the grouting is undertaken too soon, the pressures applied can cause the bond between tile and adhesive to break. Once broken the bond will never be reformed. For fixing guidelines see the relevant section. The joints to be grouted should be clean and free from adhesive, dust or dirt. As a general rule of thumb the grout depth should be twice the desired grout width. Where white grout is to be used it is often considered that the use of a white adhesive will result in less grout and a neater job. Unless the material is a fix and grout system, this should not be done. A thinner layer of grout will be less stable and may result in the need to re-grout at an early age. Application Grouts should be mixed to a thick, smooth consistency. Excess water should be avoided as this will give rise to increased risk of cracks forming in the joints and will produce a weaker mix that will be less permeable and less durable. If the grout is mixed too dry it will be hard to apply and may result in an unsightly finish. Suggested mix proportions are given on the grout packaging. The use of a mechanical stirrer for at least five minutes will help in obtaining a suitably useable mix. Grout should be thoroughly worked into the tile joints with a grouting trowel or rubber faced float until the joints are completely filled to the face of the tile. Surplus grout should be removed from the tile face with a rubber squeegee. When the joint is finger hard, i.e. stiff enough to withstand the pressure of a finger, the joints can then be pointed by compressing the joint with a rounded piece of wood or pointing trowel or other suitable material. Before grouting highly glazed tiles, a small test area should be sampled to ensure that the glaze is resistant to scratching. If Bostik AP 0 Flexibond is mixed in with the grout or polymer modified grouts are used, any surplus material should be cleaned off the tile surface immediately with a sponge and clean water. This mix should not be allowed to dry on the surface of the tile as it will be difficult to clean off. Because of their small size, attempts to grout them in the normal manner can prove onerous and is often, therefore, not undertaken as precisely as required. However, mosaics should be grouted in the same manner as larger format tiles. With paper faced mosaics a different fixing method needs to be followed. The mosaics are, as described, attached to a paper sheet for ease of storage etc. To grout these tiles, the grouting is undertaken prior to fixing, from the rear of the tile. A full grout joint is applied from the rear and the back of the tile cleaned thoroughly. The paper adhered sheet of mosaics is then affixed as normal ensuring a full bed of adhesive is used. Once set the paper face can then be removed, the tiles cleaned up and full grout joints are ensured. 19 Calcium Sulphate Screeds TESTED FOR USE ON LAFARGE GYVLON SCREEDS A Calcium Sulphate (often referred to as Gypsum or Anhydrite) screed is a free flowing screed that utilises a different binder than traditional sand and cement screeds. The binder in it s various forms can be collectively known as Calcium Sulphate. The use of this material is becoming more widespread as it offers a faster application for the screeding contractor with minimal shrinkage enabling thin applications (compared to sand and cement) and does not require any reinforcement. This is beneficial for the screeding contractor but must be taken into account by the tiler. It is however very difficult for the tiler to be able to identify the calcium sulphate screed to that of a traditional one other than by the colour which generally appears to be lighter. If a cement based adhesive is applied directly to a Calcium Sulphate screed the cement can react with the Calcium Sulphate resulting in the formation of a crystal structure called Ettringite. This will result in expansion which will break the bond at this interface resulting in a separation of the two materials. Concrete Base Anhydrite Screed Bostik Epoxy Primer Adhesive Grout PREPARATION Surface Laitance Where necessary the screeding contractor will usually remove any surface laitance (a shiny, hard crust) prior to any further works being carried out. If laitance is still present this must be removed first before continuing. The screed should then be vacuumed to remove all dust and friable material so that the surface is clean, dry and sound. Moisture Content / Drying This type of screed usually takes approximately mm/day up to 0 mm thick and you should add days/mm above 0 mm (based on a sealed site with controlled environment). The tiling work should not be undertaken on a screed with a moisture content above 0.% (or an RH of 7% or above when tested with a Surface Hygrometer). Sealing the Screed The screed should be sealed with a primer that will provide a barrier to prevent any contact between the cementitious adhesive and the Calcium Sulphate screed. We recommend Bostik Screedmaster Epoxy Primer (diluted as below). This is a two part epoxy primer and must be allowed to dry to a translucent, tacky film before subsequent work is undertaken ( to hrs). Tiling should be undertaken within days and the surface should be protected from dust and other contaminants. Bostik Screedmaster Epoxy Primer is a two component water dispersible primer. Supplied as a kg two component set. Diluted with litres of water Coverage on Calcium Sulphate approx. 00 m Quick and easy to apply Specified/approved by major manufacturers of these screeds. For calcium sulphate application mix the materials in a larger tub mixing Part B (hardener - small kg tub) and Part A ( kg tub) completely until a uniform colour is obtained, using an electric drill and propeller blade (typically minutes to mix) then slowly add litres of clean cold water whilst continuing to mix. Only mix the components when ready to apply and apply as soon as mixing is completed using brush or roller. Apply adhesives within 8 hrs of priming to achieve best bond. 20 Movement (Expansion) Joints TILES ADHESIVE CONCRETE POSITIONING MOVEMENT JOINT SAND CEMENT SCREED Movement joints should be positioned in accordance with the recommendations set out in BS 8 Part. FLOOR TILE CONSTRUCTIONS Position exterior or interior movement joints: Over existing joints in the base. Around the floor perimeter and around any feature interrupting the floor surface e.g. structural features, fixed plant and machinery etc. At. to 0 m centres, depending on subfloor construction, along the width and length of the floor and over supporting beams or walls, in large areas especially on suspended floors. In heavy traffic areas the edges of the movement joint may need to be reinforced with a metal edge. Contact Bostik Technical Services for more information. Note. Stresses may result from factors such as drying shrinkage, deflection and moisture movements in the base and thermal and moisture changes affecting the flooring. These stresses can sometimes cause loss of adhesion and bulging or cracking of the flooring. To counteract this, movement joints extending through the tiling and its bed should be incorporated in the installation. Movement joints for floor tiling are as follows: Flexible joints aligned to structural movement joints (EXPANSION JOINTS). Flexible joints to accommodate smaller movements than structural joints (DAY JOINTS). Contraction joints which are non-compressible to relieve tension (TILED FINISH). STRUCTUAL MOVEMENT JOINTS Structural movement joints in the bed and tiling should be positioned directly over and be continuous with structural movement joints in the base. OTHER MOVEMENT JOINTS Flexible joints should be placed over supporting walls and beams at intermediate positions to accommodate deflection of the base and movements in the flooring. Flexible joints should be used around floor perimeters and to divide the floor into areas of approx. to metre bays. Wherever possible they should coincide with structural features, e.g. columns and door openings, or they can be planned to provide a decorative panelled effect. Where high temperatures are expected, for instance around boilers, over heating installations INCLUDING UNDERFLOOR/TILE HEATING or from strong sunlight, an assessment of the likely temperature range in the subfloor should be made to determine whether and where any additional allowance for movement joints are necessary. On floors that have to withstand hard-rimmed wheel traffic or the dragging of heavy loads, the position of movement joints should, where possible, be planned so that they do not occur in the traffic area. Where this is not practicable the joints should be of types having their edges reinforced with metal or rigid plastics sections. Joints other than those protected by metal or rigid plastics edging, subject to traffic heavier than light pedestrian, should not be wider than 0 mm. Information on the permissible maximum and minimum joint widths should be obtained from the manufacturer of the particular joint filler selected. MOVEMENT JOINTS IN WALLS Interior Wall Tiling Position movement joints: Over existing movement joints. Where tiling butts up to other materials. At junctions between different substrate materials where the tiling continues across different types of substrate. TILES EXTERIOR WALL TILE CONSTRUCTIONS Position movement joints: Over existing movement joints. Where cladding butts up to other materials. At junctions between different substrate materials where the tiling continues across different types of substrate. Horizontally at storey heights and vertically between to. m apart. VERTICAL MOVEMENT JOINT At internal vertical corners and at between. to 0 m centres, depending on construction, vertically and horizontally in large tiled areas. Apply Silicone Building Sealant to all vertical and horizontal movement joints in walls. TILES Try to locate them over movement joints in structural substrate. Where structural substrate materials change. At external angles vertically between 0. m and m from the angle. Apply Silicone Building Sealant to all vertical and horizontal movement joints in walls. 8 9
