2 Design for all Made in Germany ORIENTATION SAFETY GUIDANCE For more than 40 years our company has been located in Amberg, in the Upper Palatinate (Bavaria) and is still family-owned with 100 employees: 1974 Helmut Moedel started the sign manufactory with one single silk-screen printer. Now he handed the entrepreneurial responsibility for the company over to his sons Christian and Martin. But how to orientate in the interior? A tactile legend explains the plan. e.g. lines = footprint more lines = stair etc. Right, first you get an general idea of the building! 20 HANDRAIL SIGNS Blind and visually impaired people do have less possibilities to orientate in a building than sighted people. Take the chance and help towards design for all with handrail signs simple and less effort. Which information is needed? How many stairs are there? Is there a main stair (e.g. where the TGSI leads to?) Which stairs shall be signed with handrail signs? How many floors are there? After you have collected all the information you decide for example to sign one stairwell with handrail signs. Example for determination of requirements: The access starts in the ground floor, there are 2 upper floors. Access by using one stair: ground floor first floor first floor second floor 2 stairs (with each 2 handrails) Quotation out of DIN 32986: Having stairs with each two handrails, the next floor is indicated ( first floor)at the beginning of the right handrail. At the end of the right handrail the current floor is indicated (first floor). The stair leads you from ground floor to first floor. The handrail sign in the ground floor indicated FIRST FLOOR and the one in first floor indicated FIRST FLOOR. If you, whether through carelessness or visual impairment, overlooked a step, it is easily possible to get seriously hurt. To avoid that risk stairs should be marked. The individual elements are better visible and increases safety for all. Stumbling, falling or slipping are avoided.
