1 General 1.1 Introduction These installation, assembly and maintenance instructions were published to ensure the safety of the product, in a construction environment.

This guideline may be amended regularly based on new insights and regulatory requirements. The current version can be viewed on www.holetherm.com.

4 1 General 1.1 Introduction These installation, assembly and maintenance instructions were published to ensure the safety of the product, in a construction environment. They have been drawn up according to the current state of science and technology and serve only as a general guideline. This guideline may be amended regularly based on new insights and regulatory requirements. The current version can be viewed on These instructions have been drawn up with the utmost care. The installer remains responsible for the correct installation of our materials, based on his or her skills. Holetherm shall never accept liability for possible damages resulting from plainly following these instructions in practice. If you have any doubts about the implementation and application, contact one of our experts first. 2 Quality standards 2.1 Declaration of Performance From 1 July 2013, manufacturers, importers and distributors of construction products must provide a Declaration of Performance (DoP) for products to which a harmonised European standard applies. Holetherm DW has classified the DoP statement for its products, per product group. The appropriate DoP number is listed on the product labels and delivery documents. 2.2 Certification The Holetherm DW flue system conveying flue gas, is produced in the Netherlands. The production is certified and monitored by KIWA, under the requirements set in Construction products directive 89/106/EEC. The EC Declaration of Conformity, stating that the product, Holetherm DW, meets the CE requirements, as set out in the European Standard DIN EN :2009 for system 2+. This statement has been tested and issued by Kiwa Cermet Italia S.p.A, under certificate registration number 0476-CPR-6883 Rev.01 dated Contract No. C9820. The installation of the Holetherm DW flue system conveying flue gas must meet the fire safety provisions set out in NEN Application The Holetherm DW is suitable for standardised liquid and gaseous fuels with a maximum flue gas temperature of 600 C. The flue gas outlet is called a pressurised system, this means that the pressure in the channel, under normal operating conditions, is lower than the air pressure of the environment. 5

6 3.3 Characteristics of the material Holetherm DW Stainless Steel flue gas canal: Outer wall: (304) Inner wall: (316L) Holetherm DW (Figure 1 and 2) is a comprehensive concept and connectable to Holetherm EW. The product is not interchangeable with or connectable to products from other manufacturers. For an overview of the components, refer to the product catalogue on our website Figure 2 4 Fire safety and channel installation 4.1 Fire safety According to the building regulations, a chimney must be encased inside buildings and ducts, in a wall or floor and in places where the fire resistance of the structure is adversely affected. Holetherm is a channel that may not be installed independently. This means that, if physical contact with the channel is possible in areas where the source of heat is not located, the channel sections need to be encased. In situations where the floors are not fire resistant, the covering may only be closed off with a fire separation plate at the bottom. In case of flammable material, the casing between floors in the floor passages must run through and remain open. This will prevent heat accumulation from occurring inside the casing. Applicable standards can be found in the Building regulations, and the provision for fire safety can be found in NEN6062. Holetherm DW has been tested by TNO according to NEN6062, TNO report 94-CVB-R048.6 The NEN6068 standards define the resistance against fire penetration and transfer between spaces mutually. Depending on the situation on site, this may vary between 30 or 60 minutes. Finally, NEN-EN is of great importance. According to this standard, the Holetherm CC is approved for T450 flue gas temperature. Before an installation can be fitted, the conduit route should be inspected in the intended route. The conduit route must meet the regulations set out in the Building Regulations. The application of the flue gas outlet in existing partitions and casings, should also meet the fire safety requirements in NEN Channel installation The flue gas outlet must be built from the connection to the combustion unit to the outlet on the roof. The channel must be installed as vertically as possible. Holetherm DW channels or channel sections may only be installed to the combustion unit, not in a horizontal position. The maximum angle for an elbow in the vertical channel is

With a combustible floor, the opening around should be at least 75 mm. Always finish such openings with fire-resistant material. The fire-resistant materials should always be applied in accordance with the instructions of the manufacturer and the Building Regulations. The opening in a flammable roof and/or roof board must be the same size as the outer diameter of the casing to be installed. The sleeve must go through the roof boarding and connect to the roof finish. Always finish the surrounding combustible materials around the channel off as described above. For the Holetherm DW with an internal diameter of 300 mm or more, you should keep a distance of at least 113 mm from combustible materials. One again, finish off all combustible materials with fire-resistant materials. All materials on the inside of the casing should always be made of non-combustible materials. The material thickness of the casing must be at least 12 mm, e.g. Promatect fire-resistant construction sheeting. Never use a fire separation plate within a casing, this separation allows for an accumulation of heat by blocking the air flow within the casing. 4.4 Outlet The location of the outlet of the flue channel must be chosen with care, the best position is the ridge of the roof, or as close as possible to this area.

With a roof slope of less than 23, the outlet should be 0.5 meter above the roof. For roofs with a slope greater than 23, the following formula applies H (α 23)a H = height of the outlet A = Roof slope in degrees a = The horizontal distance from the ridge to the centre line of the outlet 5 Dilution factor 5.1 Calculation The dilution factor is a measure of the quality of the supplied air. The dilution factor is calculated from the distance between the outlet of a ventilation or flue gas outlet, and the inlet of the ventilation supply provisions. The following requirements apply to the dilution factor: Table 1 Dilution factors with various types of outlets. To calculate the dilution factor, the following information has to be available: The required air volume flow qv for the outlet of the indoor air or the load B for the outlet of smoke from a combustion unit. The shortest distance L between the outlet of the ventilation/flue gas outlet and the inlet opening(s) for ventilation air. The mutual difference in height Δh of the outlet and the supply opening. The calculation method for the dilution factor is not intended to counteract odour pollution, but only to prevent situations that may be harmful for the health. There are no public requirements for the distance between a ventilation air supply and a sewer vent. Additional requirements with respect to the dilution are contained in the method in NEN 3215/NTR

6 Assembly 6.1 System construction Build the system from the combustion unit. The various sections are inserted into each other as a socket connection.

10 6 Assembly 6.1 System construction Build the system from the combustion unit. The various sections are inserted into each other as a socket connection. Slide the channel with the plug connection in the socket, from the section beneath it. This is necessary because the Holetherm DW is an inward draining system. A reverse installation could potentially lead to leakage problems, possibly resulting in penetrating rainwater or condensation forming within the channel. Therefore, during installation, take note of the arrow printed on every section; this indicates the direction to the gas flue outlet. Figure 4 Use a connecting piece for connection to a stove or fireplace. If your stove or fireplace has a rear connection, two elbows of 45 must be installed immediately after the connection piece, to prevent horizontal channel sections. In order to support your Holetherm DW, it is important that you insert a seat structure in the vertical channel immediately after the horizontal cross-over (Figure 4). Elbows should be mounted stress free, and a new seat structure should be installed after every seven metres of channel length. 6.2 Bending If an elbow is required in the route, only one bend is allowed. The maximum bending into the flue gas outlet may not exceed 2 metres. If you pass through a wall opening in stone-like material, you should consider a 20 mm distance around the channel on the back of your stove or fireplace. Never fix the channel in concrete or cement, since there will be no relief for the thermal effect. Secure the first vertical channel section after the connecting piece, with a wall bracket. After this a wall bracket must be applied after every 1.5 metres. To apply a casing, use the Holetherm sleeving bracket rather than a wall bracket (Figure 5). 6.3 From double-walled (DW) to single-walled (SW) If you switch from a Holetherm DW channel to a SW channel, use the contra connection piece DW. This connection piece was designed to create a reliable connection between the two channels and seals the insulation material from moisture and dirt, in a correct manner. Use the Holetherm connection piece when switching from SW to DW. Figure 5 10

In case of a combustible floor, this connection should at least be 200 mm. Install a fire separation plate around this floor conduit and finish the conduit in the ceiling as described in the conduit and encasing 4.5. Figure 6 Fix the various channel components with the accompanying Stainless Steel clamping strip. These clamping strips are used to make a tensely strong connection between the components of the system (Figure 6). 6.4 Roof installation A fire separation plate is also used with an installation on the roof, in the event of a sloping roof this fire separation plate will have to be used in the sloping position. A roof bracket is used at the roof outlet (Figure 7). Depending on the roof finish, a roof plate or counter flashing is used. At the end of the conical cone of this roof plate or counter flashing, install a storm collar. This can be sealed with a heat resistant silicone sealant. Finally, you install the end cap. If the outlet is at risk of over pressure as a result of downward wind caused by the surrounding buildings, you should install an extraction cap. Figure Channel maintenance More information can be found on our website ( Depending on the use, ensure that your chimney is cleaned 1 to 4 times a year by an accredited chimney sweeper. If you experienced a chimney fire, your channel should always be assessed on reusability of the channel components, by a competent authority. 11
