1 GREENSPOINT AND LAUDER RD. EC/PRE-KlK PAGE 1 SECTION WOOD FLOORING PART 1 - GENERAL 1.1 RELATED DOCUMENTS A. Drawings and general provisions of the Contract, including General and Supplementary Conditions and Division 01 Specification Sections, apply to this Section. 1.2 SUMMARY A. Section Includes: 1. Provide and install all wood stage flooring as indicted on the drawings and specified herein, including wood treads, risers and base. 2. Provide final sanding and finishing of wood flooring including wood treads, risers and base. B. Related Sections: 1. Division 09 Section "Rough Carpentry." 2. Division 03 Section Concrete subfloor 1.3 SUBMITTALS A. Product Data: For each type of product indicated. B. Shop Drawings: For each type of floor assembly and accessory. Include plans, elevations, sections, details, and attachments to other work. Include expansion provisions and trim details. C. Samples for Initial Selection: Manufacturer's color charts showing the full range of colors and finishes available for wood flooring. D. Samples for Verification: For each type of wood flooring and accessory, with stain color and finish required, approximately 12 inches long and of same thickness and material indicated for the Work and showing the full range of normal color and texture variations expected. 1.4 MEASUREMENTS A. Verify all dimensions shown on drawings by taking field measurements; proper fit and fastening of all components is required. 1.5 QUALITY ASSURANCE E. Hardwood Flooring: Comply with NOFMA's "Official Flooring Grading Rules" for species, grade, and cut. 1. Certification: Provide flooring that carries NOFMA grade stamp on each bundle or piece.

2 GREENSPOINT AND LAUDER RD. ECfPRE K/K PAGEl B. Fire Treatment: All lumber shall be non-combustible treated lumber with a flamespread rating of 25 or less as per ASTME-84. C. Coordinate and cooperate with all trades whose work relates to wood flooring so work progresses smoothly and without delays. 1.4 DELIVERY, STORAGE, AND HANDLING A. Deliver wood flooring materials in unopened cartons or bundles. B. Protect wood flooring from exposure to moisture. Do not deliver wood flooring until after concrete, masonry, plaster, ceramic tile, and similar wet work is complete and dry. C. Store wood flooring materials in a dry, warm, ventilated, weather-tight location. 1.5 PROJECT CONDITIONS A. Conditioning period begins not less than seven days before wood flooring installation, is continuous through installation, and continues not less than seven days after wood flooring installation. 1. Environmental Conditioning: Maintain an ambient temperature between 65 and 75 deg F and relative humidity planned for building occupants in spaces to receive wood flooring during the conditioning period. 2. Wood Flooring Conditioning: Move wood flooring into spaces where it will be installed, no later than the beginning of the conditioning period. a. Do not install flooring until it adjusts to relative humidity of, and is at same temperature as, space where it is to be installed. b. Open sealed packages to allow wood flooring to acclimatize immediately on moving flooring into spaces in which it will be installed. B. After conditioning period, maintain relative humidity and ambient temperature planned for building occupants. C. Examine all subsurfaces to receive work and report in writing to General Contractor, with a copy to Architect, any conditions determental to work. Commencement of flooring operations indicates acceptances of all subsurfaces. PART 2 - PRODUCTS 2.1 FIELD-FINISHED WOOD FLOORING A. Solid-Wood Flooring: Kiln dried to 6 to 9 percent maximum moisture content, tongue and groove and end matched, and with backs channeled. 1. Manufacturers: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide products by one of the manufacturers listed below.

Basis-of-Design Product: Subject to compliance with requirements, provide product indicated on Drawings or comparable product by one of the following: a. Partee Flooring Co. b. Miller and Company, Inc. c. Searcy Flooring Co. 3. Species and Grade: Select White Oak, T&G clear. 4. Cut: Plain sawn. 5. Thickness: 5/S inch. 6. Face Width: 2-1/4 inches. 7. Lengths: Manufacturer's standard. S. Simulated Wood Pegs: Contrasting wood pegs at ends of flooring pieces. B. Wood Sleepers: Southern Yellow Pine 2 inch x 4 inch (nominal size). Sleepers shall be preservative pressure treated provided by Koppers Company, Inc. C. Mastic: EVERLOCK Floor Mastic, as manufactured by Gulf States Asphalt Co. D. Wood subfloor: No.2 Douglas Fir or Southern Yellow Pine, 1 inch x 6 inch S4S, kiln dried. E. Building Paper: i5-pound asphalt saturated felt. F. Floor finish: Hilliard's Trophy Seal, Trophy Finish. G. Steps: Solid white oak tread and riser boards, shaped tread nosing in accordance with drawing details. H. Stain: Duraseal with integral sealer. I. Base: Solid white oak, 25/32 inch thick, shaped in accordance with drawing details. PART 3 - EXECUTION 3.1 EXAMINATION A. Examine substrates, areas and conditions, with Installer present, for compliance with requirements for maximum moisture content, installation tolerances, and other conditions affecting performance of wood flooring. B. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. C. Concrete Slabs: Verify that concrete substrates are dry and moisture-vapor emissions are within acceptable levels according to manufacturer's written instructions.

EC/PRE-K/K PAGE PREPARATION A Concrete Slabs: Grind high spots and fill low spots to produce a maximum 1/8-inch deviation in any direction when checked with a 1 O-foot straight edge. 1. Use trowelable leveling and patching compounds, according to manufacturer's written instructions, to fill cracks, holes, and depressions in substrates. B. Remove coatings, including curing compounds, and other substances on substrates that are incompatible with installation adhesives and that contain soap, wax, oil, or silicone, using mechanical methods recommended by manufacturer. Do not use solvents. C. Broom or vacuum clean substrates to be covered immediately before product installation. After cleaning, examine substrates for moisture, alkaline salts, carbonation, or dust. Proceed with installation only after unsatisfactory conditions have been corrected. 3.3 INSTALLATION A Sleepers 1. Concrete Slab shall be cleaned thoroughly of dust, oil, wax, etc. After cleaning, apply Gulf-Seal Primer and allow drying. Apply EVERLOCK Floor Mastic, heated to approximately degrees F. Spread the mastic evenly, using five (5) gallons (approximately 45 pounds) per 100 square feet. 2. Embed the sleepers in the thick mopping of hot mastic and seat them securely. Sleepers should be clean, straight dry lumber, 2 x 4, cut in lengths of 24 inches, giving a continuous surface for nailing. 3. The first row of sleepers shall start with a 12 inches length, the second row with an 18 inches length, and the third row with a 24 inches length. The remaining sleepers in each row, after the first screed, shall be 24 inches long. Repeat this pattern across the entire floor area to ensure staggered joints by a minimum of 4 inches. 4. The sleepers shall be laid 12 inches on center and at a right angle to the direction of flooring. 5. Sleepers shall not be installed closer than 1 inch to the walls to allow for expansion. 6. Do not begin sub-floor operations until sleepers have set in the mastic for twenty-four (24) hours. The sleepers shall be laid in strict accordance with the specifications of the respective wood flooring manufacturer's association. B. Sub-floor: 1. Face nail with 2-8d nails each bearing, power-driven, cement-coated nails, 2. All joints staggered and over supports. 3. Apply sub-flooring diagonally and space boards 1/8 inch apart. 4. Sub-floor to be held Y2 inch away from walls. 5. Ends of sub-floor shall be cut parallel to walls and shall be over a screed. C. Finish flooring: 1. Install sleepers and wood sub-floor as heretofore specified.

5 GREENSPOINT AND LAUDER RD. EC/PRE-KlK PAGES 2. Over wood sub-floor: Install one layer of i5-pound asphalt felt lapping all joints 6 inches. 3. Seal underside and ends of finish floor strips prior to installing. 4. Lay finish floor, each piece being driven up tight to adjoining piece with a wooden block. Blind nail all flooring, using 8d power-driven cement-coated at not less than 10 inches o.c. Short lengths of flooring shall be evenly distributed throughout area. No short lengths shall be laid directly in front of door openings. Install flooring in accordance with the recommendations of The National Oak Flooring Manufacturer's Association (NOFMA) 3.4 FIELD FINISHING A. Machine-sand flooring to remove offsets, ridges, cups, and sanding-machine marks that would be noticeable after finishing. Vacuum and tack with a clean cloth immediately before applying finish. 1. Comply with applicable recommendations in NWFA's "Installation Guidelines: Wood Flooring." B. Fill and repair wood flooring seams and defects. Sand floors as heretofore specified. C. After sanding to smooth, apply one coat of stain and one coat of penetrating sealer. Finished floor shall match approved sample as determined by Architect. D. Cover wood flooring before finishing. E. Do not cover wood flooring after finishing until finish reaches full cure, and not before seven days after applying last finish coat. 3.5 PROTECTION A. Protect installed wood flooring during remainder of construction period with covering of heavy kraft paper or other suitable material. Do not use plastic sheet or film that might cause condensation. 1. Do not move heavy and sharp objects directly over kraft-paper-covered wood flooring. Protect flooring with plywood or hardboard panels to prevent damage from storing or moving objects over flooring. END OF SECTION
