When positioning the shelter, ensure level ground is available at the door(s). Clear the site of rocks and other debris. When spreading the mainframe roof trusses and legs, assign one person to every pair, so the roof trusses and legs are spread without damage to the key flange connections. Always attach eve bars to roof assembly before releasing legs to ground to avoid damage to roof truss assembly. Tightly stretch all fabric panels when attaching hook-and-loop to avoid wall flutter. Never let the end of an eve bar hang from one connected end as it may cause damage to the bar and/or frame. In windy conditions, loosely attach the roof and roof insulation before raising the frame on its legs. Anchor the tent as soon as possible in windy conditions. Never hammer or force a connection. Always center doors on the center of the eave bar. When attaching roof panel, always start at opposite corners first, then attach the roof beginning at the center of each eave bar. When releasing the push-button locks, move the bars slightly to release tension. 3
1. Vestibule Placement The Western Shelter GateKeeper Vestibule Connector provides an environmentally controlled passage between any two GateKeeper shelters. The walls of a Western Shelter GateKeeper are composed of two matched pairs of panels, which connect to the frame and each other by means of hook and loop fastening strips. These strips are color-coded: Mainframe connections are TAN Door frame connections are BLACK Connections with adjacent wall panels are BLUE A Vestibule Connector may be installed in one of two ways: When shelters are to be connected between two wall seams, the wall panels from each shelter will be attached to each other to form the Vestibule walls. (See Figure 1, below) When shelters are to be connected between two doorframes, the doorframes will be removed from both shelters and hung on either side of the Vestibule, and then the short wall ends will be attached to the doorframes. (See Figure 2, below.) Note that connection points must be the same on both shelters, i.e. at wall seams on both shelters, or at doorframes on both shelters. 4
2. Assembly Both shelters must be erected before installing the Vestibule. At the very least, the frames with roof panels must be fully deployed. All Vestibule connections must be made wall seam-to-wall seam or doorframe-to-doorframe. The wall sections being joined should be parallel and directly opposite each other. The finished distance between the two shelters will be 89 inches (2.26 meters.) The GateKeeper Vestibule Connector kit contains the following components: Arched Eave Bars, 2 ea. Arched Ridge Bar, 1 ea. Telescoping Base Bars, 2 ea. Roof Panel/Roof Insulation, 1 ea. Floor Panel, 1 ea. Expansion strips, 2 ea. Door Curtains, 2 ea. Assembly Manual, 1 ea. Storage/Transport Bag, 1 ea. 2.1 Frame Assembly a. At the shelter wall segments where a Vestibule is to be installed, roll back both wall panels to expose the frame. If the segments contain doors, remove doors and threshold ramps, and set them aside. Temporarily tack the rolled back wall panels to the adjacent wall panel hook-and-loop to keep them clean and off the ground. b. Unbuckle the web straps on the floor at either end of the wall segment, allowing the floor to lie flat at that segment. 5
c. Remove the base bars from the two shelter wall sections to be joined. Return the base bars to their storage bag; they will not be needed for the Vestibule. d. Lay the Vestibule floor panel between the two shelter wall sections to assure correct orientation and spacing. It may be necessary to reposition one of the shelters to line them up properly. e. To connect the floor sections, fold back the ends of the Vestibule floor to expose the tan fastening strip. Attach this strip to the tan fastening strip on the shelter floor. f. Once the two fastening strips are connected, fold the Vestibule floor panel back over the shelter floor, and tuck the edges under the shelter frame. Lift the eave bars briefly then reset the legs on the ground. This will relieve frame tension and make it easier when disconnecting and connecting the eave and base bars. 6
g. Remove the eave bars from the two wall sections to be joined. Replace them with two arched Vestibule eave bars. The black fastening strips on the arched eave bars should face into the shelters. Keep the arched bars supported at all times during installation. Allowing the bars to hang from one connection point may cause irreparable damage to the frame. h. Connect the two straight eave bars (removed in the previous step) between the lower ends of the arched Eave Bars. The black fastening strips should face out. You may need to move the bars slightly to make the connections. Remember to keep the eave bars supported at all times. i. Connect the arched ridge bar between the two arched eave bars. Again, do not let the bars hang unsupported from one end as it could cause irreparable damage. j. Connect the two telescoping base bars between the shelter legs on either end of the Vestibule. 7
2.2 Vestibule Walls If the Vestibule is installed between two shelter wall segments that contain doors, follow the steps in section 2.2.1, below. If the wall segments do not contain doors, skip to section Vestibule Connection Between Doorframes - Install Doors When connecting two shelters door-to-door, you may remount the doors onto the Vestibule walls. If you do not wish to install doors in the Vestibule, filler panels are located in pouches on the inside of GateKeeper doors. Mount these panels on the Vestibule instead of the door frames. a. Doors or filler panels must be centered in the Vestibule walls to assure a proper fit. The center of a wall segment is indicated by a small label on the inside of each eave bar. Align the center hinge of the door with this label. b. A channel at the top and bottom of each doorframe secures it to the Vestibule eave and base bars. Make sure both top and bottom of the doorframe is firmly attached before proceeding. c. Separate the fastening strips on the GateKeeper floor panel in front of each door. The threshold flap at the doorframe should lay flat on the ground, while the floor on either side stays upright against the frame. 8
d. Unroll the shelter wall panels along the Vestibule frame, and attach them to the doorframes. Wall Panels should be tightly stretched when attaching to minimize wall flutter. e. Be sure the wall panels do not gap in the corner where the Vestibule meets the shelter. They should fit snugly into the corner. f. Inside the Vestibule, attach the floor to the welded weather strip running along the base of each wall panel. It is not necessary that the hook and-loop fastener pulls the wall and floor together tightly. It s easiest if two people stretch the floor edge from one leg to the other, drop the wall fastener in place, then press the wall down to attach them together. g. A series of web straps are attached to the weather strip on each Vestibule wall panel. Working from inside the Vestibule, thread these straps under the nearest base bar. Snap the connectors together and lightly snug the strap. To insure a proper seal, make sure the floor is securely attached to the walls and the walls securely attached to the frame. 9
h. Open both doors and roll the threshold flap up over itself to form a berm against or under the base of the doorframe. The berm will deflect water away from the door bottom. i. Set the threshold ramp on top of the doorframe. The folded-up vinyl threshold flap should be completely covered by the ramp Vestibule Connection between Wall Seams - Join Wall Panels If the Vestibule is installed between two wall panel seams, follow the steps below: a. Unroll the shelter wall panels along the Vestibule frame. Wall Panels should be tightly stretched when attaching to minimize wall flutter. b. Be sure the wall panels do not gap in the corner where the Vestibule meets the shelter. They should fit snugly into the frame s corner. 10
c. Wall panels should meet in the center of the Vestibule wall. Join the blue fastening strips to seal the panels together. Wall Panels should be tightly stretched when attaching to minimize wall flutter. d. Inside the Vestibule, attach the floor to the welded weather strip running along the base of each wall panel. It is not necessary that the hook and-loop fastener pulls the wall and floor together tightly. It s easiest if two people stretch the floor edge from one leg to the other, drop the wall fastener in place, then press the wall down to attach them together. e. A series of web straps are attached to the weather strip on each wall panel. Working inside the Vestibule, thread these straps under the nearest base bar. Snap the connectors together and lightly snug the strap. To insure a proper seal, make sure the floor is securely attached to the walls and the walls securely attached to the frame. 11
2.3 Vestibule Roof The Vestibule Connector roof consists of two panels: an outer layer constructed of weather-proof vinyl, and an insulating inner layer. The two panels attach to each other by means of hook and loop fastening strips, which run along the perimeter of both panels. The two roof panels should be attached to each other before installation. During take-down and storage, leave these two panels attached to each other. a. Drape the roof panel over the arched ridge bar, with the center seam of the panel running along the top of the bar. b. The roof panel must be centered for a proper fit. Use the black web strap on top of the roof panel to center it on the arched end bar. From inside the Vestibule, fasten the roof to an arched eave bar, starting in the middle and working out toward the ends. Repeat with the other end of the roof panel. c. Once both ends have been secured, attach the sides of the roof to the tan fastening strip along the top of the Vestibule wall panels. d. Working outward from the center seam, connect the tan fastening strip on the underside of each shelter roof to the strips on top of the Vestibule roof. 12
e. When connecting the roofs, make sure the fastening strips seal completely in the corners where the Vestibule meets the shelters. 2.4 Vestibule Curtains The Interconnecting Vestibule features two translucent 3-part divider curtains, which may be installed at either end of the Vestibule to isolate it from one or both shelters. a. From inside the shelters, peel back the Vestibule roof from the arched eave bars on either end of the Vestibule. Do not separate the Vestibule and shelter roof panels. Just expose the hook-and-loop fastener on the arch bar. b. Attach the divider curtains to the arched eave bars. Start in the center of the bar, and work out towards either end, pulling the curtain taut as you go. c. Once the curtain is in place, pull the Vestibule roof panel back down, and attach it to the fastening strip at the tops of the curtains. 13
3. Parts List for Vestibule Assembly Replacement Parts and Accessories Western Shelter Systems offers a full line of replacement parts, as well as a wide range of optional accessories for all HS-series shelters. To view a complete list of parts and accessories, please visit our website at: or call Mon-Fri, 7am-3:30pm, Pacific Time 14
Maintenance, Care and Repair The life span of a Western Shelter depends on how well it is maintained. Western Shelter Systems provides protective bags for shipping and storage. The field bags are made of 18-oz vinyl coated polyester, which will withstand a reasonable amount of use. All bags have carry handles, so dragging units is not necessary or recommended. All bags should be carried by two people. Replacing the components in the proper bags insures all parts will be accounted for, and ready for deployment, by the next user. Vinyl Care While the 13-oz vinyl is basically inert, mild soap and water will normally remove most contaminants from the surface. If necessary, more aggressive chemicals may be used without damaging the fabric. In some cases it may be necessary to put the fabric into bags wet. It is recommended that the fabric be dried at a later time and returned to the bags ready for the next incident. Vinyl Repair All units come standard with a vinyl repair kit. Each kit contains a can of vinyl cement and a generous supply of patching material. To repair a damaged area: 1. Thoroughly cleaned with soap and water. 2. Allow to dry completely or force-dry with a hair dryer. 3. Cut out a piece of spare vinyl fabric slightly larger than the damaged area. 4. Once completely dry, apply a liberal amount of vinyl cement to both the repair area and the patch. 5. Let dry to the touch and place the patch over the damaged area. 6. Press the patch firmly to insure complete contact.
