All solutions are presented according to the building section. Then, they are classified into subcategories depending on the type of waterproofing required. Finally, the products are shown according to the application method or technology if they are Alsan products. SOPREMA developed a colour code to facilitate searches that will be used in all our communication tools. 10 DUO SELVEDGE TECHNOLOGY For safer installation, some membranes are equipped with DUO SELVEDGE, a unique technology developed and patented by SOPREMA. The first few inches of DUO SELVEDGE are sealed with self-adhesive to protect the component located underneath from the torch flame. The rest is then safely heat-welded or sealed with hot air. SUSTAINABLE DEVELOPMENT All material manufacturers have a duty to consider on the impact of their products on nature and human health, throughout their life span, from design through manufacturing and eventual demolition. For SOPREMA, this ethical principle resulted in the creation, among other things, of an international environmental policy. Its main objective is to take into account the impact of SOPREMA s products on the environment and health from their design to their destruction, but also to promote a true environmental culture within the company. SOPREMA s sustainable development efforts are far from a new development. In January 1997, SOPREMA was the first company in its field to obtain the ISO certification. This environmental management standard requires us to implement an environmental policy, and more importantly, to monitor it concerning environmental objectives, environmental impacts and risks, and emergency plans, among other things. EN 16001, the standard for energy management systems, guarantees that SOPREMA complies with the most recent practices in the area of energy management. 11 BITUMEN SOPREMA s bitumen technology has been proving its durability since It is by far the most reliable technology in the industry. Most of SOPREMA s waterproofing membranes are manufactured with SBS modified bitumen and include polyester, glass mat or composite reinforcement. Our experienced research and development team created and refined these membranes, and their unique superior-quality composition makes them exceptionally durable and strong. Water repellent, strong and durable, bitumen has been the material of choice for waterproofing requirements since Antiquity. Bitumen is a natural, noble material that remains on the cutting edge of technology to this day. SOPREMA s research and development centres have always tried to optimize the mechanical properties of bituminous waterproofing membranes in order to give them unequalled durable resistance. Bitumen is said to be an elastomer when it is modified by synthetic compounds or styrene butadiene-styrene (SBS) polymers. The quality of SBS bitumen is determined by the properties of the added elastomers and the formulations used in the mixture. 12 REINFORCEMENTS SOPREMA waterproofing membranes are manufactured with four types of reinforcements. A good system always combines the strengths of each reinforcement type to maximize its properties and effectively resist movement caused by the extreme temperatures of the North American climate. Glass Mat Glass mat reinforcement provides waterproofing systems with high dimensional stability. Polyester Polyester reinforcement has a great elongation capacity and is highly puncture resistant. Composite Composite reinforcement combines the benefits of glass mat and polyester reinforcement. This gives it the best resistance to weather and temperature variation. Tri-Laminated Woven Polyethylene Some SOPREMA self-adhesive membranes include a surface reinforcement. As with the reinforcements described above, this material is flexible and reacts very well to movement. Tri-Layer Laminated Woven Polypropylene Some SOPREMA self-adhesive membranes include a surface reinforcement. As with the reinforcements described above, this material is flexible and vapour permeable.

13 APPROVALS, CERTIFICATIONS AND STANDARDS APPROVALS NABA: National Air Barrier Association (or ABAA : Air Barrier Association of America) Air barrier materials are defined by their air and vapour permeance. The National Air Barrier Association defines an air barrier material as one that has been tested and has an air permeance of less than Pa ( lb/ft²). CCMC: Canadian Construction Materials Centre The Canadian Construction Materials Centre is a part of the National Research Council of Canada (NRC). It offers the construction industry a national evaluation service for innovative and non-standardized materials, products, systems and services in all types of construction. The CCMC also evaluates products that are covered under the scope of recognized standards. The CCMC provides an opinion on whether a construction product or system complies with the requirements of the National Building Code of Canada (NBC), among others, as an acceptable solution. Acceptable solutions are those that comply with the Code s applicable requirements. ASTM International : American Society for Testing and Materials Products tested in accordance with the standards of ASTM International comply with the stringent standards recognized in Canada and the USA. These standards evaluate the performance of products used for building waterproofing. These high standards are unquestionably a guarantee of quality. CGBC: Canada Green Building Council LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) is a third-party certification program as well as a comparison standard internationally recognized for the design, construction and operation of high-performance green buildings. Many SOPREMA products are qualified to contribute to obtaining LEED credits. Look for the LEED logo to recognize them. Note that, depending on the site location, most SOPREMA products can help obtain the MR Credit 5: Materials and resources (Regional Materials).

16 BUILDING SCIENCE To each project a solution: it is sometimes difficult to navigate through all the products on the market. SOPREMA will thus attempt to summarize in a few words the main principles of building science in relation to the waterproofing of walls, foundations, parking decks, balconies, plaza decks, fountains and ponds. WALLS Components which separate the inside of a building from the outside of it are included in what is called the building envelope. The functions of this barrier are the following: Watertightness Air and vapour tightness Control of heat gains and losses To ensure the smooth operation of the envelope, it is essential to get good continuity between components. Air Leaks Air leaks are a common problem concerning the building envelope. These air leaks are essentially the result of uncontrolled air movement through the building envelope. Air leaks can cause many problems : Condensation Moisture Mould growth Lower air quality inside the building When talking about condensation, it is important to know that warm air can hold more water vapour than cold air. When warm air cools, the percentage of relative humidity increases and can reach a saturation level called the dew point. Then, if the air cools even more, the water vapour surplus which cannot be contained in the air turns into water droplets, thus forming condensation. Causes Air leaks going through the building envelope are caused by air pressure coming from one or more sources, such as wind pressure, the stack effect, or pressure created by heating, cooling and ventilating mechanical units.

17 Using an air barrier to avoid these problems The use of an air barrier becomes necessary to control air leaks. Air barriers are generally divided into two categories: permeable and non-permeable. Non-permeable air barrier Resistant to: air leaks water infiltration diffusion of water vapour Permeable air barrier Good protection against air leaks and water infiltration in the building envelope Must always be set on the warm side of the insulation Allows the diffusion of water vapour Are considered air/vapour barriers Are not considered vapour barriers + 20 C + 20 C Air/vapour barrier Dew point - 20 C Vapour retarder Air barrier (permeable) Dew point - 20 C Two Different Types of Walls Choosing the right type of wall is very important when designing a building. In order to make the most informed choice, it is important to understand what the walls will have to go through during the building s service life. Let s compare the different types of walls that we can find in a cold climate market. Wall with a Continuity of Insulation The first type of wall that we can find is the one with a continuity of the insulation. In this case, the whole structure of the building is kept on the warm side, which greatly reduces thermal bridges. This wall is the most energy efficient and comfortable. The installation of an air/vapour barrier is recommended when constructing these walls. SOPREMA Solutions The products that can be used for these types of walls are: SOPRASEAL STICK 1100 T, SOPRASEAL 60 and 60 FF, SOPRASEAL 180 HD and 180 FF, SOPRASEAL STICK 130 and 130-S, SOPRASEAL XPRESS G, SOPRASEAL LM 200 S and SOPRASEAL LM 200 T. Hybrid Wall The second type of wall that we can find is the hybrid, where insulation is in wall cavities and on the cold side of the permeable air barrier. Insulating materials are added in the cavity between studs, thus moving the dew point inwards. In this assembly, the vapour barrier and air barrier functions are separated. A vapour barrier is installed on the warm side of the insulation and the air barrier is positioned outside the structure. 18 FOUNDATIONS Waterproofing foundations is an element often overlooked when developing plans and specifications. In addition to providing an effective barrier to moisture, it helps protect buildings against possible water infiltration. There are several systems that can protect any type of foundation. Whether it is a house or a project located in a densely populated urban area, there is a waterproofing system for every building. Below, you will find the various applications in which installation of a waterproofing system is possible. Waterproofing of Conventional Foundations Conventional Waterproofing This type of waterproofing is related to foundations where waterproofing products are directly installed on the foundation walls. We can find them in most residential, commercial, industrial and institutional buildings. Sealing of foundations with waterproofing membranes is always done on the outside of the building to create positive waterproofing, which means that the hydrostatic pressure exerted by the water pushes the waterproofing membrane against the structure. In the type of construction, the foundation wall is accessible for applicator to apply the membrane to the poured foundation wall. SOPREMA Solutions For this application, we offer two types of membranes: sheet membranes and liquid membranes. 19 WATERPROOFING OF BLIND SIDE WALLS Perfect for Projects in Dense Urban Areas When the project is located in a high-density urban area, we must take into account the generally restricted space during excavation. In this type of construction, we can find blind side walls (BSW), since waterproofing is done on the outside, before pouring the concrete in place. This type of waterproofing is installed when property lines or other site conditions do not permit the excavation of an open trench outside the perimeter of the foundation. This type of excavation is typically done in urban areas or underground parking decks. Concept Our waterproofing system involves installing self-adhesive waterproofing membranes on a retaining wall or the existing wall of a neighboring building before pouring concrete for the new foundation. This system protects the infrastructure against possible water infiltration between the concrete walls of the buildings. While the concrete is setting, the surface of the Colphene BSW membrane grips onto the newly poured concrete, eliminating the risk of lateral water movement between the waterproofing membrane and the foundation wall. 20 Waterproofing of Insulated Concrete Forms Insulated concrete forms (ICF) are a type of foundation becoming more and more common. The insulated concrete form keeps the concrete in the best curing conditions. It also provides a high insulation value continuously encapsulating the structure. In addition, the concrete must be reinforced with vertical and horizontal steel rods that make foundations more structurally sound. SOPREMA Solutions The product that is specifically designed with this type of foundation is COLPHENE ICF.

21 PARKING DECKS Whether inside or outside, it is important to protect the concrete in parking decks. They must be protected against the harmful infiltration of water and de-icing salt that can be carried by vehicles, in order to avoid the following problems: Reinforcement corrosion Serious deterioration of the concrete slab resulting in the weakening of the structure SOPREMA offers two effective solutions for the protection of concrete in parking decks. Polyurethane-Based Liquid Waterproofing This liquid waterproofing system, consisting of polyurethane-based resins, can be used both on a new parking slab and one that needs to be renovated. It is intended to be left exposed to vehicular traffic, is resistant to tire traction and does not need to be covered. However, this system is not recommended on slabs where snow will be removed with equipment that may damage the membrane. Benefits: Lightweight (does not add excessive weight to the structure) Thin Flexible Abrasion resistant SOPREMA Solution In this case, the system that can be used is the ALSAN TRAFIK HP 500. Bituminous Membrane Sheet Waterproofing Parking decks can also be protected using a bituminous membrane. This membrane is very resistant to puncturing, allowing circulation of paving equipment directly on its surface. The membranes are thermofused using the MINI-MACADEN automated equipment designed for the installation of bituminous membranes. With this equipment, the installation is quick and uniform. The bituminous membrane is then covered with paving asphalt. Benefits: Excellent puncture resistance Flexible Easy to install SOPREMA Solution The TRAFIKROCK membrane is the product used in these conditions.

22 BALCONIES PLAZA DECKS Found on the majority of buildings, plaza decks and balconies are the place to be when the time comes to take a deep breath of fresh air and relax a little. Therefore, it is important to protect this precious space for so many building occupants. Different systems can be used when performing waterproofing works on these surfaces. Liquid Waterproofing The waterproofing of plaza decks and balconies can be done using a liquid membrane. These systems will better protect the concrete and can be exposed to UV rays. In the case of liquid systems, we offer two types of products: polymethyl methacrylate (PMMA) and polyurethane (PU). This system can also quickly open up access to spaces again, something owners appreciate. This is a high performance, flexible and seamless liquid system. The ALSAN TRAFIK HP 500 system is the waterproofing and protection solution for concrete balconies. This system protects the surfaces exposed to foot traffic and ensures waterproofing.

23 Bituminous Membrane Sheet Waterproofing We may also use bituminous membranes, which allow fast implementation, even in cold weather. This membrane is thermofused directly on the previously primed concrete. The membrane is then covered with a slab or some other protection allowing foot or vehicle traffic on the surface. The sections that will be exposed at upstands must be covered with a granulated bituminous membrane. Benefits: Excellent puncture resistance Flexible Easy to install SOPREMA Solutions COLPHENE FLAM 180 membrane is the product to be used in these conditions. FOUNTAINS PONDS Used in most cases as decorative elements, fountains and ponds add prestige to the building they compliment. Since water is an element that can adversely affect concrete, it is very important to protect the structure from this element. SOPREMA Solutions In such cases, ALSAN RS is the solution.

It is factory-laminated with modified bitumen adhesive on an exterior gypsum board with surfaces free from organic fibers (paper free). SOPRASEAL LM 200 S is a water-based single-component liquid product made of synthetic rubbers. It is used as an air and vapour barrier on walls. This product can be used on most building surfaces, such as masonry, concrete, wood and gypsum. SOPRASEAL LM 200T is a water-based single-component liquid product made of synthetic rubbers. It is used as an air and vapour barrier on walls or as a rigid insulation adhesive. It can be used on most building surfaces, such as masonry, concrete, wood and gypsum, as well as insulation boards. SOPRASEAL STICK 1100 T self-adhesive membrane is an air and vapour barrier composed of SBS modified bitumen and a tri-laminated woven polyethylene facer. It can also be used as a through-wall membrane, a masonry flashing, a transition membrane, as well as a waterproofing membrane around openings. SOPRASEAL STICK 100 T is available in different widths. The SOPRASEAL STICK 130 and SOPRASEAL STICK 130-S membranes are used as air and vapour barriers on walls. These self-adhesive membranes are composed of SBS modified bitumen and a strong glass mat reinforcement. The surface of the membrane is either sanded or covered with a thermofusible plastic film. SOPRASEAL 60 and 60 FF membranes are used as air and vapour barriers on walls. These membranes are composed of SBS modified bitumen and a glass mat reinforcement. The surface of the membrane is either sanded or covered with a thermofusible plastic film. SOPRASEAL 180 HD and 180 FF HD membranes are used as air and vapour barriers on walls. These membranes are composed of SBS modified bitumen and a non-woven polyester reinforcement. The surface of the membrane is either sanded or covered with a thermofusible plastic film. SOPRASEAL STICK VP is a self-adhesive vapour permeable and air barrier membrane with a tri-laminated polypropylene facer. It can also be used as a throughwall flashing membrane and transition membrane. SOPRASEAL STICK VP is available in different widths. The substrate must be clean, solid and free of debris, grease and any contaminants, which may compromise adhesion. 2 Joints and cracks of less than 6 mm (1 4 in) can be filled with SOPRASEAL LM 200 T without using a reinforcement core. It is important to let the product cure in cracks overnight before continuing application of SOPRASEAL LM 200 S over the entire surface. 3 Cracks greater than 6 mm (1 4 in) wide must be covered with a 100 mm (4 in) strip of SOPRASEAL STICK 1100 T or SOPRAGRIP F self-adhesive membrane. ELASTOCOL STICK primer must be used in areas covered by the self-adhesive membrane. Use a hard roller to apply pressure over the entire surface to ensure perfect adhesion. 4 Install SOPRASEAL STICK 1100 T at window and door openings and at transition with roofing. The MACADEN can be used in summer or winter, at temperatures as low as -10 C. The operation of the MACADEN is fully automated. At first, a hot air blast dries the surface while a burner constantly heats the membrane to liquefy the bitumen.
