Wood in Green Globes
What basic properties of WOOD should be considered before it is chosen for use on the project?! Energy -- Wood can offer relatively high R value! Acoustics -- Wood attenuates sound! Abundant Sourcing -- Rapidly renewable! Environmental -- Biodegradable over time, CO2 sink, oxygen producer! Economic -- Cost efficient, taxes paid! Social Employment of thousands across the value chain
How can you use Wood in Buildings so that it may help achieve a buildings certification?! Structural softwood lumber! Dimensional lumber and solid beams! Plywood! From softwood and hardwood veneer! Engineered Wood Products! Glulam beams, finger jointed lumber, cross-laminated timber! Reconstituted wood products! Particleboard, hardwood, fiberboard! Millwork! Doors, windows, cabinets, furniture, siding, flooring, moldings
Forest Certification! Oregon forest landowners meet some of the strictest environmental standards in the world through compliance with the Oregon Forest Practices Act. Yet they may choose to meet additional standard to gain recognition from independent, third party forest sustainability certification systems.! America s three largest certification systems are:! American Tree Farm System (ATFS)! Forest Stewardship Council (FSC)! Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI)! ATFS has 804,634 acres in Oregon! FSC has 137,950 Acres in Oregon! SFI has 3,293,163 Acres in Oregon as of 2014.
Now to the Green Globes rating system:! Here are some of the questions asked of the design team as they submit to the Green Globes for New Construction (NC) process.! (These are just examples.)
Potential Points Applicable to Wood! Path A: Performance Path for Building Core and Shell! Criteria: Was the Athena Impact Estimator for Buildings (Version 4.2 or later) used during design to evaluate a minimum of two different core and shell designs, based on life cycle assessment (LCA) in compliance with the assessment guidance and resulting in selection of the building core and shell with the least anticipated environmental impact? or! Was another LCA tool used during design to evaluate a minimum of two different core and shell designs, based on life cycle assessment (LCA) in compliance with the assessment guidance and resulting in selection of the building core and shell with the least anticipated environmental impact?
SURVEY ANSWERS: Yes LCA comparison with the Athena Impact Estimator (33 points) Yes LCA comparison with an alternate tool (33 points) No (0 points)! ToolTip: The building core and shell with the least anticipated environmental impact of the two alternative building designs must be implemented for potentially receiving full credit.
Potential Points Applicable to Wood! Materials and Resources! Core & Shell Path B - % products have third-party sustainable forestry certifications 20 points max Canadian Standards Association (CSA) Sustainable Forestry Initiative (SFI) Forest Stewardship Council (FSC) American Tree Farm System (ATFS)! 40% (20 points) 25-39% (15 points) 10-24% (10 point) 1-9% (0 points) No (0 points)
NC and Wood Impacts! Materials and Resources! Waste! Construction Waste 7 points max! Criteria: What percentage of the construction waste, including building demolition waste, will be diverted from the landfill? Answers: > 74% (6 points) 50-74% (4 points) 25-49% (2 points) < 25% (0 points)! Minimal use of raw materials 1 point! One option: optimum value engineered (OVE) wood framing
Ancillary benefits of wood framed construction recognized in Green Globes for New Construction NC! Energy! Energy performance positively impacted by use of wood in core & shell and envelope Wood improves R value! Acoustics! Wood is a natural attenuator of sound
