4 Before you start Please carefully read through this installation manual before beginning installation, operation or maintenance work. Failure to follow these installation instructions may result in damage or injury. Please keep this manual safe for future reference. Symbols used Danger! Risk of electrocution Risk of damaging the product or harming the environment Exclusion of liability No warranty is given or liability assumed for damage arising from incorrect installation. Required components The customer must provide some parts in addition to the supplied SOLON components. You can find an overview of these parts in the "installation" section.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 5 Safety information This installation manual is exclusively intended for qualified trade's people. Applicable health and safety regulations and procedures must be followed (in Germany, cf. BGV A1, BGV A2, BGV C22). We will not accept any liability for DIY installation and we strongly recommend that you hire a reputable firm. General hazard warnings Beware of risk of death by electrical shock or arcing. Pay close attention to the following features that are specific to photovoltaic systems: Modules contain voltage when light shines on them. The modules can only be isolated at the DC switch, which means the DC side of the system will still be live if a fault occurs (short circuit, earth fault). Electrical arcing that cannot be extinguished can be produced when contacts in use are disconnected. Do not insert any (electrically conductive) parts into the plugs or sockets of the modules. Do not install solar modules and wiring using wet plug connectors. Make sure that tools are dry and the work is performed under dry conditions. Observe the inverter manufacturer's installation regulations. Do not use damaged modules. Keep children away from modules, inverters, and other current-carrying components in the system. Perform all work on the wiring with extreme caution. Observe the safety instructions issued by manufacturers of all other system components. General warnings Do not remove any part or type plate attached by the manufacturer. Do not dismantle modules. Do not expose modules to artificially concentrated sunlight. Do not use paint, adhesives or sharp implements on the modules. Do not clean modules with solvent-based cleaning agents. Before installing the system, check the structural strength of the building and the system itself. The module is only intended for use in temperate climates (see the installation conditions section for more details.

6 Warnings relating to storage, unpacking and transportation Exercise the utmost care at all times when handling modules. Always transport modules in their correct packaging. Always carry the modules with both hands. Wear protective gloves. Do not hold modules by their connection boxes or leads. Avoid bending or flexing the modules. Do not place heavy items on modules. Do not stand on modules. Do not let modules fall over. Do not use sharp implements on the modules. Keep all electrical contacts clean and dry. Store modules in a dry place prior to fitting. The roof-integrated system must be grounded. Fasten the grounding cable (Cu, at least 16 mm 2, UV-resistant) at a suitable electrically-conducting location on the covering frame and on the building's equipotential bonding bar using a screw connection. All metal parts must be interconnected in an electrically-conducting fashion. We recommend you make a note of the module serial numbers for any future enquiries.

8 Installation conditions The SOLON Black 160/05 module dimensions are based on the measuring templates provided in DIN 1055; DIN EN parts 1 4. The SOLON Blue 250/05 or SOLON Black 250/05 module fulfills the functions of a conventional roof covering on pitched roofs in terms of protection from the weather provided the following conditions are satisfied: Roof pitch from 10 to 60. A waterproof sarking membrane must be used with roofs with pitches ranging from 10 to 22. The roof must comply with state-of-the-art technology as well as current standards and regulations, e.g. tight, stable roof battens waterproof sarking membrane The construction work is completed by a specialist company and all points specified in this manual were precisely observed (construction work according to regulations). The following points must be considered when installing the modules: Auxiliary mounting boards and battens should not be directly exposed to moisture. During the installation, the wood must be dry. Otherwise, the stability of the screw can not be guaranteed. Sufficient rear ventilation of modules to prevent power losses due to heat accumulation. This can be improved by also using ventilation tiles. Do not install modules in the vicinity of highly flammable gases and vapors (e.g. gas containers, gas stations, spray-painting systems). Do not install modules near naked flames and flammable materials. > Do not expose modules to concentrated light. Do not expose modules to high concentrations of salt (recommended distance from the sea is at least 500 m) or sulfur (volcanoes) conditions, as this creates a risk of corrosion. Do not install modules as overhead glazing or as facade elements.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 9 Installation recommendations Orientation and tilt For the installation inclination, observe the installation conditions for this module type. In Europe, the modules should ideally face south. In central Europe, the optimal tilt angle for the modules is around 30. The tilt angle is somewhat steeper in northern Europe and somewhat flatter in southern Europe. Deviating from the optimal orientation and tilt will reduce the system's energy yield. The graphic below serves as a guide. Percentage energy yield depending on roof orientation Absence of shading A module is considered to be shadow-free if no shadow is cast across its entire surface all year round i.e. nothing blocks the sunlight shining on it. Even small areas of partial shading caused for example by chimneys, roof aerials, buildings, trees (what happens when they grow?) and lamp posts will result in a reduced yield. Modules should therefore be installed where shading is at a minimum throughout the day, or preferably where there is no shading at all. If necessary, a shading analysis can be performed using a simulation tool or solar altitude analyzer. Temporary shading caused by dirt (dust, bird droppings, leaves, etc.) can also diminish yields. For notes on how to remove this soiling, see the "maintenance" section. Rear ventilation Module performance decreases with increasing temperatures. Reliable rear ventilation must therefore be ensured. Using additional ventilation tiles can reduce heat build-up that reduces performance.

This installation manual describes installations performed from left to right. The installation can also be started from the right.

14 Preparation: Calculation of module array dimensions The modules including the sheet metal can only be installed in a roof area that has a uniform pitch. Roof tiles At least two roof tiles must remain around each module array to be installed. Modules The modules are x m (height x width). A gap of 0.01 m must be kept between the modules. Sheet metal The side parts require an additional space of 0.12 m (2 x 0.06 m). For the front and upper parts, an additional space of approx m must be calculated in the module array height. Calculation of module array width Number of modules x 1.04 m + Number of modules 1 x 0.01 m = + 2 Side parts 0.12 m = = Result Calculation example: 6 modules next to each other 6 x 1.04 m = 6.24 m x 0.01 m = 0.05 m m = 0.12 m = 6.41 m The module array for six modules will be 6.41 m wide from the right to the left tile edge (plus four roof tiles). Two roof tiles are also required on each side for calculating the module array width. Calculation of module array height The overlap at the bottom of the frame reduces each module size from 6 cm to 1.72 m. Number of modules x 1.72 m = m = = Result Calculation example: 2 modules above each other 2 x 1.72 m = 3.45 m m = 0.40 m = 3.85 m The module array for two modules arranged above each other will be 3.85 m high (plus four roof tiles). Two roof tiles are also required above and below the array for calculating the module array height.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 15 Installation step 1: Roof battens (support battens) The roof battens (support battens) must be supplied by the customer. The support battens secure the module on the roof. The use of waterproof battens with a minimum thickness of 26 mm is required. Quantity You require a total of five rows of timber beams/roof battens. Their respective length is calculated using the number of modules next to each other x 1.05 m. If your module array is wider than the roof battens available at your specialized dealer, the total length can also be created by shorter individual parts 2 Modules 5 rows of roof battens, each 2.10 m 6 Module 5 rows of roof battens, each 6.30 m 3 Modules 5 rows of roof battens, each 3.15 m 7 Module 5 rows of roof battens, each 7.35 m 4 Modules 5 rows of roof battens, each 4.20 m 8 Module 5 rows of roof battens, each 8.40 m 5 Modules 5 rows of roof battens, each 5.20 m Any cut edges created on support battens must be protected against mold growth, etc. using suitable wood preservative. Remove a suitable number of roof tiles, according to the space required. In the first work step, two support battens are installed in the lower area. They serve to secure the modules from sliding during the subsequent installation. Using straight roof battens simplifies the subsequent installation.

Screw the first, lower support batten (16) on the counter batten or roof batten using screws (17) provided by the customer. In doing so, make sure that the clearance (lower edge) to the underlying roof batten (upper edge) is 190 to 210 mm apart. In case there is an existing covering with lower tile rows, the clearance of the support batten (lower edge) to the top edge of the existing tiles should be 170 mm. The clearance on the side to the roof covering must be at least 100 mm The height of the reinforced support battens may extend past the height of the existing roof battens by no more than 43 mm. Reinforce the installed support batten (16) according to drawing by tightening further support battens (16) on top of it using screws (17). To ensure sufficient rear ventilation of modules the reinforced support batten may not be continuous.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 17 Installation step 2: Mounting battens The mounting battens are used to secure the modules. They are vertically screwed onto the roof battens. The mounting battens and the fastening screws must be provided by the customer. Requirements stipulate using waterproofed mounting battens with a thickness of 24 mm and a width of 140 mm to 180 mm. Make sure to use the correct screw lengths. Screws that are too short compromise the system's structural strength. Screws that are too long can damage the underlying waterproof sarking membrane. Length Each module requires battens with a length of 1.72 m. 1 module 1.72 m 2 modules 3.45 m 3 modules 5.17 m 4 modules 6.90 m 5 modules 8.62 m The length of the mounting battens depends on the number of modules arranged above each other. Any cut edges created on mounting battens must be protected against mold growth, etc. using suitable wood preservative. Quantity For each vertical module row, two mounting battens are required, plus another final mounting batten per module array. The number of mounting battens is calculated using: the number of vertical module rows x Number of modules Number of mounting battens Number of modules Number of mounting battens Number of mounting battens

Tighten the left mounting batten (15) on the roof battens using screws (17). In doing so, make sure that the clearance from the left edge of the mounting batten to the roof covering is 100 mm. Tighten the center mounting batten (15) on the roof battens using screws (17). In doing so, make sure that the clearance from the center of the middle mounting batten to the left outer edge of the left mounting batten is 350 mm. Tighten another two mounting battens (15), with a clearance of 350 mm from the center of one mounting batten (15) to the center of the other mounting batten (15), on the roof battens using screws (17). If the module array height is taller than the used mounting battens (15), they may need to be extended vertically by placing several mounting battens (15) together. When placing the mounting battens (15) together vertically, make sure that no module screw is placed on the joint between two battens they are tightened with at least two roof battens.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 19 Installation step 3: Module installation The modules must not be subjected to any force, for example, stepping, leaning, etc. on the modules, during the entire installation! First, place the SOLON Blue 250/05 or SOLON Black 250/05 (1) on the mounting battens (15) and carefully let it slide down to the reinforced supporting battens (16). Align the side of the module (1) parallel to the tile covering. The mounting batten (15) must extend past the module edge by at least 10 mm and may not protrude by more than 20 mm. Check the alignment of the module (1) to the roof covering and adjust it if necessary. Tighten the module (1) on the mounting battens (15) using the provided SOLON hexagonal self-tapping wood screws (2) with the sealing washers.

Make sure that the cables are fed through under the mounting battens (15). The modules (1) must not lie on the cables. Position the second module (1) on the mounting battens (15) above the first module. Establish the electrical connection of the modules (1) using the preassembled connector system according to the wiring diagram Align the side of the second module (1) to the roof Covering and tighten it onto the mounting battens (15) using the provided SOLON hexagonal self-tapping wood screws (2) with the sealing washers. Repeat the installation steps for installing additional horizontal module rows accordingly.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 21 Installation step 4: Mounting battens for an additional vertical module row Tighten three more mounting battens (15) on the roof battens with screws (17) for the next row of modules. In doing so, make sure that the clearance from the middle of the next mounting batten (15) to the module edge is 350 mm. Tighten the next two mounting battens (15) on the roof battens using screws (17). In doing so, make sure that the clearance from the center of one mounting batten (15) to the center of the other mounting batten (15) is 350 mm. If necessary, extend the mounting battens by placing them together vertically. When placing the mounting battens together vertically, make sure that no module screw is placed on the joint between two battens they are tightened with at least two roof battens.

22 Installation step 5: Installing another module row Set the lower module (1) on the mounting battens (15) on the right, next to the module that is already installed and slide them together. The two spacers on the side predetermine the 10 mm distance between the modules (1). Make sure that the cables are fed through under the mounting battens (15). The modules (1) must not lie on the cables. Establish the electrical connection of module (1) using the preassembled connector system according to the wiring diagram. Tighten the module (1) on the mounting battens (15) using the provided SOLON hexagonal self-tapping wood screws (2) with the sealing washers. Install additional modules (1) according to the previous installation steps.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 23 Installation step 6: Installing the rubber seals To facilitate the installation, mount each rubber seal (3) immediately after installing two vertical module rows. To make the installation easier, apply lubricant (e.g. detergent) to the underside of the rubber seal (3) Press down the SOLON rubber seal (3) from above into the gap between the modules (1) so that it is flush. Secure the SOLON rubber seal (3) at the top (on the ridge) of the mounting batten using a sealing screw (18). Cut the rubber seal (3) so that there is no overlap. The loose lower end is tightened in the last step after the frame is installed.

24 Installation step 7: Mounting battens for the last vertical module row Tighten the last (left) mounting batten (15) for the last vertical module row to the roof battens using screws (17). In doing so, make sure that the clearance from the middle of the mounting batten (15) to the module edge is 350 mm. Tighten the last mounting batten on the right (15) onto the roof battens using screws (17). In doing so, make sure that the clearance from the right side of the mounting batten (15) to the module edge is 1,064 mm to max. 1,074 mm. The two lower support battens (16) may not extend past the right side of the last mounting batten (15). Shorten the support battens if necessary.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire Set the lower module (1) onto the mounting battens, to the right of the module that is already installed (1) and slide them together. The two spacers on the side predetermine the 10 mm distance between the modules (1). Make sure that the cables are fed through under the mounting battens. The modules must not lie on the cables. Establish the electrical connection of module (1) using the preassembled connector system according to the wiring diagram. Tighten the module (1) on the mounting battens (15) using the provided SOLON hexagonal self-tapping wood screws (2) with the sealing washers. Install rubber seal (3) according to installation step 6. Install additional modules (1) according to the previous installation steps. Danger! The inverter may not be connected to the AC system while the DC wiring is routed. Modules may only be connected to the inverter after the electrical connection has been tested (installation step 8) and the cover frame has been installed (installation step 10). Make sure the polarity and connection are correct. Danger! Tightly route the solar cables together so that they are parallel and make sure there are no loops. Otherwise there is a risk of an indirect lightning strike. Twist the solar cables together loosely. The solar cables must be compatible with the module connector system. For this, see the manufacturer's specifications. Connect the string cable to the modules (1) using a suitable solar connector. In doing so, make sure that the plug connection locks into place. If necessary, route any exposed solar cables through a protective tube or hose to protect them against damage.

26 Installation step 8: Testing the electrical connection Danger! Modules may only be connected to the inverter after the electrical connection has been tested. The electrical connection must be tested before the cover frame is installed. Measure the string's open-circuit voltage for each series connection. If the measured values strongly vary from the specifications, there is a connection error. The open-circuit voltage corresponds approximately to the open-circuit voltage specifications in the module data sheet times the number of modules of this string connected in series. In case of doubt, please refer to the corresponding target values in the flash report on the installed modules provided by SOLON. The open-circuit voltage depends on the module temperature. Its value decreases as the module temperature increases. As a result, it is normal if the measured value slightly varies from the calculated standard value. Measure the string's short-circuit voltage for each series connection. If the measured values strongly vary from the specifications, there is a connection error. The target values of the short-circuit current correspond approximately to the short-circuit current specifications in the module data sheet. In case of doubt, please refer to the corresponding target values in the flash report on the installed modules provided by SOLON. The short-circuit current depends on the irradiation level on the module. Its value decreases as the irradiation level increases. As a result, it is normal if the measured value slightly varies from the calculated standard value. The short-circuit current should be approx. 90 % of the value specified in the module data sheet on a clear day and approx. 10 % on cloudy days. Danger! The grid connection may only be carried out by appropriately authorized specialist staff. The regional conditions and requirements arranged with the pertinent grid operator must be observed.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 27 Installation step 9 for 3 kwp-kit: Cover frame Installing the front parts The front parts are an integral part of the SOLON cover frame. They are installed below the module array. There is a left front part (4), a center front part (5) and a right front part (6) Tighten an additional support batten (16) so that it is flush, directly underneath the lower reinforced supporting batten (see installation step 1) on the counter battens/roof battens with screws (17). This roof batten may overlap with the roof batten above it on the side, but it is not necessary.

The sides of the corner parts, i.e. left front part (4) and right front part (6) must be flush with the outer edge of the mounting battens. Slide the left front part (4) under the module sealing lip to the upper support batten (16). Align the side of the sheet metal on the module and secure it on the lower support batten (16) using sealing screws (7) Slide the center front part (5) sideways into the sheet metal, which is already installed, to the top support batten (16) and secure it on the lower roof batten using sealing screws (7). Install the other center front part (5) the same way you installed the first center front part.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire Finally, slide the right front part (6) to the upper support batten (16), hook it into the module (1), align it on the side of the module and secure it to the lower roof batten using sealing screws (7). Fit the aluminum skirting to the shape of the roof tiles. Remove the liner or protective foil of the butyl sealant which is attached under the aluminium skirting. Then press aluminium skirting down firmly on roof tiles. Please follow the application instructions of the butyl sealant (see appendix).

30 Installation step 10 for 3 kwp-kit: Installing the side parts The side parts are an integral part of the SOLON cover frame. There is a left side part (8) and a right side part (9). They are installed on the sides of the module array Always start from below when installing the side parts (8, 9). Inside the side parts, there is an angled sheet metal strip riveted along their entire length. This sheet metal strip must be hooked into the side edge of the modules (1) to ensure the system is watertight. Applying light pressure from above, position the left side part (8) on the module (1) and hook it onto the module profile by applying pressure from the side. When installing the side parts (8, 9), bend the seam of the respective underlying sheet metal slightly upwards. This makes it easier to install the side parts (8, 9) and the upper sheet metal.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire When installing the side part, make sure that its lower end is flush with the module's sealing lip. Install the upper left side part (8) the same way you installed the lower left side part. Bend the bent seam of the lower left side part (8) back into its original position Nail the left side part (8) with the bracket (10) to every second roof batten. Finally, install the right side parts (9) the same way you installed the left side parts (8).

32 Installation step 11 for 3 kwp-kit: Installing the upper sheet metal covering The upper parts are an integral part of the SOLON cover frame. They are installed above the module array. There is a left upper part (11a), a right upper part (12a) and a center upper part (13a). 16 Screw two support battens (16) onto the counter battens/ roof battens above the upper module. The battens must be positioned so that the upper section of each upper part lies on the battens.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 33 11a a 8 Sheet metal strips are installed on the inside of the upper parts and must be hooked into the cut-outs below the modules during installation. Applying light pressure from above, slide the left upper part (11a) onto the left side part (8). Applying light pressure, simultaneously slide the left upper part (11a) down until the sheet metal hooks into the module (1). Tighten the left upper part (11a) onto the upper support batten (16) with four or five sealing screws (7). 12a Install the right upper part (12a) the same way you installed the left upper part.

a Install the center upper part (13a) on both the left upper part (11a) and the right upper part (12a). To do this, first apply a bead of silicon on each overlap. Applying light pressure, slide the center upper part (13a) down until the sheet metal hooks into the module (1). Finally, tighten the center upper part (13a) on the upper support batten (16) with four or five sealing screws.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 35 Installation step 9 for variable flashing: Cover frame Installing the front parts The front parts are an integral part of the SOLON cover frame. They are installed below the module array. There is a left front part (4) and a right front part (6). Starting with a number of three vertical module rows, the center front part (5) will also be installed Tighten an additional support batten (16) so that it is flush, directly underneath the lower reinforced supporting batten (see installation step 1) on the counter battens/ roof battens with screws (17). This roof batten may overlap with the roof batten above it on the side, but it is not necessary

36 The sides of the corner parts, i.e. left front part (4) and right front part (6) must be flush with the outer edge of the mounting battens. Slide the left front part (4) under the module sealing lip to the upper support batten (16). Align the side of the sheet metal on the module and secure it on the lower support batten (16) using sealing screws (7) Starting from at least three vertical module rows, "center front parts" (5) must be installed. Slide the center front parts (5) sideways into the sheet metal, which is already installed, to the top support batten (16) and secure it on the lower roof batten using sealing screws (7). If applicable, install the other center front part (5) the same way you installed the first center front part

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 37 Finally, slide the right front part (6) to the upper support batten (16), hook it into the module (1), align it on the side of the module and secure it to the lower roof batten using sealing screws (7).

38 Installation step 10 for variable flashing: Installing the side parts The side parts are an integral part of the SOLON cover frame.

40 Installation step 11 for variable flashing: Installing the upper sheet metal covering The upper parts are an integral part of the SOLON cover frame. They are installed above the module array. Included in the basic set are a right upper part (12b) and a left upper part (11b). The number of vertical module rows can be increased with the upper part of the extension set (center upper part (variable)(13b)). Screw two support battens (16) onto the counter battens/ roof battens above the upper module. The battens must be positioned so that the underplate (19) rests on the bending and at the end. Place underplate (19) between two modules (1) on the upper module profile and fasten using two screws (17).

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 41 Sheet metal strips are installed on the inside of the upper parts and must be hooked into the cut-outs below the modules during installation. Applying light pressure, slide down the left upper part (11b) onto the left side part (8) until the sheet metal hooks into the module (1). Tighten the left upper part (11b) onto the upper support batten (16) with two or three sealing screws (7). Starting from at least three vertical module rows, under light pressure slight down one center upper part (13b) to the module (1). Make sure that the center upper part (13b) is aligned to the center of the module.

42 Tighten the center upper part (13b) onto the upper support batten (16) with two or three sealing screws (7). If applicable, mount additional center upper parts (13b) according to the first center upper part. Finally, mount right upper part (12b) according to left upper part (11b). Do not exchange mounting positions of sealing screw (7) and special sealing screws (21). Screw the cover plates (20) on the underplates (19) using two special sealing screws (21) and one sealing screw (7).

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 43 Installation step 12: Final sealing measures The groove sealing strips (14) are self-adhesive. Cut the groove sealing strips (14) to length accordingly and glue them to the upper parts (11, 12, 13). If necessary, also attach groove sealing strips (14) on the side parts (8, 9). 3 7 Tighten the lower end of the SOLON rubber seal (3) on the support batten using a sealing screw (7). To do this, cut back the SOLON rubber seal's lower strip profile (3), which cannot be compressed.

The roof covering must lie on the upper parts (11, 12, 13) up to the height of the upper parts' first beam edge. If necessary, shorten the roof tiles accordingly. Insert the missing roof tiles on the side. In doing so, shorten the roof tiles to the correct size, if necessary.

Installation Manual SOLON SOLitaire 45 Maintenance and cleaning In general, SOLON modules are tilted at a sufficient angle to allow rainwater to wash away dust and dirt. Snow will usually also slide off SOLON modules without any intervention. If modules are heavily soiled, they can be cleaned using copious amounts of water and a gentle cleaning implement such as a sponge. Danger! When carrying out maintenance and cleaning work, please observe and comply with the safety information and warnings in the "safety information" and "applicable regulations" sections. Maintenance and cleaning should only be carried out by a specialist firm. Do not use any cleaning agents or abrasive cleaning implements on SOLON modules. Cleaning may slightly improve the yield. This is particularly true for heavy soiling caused by leaves or bird droppings that may result in partial shading. Yield losses caused by snow, however, are negligible as the yield is lowest at this time of year anyway. In addition, the PV system should be serviced by a specialist company at fixed intervals (e.g. every three years). The following points should be checked: Stability of the battens Proper functioning of the protection elements Measurements of string voltages and currents Secure fit of the sealing elements Legal requirements regarding the inspection of PV systems that do not have a MSD (mains monitoring device for the inverter) must be observed.
