4 Classification of Foams What does it all mean? How good is a fire rated foam? Tested to: EN1366 (3-4) 100% Fire Resistant B1 Foam (DIN4102) Difficult to Ignite Only B2 Foam (DIN4102) Normal Combustibility Similar to Wood B3 Foam (DIN4102) Easliy Ignited A more recent norm is the European EN Fire classification of construction products and building elements -which roughly replaces A2 with A2/B, B1 with C, B2 with D/E and B3 with F. 4

5 EN1366 Test EN 1366 specifies a method of test and criteria for the evaluation (including field of application rules) of the ability of a penetration seal to maintain the fire resistance of a separating element at the position at which it has been penetrated or as a linear joint. The purpose of BS EN 1366 is to assess: A) The effect of such penetration, orientation and gap size on the integrity and insulation performance of the separating element concerned. B) The integrity and insulation performance of the penetration or linear gap seal. C) The insulation performance of the penetrating service or services, and where necessary, the integrity failure of a service. DIN 4102 Test The samples are held vertically in a supporting frame within a square shaped vertical housing (the Brandschafht, or fire shaft). A gas burner subjects the samples to flames for 10 minutes. At the same time a constant, uniform flow of air is blown into the Brandschacht from below. In evaluating the test, smoke gas temperature and the length of the specimen which has escaped burning (residual length) are taken into account. As you can see a B2 rating is not acceptable as a fire stopping material nor is B3. B1 is a spread of flame and does not offer resistance unless tested to either BS476 or EN

7 B3 Foams FM320 Expandable Foam FM320 is a gun grade all-purpose gap filling, bonding and insulating PU foam. FM320 provides excellent adhesion and is ideal for filling holes, uneven gaps and joints. Insulating electrical outlets and water pipes and filling in penetrations in walls. FM310 has excellent acoustic performance and is suitable for usage on perimeter sealing and fixing of windows and doors, sealing of service penetrations and sealing around insulation panels.
