2 TIS FOR WORKING WITH ROKAST ARHITETRAL STONE ROTS A RATIAL REFERENE GIE FOR THE FIEL Rockast, a prodct of Reading Rock, Inc., is a niqely prodced stone masonry prodct composed of a high-density mixtre of fine aggregate, limestone, silica sand, and portland cement. Its classic look, strctral integrity, and drability have made it a poplar choice among contractors, and specifiers. Follow the tips in this gide to ensre sccessfl installation, handling, and maintenance of Rockast. QALITY ASSRANE reate and provide a fll-size field panel if project bdget allows. Reading Rock s Rockast field panels allow the architect to verify: Textre and color of the prodct Fit of adjacent nits Qality of constrction Sbmit fll-size sample pieces of Rockast nits previosly made by manfactrer sing materials from same sorces proposed for se in project. Viewing conditions shold be eqal to approved sample when viewed in direct daylight at 10 between nits of similar age, sbjected to similar weathering conditions. o not reject nits with minor chipping reslting from shipping and delivery nless chipping is obvios nder direct daylight at 20 as determined by architect. razing has no strctral or drability significance and does not by itself constitte a case for rejection. Efflorescence commonly occrs shortly after bilding wash down; in the fall and winter months when vapor transmission slows down; when masonry stays damp for extended periods of time; and is not case for rejection. lean samples or field panels based on Reading Rock recommendations. Sbmit copies of all shop drawings to the specifier and owner as reqired. LIFETIME WARRANTY Reading Rock, Inc. warrants its prodcts to meet ASTM manfactring gidelines and specifications provided the prodcts have been installed, sed and maintained according to accepted ASTM masonry standards and as recommended by the manfactrer. (For complete warranty information, please see the Reading Rock, Inc. Terms and onditions of Sale.)
3 INSTALLATION Reading Rock s Rockast mst be installed according to standard masonry specifications and within the gidelines of local bilding codes. Refer to specifications in NMA TEK Blletins and Section , & to install nits in conjnction with masonry. ll nits from mltiple cbes dring installation to minimize variation in color and help with natral blending. Rockast prodcts are manfactred from natral limestone that has color range as part of its natral beaty. Waste. For varios reasons de to shipping, handling or the manfactring process, a small amont of prodct may have blemishes or chips and shold be sed for field ctting for maximm material tilization. When ordering material, please allow for waste and saw ctting in yor material estimate. t nits sing a motor-driven masonry saw. Finished ends shold be trned to the visible side and the saw ct trned to the inside of the mortar joint to hide exposed aggregates and saw marks. When specified, fill dowel holes and anchor slots completely with mortar or non-shrink grot. Holes drilled in coping nits for light or fence posts shold be filled with flexible calk to prevent coping nits from cracking de to movement. Set nits in fll bed mortar, nless otherwise indicated on drawings. Fill vertical joints with mortar. Make joints 3/8", nless otherwise indicated on the drawings. Sealing is not reqired. Rockast is prodced with an integral water repellent (IWR) in the mix design. If sealing is reqired, apply a non bridging breathable sealer typical of rosoco s Sre Klean Weather Seal, Siloxane WB oncentrate or Siloxane, or Hydrozo Enviroseal 7 according to manfactrer s recommendations. All Rockast prodcts are shipped on a pallet and have one nfinished side. Architectral Masonry Veneer nits have only one finished face. Textred nits are to be set with the textre face forward. Smooth nits are stacked face p on the pallet. Not all ends are finished. stom cast stone nits do not have retrns or finished ends nless otherwise ordered and noted on the shop drawings. Architectral Masonry Veneer nits have an nfinished back, one finished face, and approximately 40% 60% of the nits have one smooth finished end. Architectral Masonry Veneer split and chiseled faced nits can be ordered with a matching finished end. Reqest shold be made at time of order. over wainscot for protection and bond separation with plastic, felt paper or other approved prodcts. For best reslts cover freshly installed masonry prodcts with plastic to ensre the wall system stays dry dring the cring process especially if rain or cold weather is expected. se Type N mortar when possible (ASTM 270). Type S is acceptable. LEAERS IN LEE Many Reading Rock prodcts contribte to the achievement of LEE credits on projects. We prodly spport the development of green prodct innovations and are committed to developing and improving or entire prodct line with respect to the environment. In fact, Reading Rock was one of the first cast stone manfactrers to devote resorces to prodcts with spplementary cementitios materials (SM).
4 MANAGING MOISTRE ONTROL, SHRINKAGE AN RAKING Reading Rock s Rockast stone, like all concrete masonry prodcts, may shrink slightly. The most common shrinkage/ restraint isses come from drying shrinkage, temperatre changes, carbonation and differential movement. Kiln fired clay brick expands as it absorbs moistre and concrete masonry nits shrink. This differential movement needs to be controlled when tilized with clay prodcts. IWR mortar additive can be inclded in the mortar mix when a water repellent wall system is reqired. This is however not necessary. ontrol movement in the wall system. To do this and minimize control joints consider horizontal joint reinforcement, bond separation between different bilding prodcts (Brick vs oncrete Masonry), and the se of control joints. For oncrete Masonry nits sed as a wainscot with brick above, bond separation shold be considered with horizontal joint reinforcement every 16" o.c. or every corse on 12" and 16" tall nits and appropriate control joints. lease refer to the appropriate NMA TEK Gides. ontrol joints are reqired at all openings, changes in wall height, between main intersecting walls, corners and for long rnning walls withot openings at a distance of 1 1/2 times the height of the masonry, as otlined in TEK Gide 10-2.The empirical method notes that the distance is for the masonry only and if brick is sed, it shold be treated independently for expansion and the appropriate brick technical gidelines followed. The most common shrinkage/restraint isses come from drying shrinkage, temperatre changes, carbonation and differential movement. In sing elastic (control) joints, refer to NMA TEK Blletins 10-1A rack ontrol in oncrete Masonry, 10-2 ontrol Joints for oncrete Masonry Walls Empirical Method, ontrol Joints for oncrete Masonry Walls Alternative Engineered Method, 10-4 rack ontrol for oncrete Brick and Other oncrete Masonry Veneers, and 5-2A lay and oncrete Masonry Banding etails for gidelines. Refer to NMA TEK Blletin 3-6 oncrete Masonry Veneers for proper veneer anchoring. For access to NMA TEK Blletins, log on to for a direct link to NMA s etek website. TOLERANES ry tamped stone is not strctral. It s designed to carry only its own weight. tilize architectral precast if stone is reqired to be strctral. Maximm size ratio is generally 15 to 1. nits shold not be manfactred longer or larger than 15 times the thinnest dimension. Architectral precast, sed with rebar, has a maximm size ration generally 20 or 25 to one depending on the nit profile and shape. o not deviate by more than pls or mins 1/8" from approved cross-section dimensions. o not deviate by length of nits by more than length/360 or pls or mins 1/8", whichever is greater, not to exceed pls or mins 1/4". Warp, bow, or twist: o not exceed length/360 or pls or mins 1/8", whichever is greater. For installation tolerances comply accordingly: 1. Variation from lmb: o not exceed 1/8" in 5' or 1/4" in 20' or more. 2. Variation from Level: o not exceed 1/8" in 5', 1/4" in 20', or 3/8" maximm. 3. Variation in Joint Width: o not vary joint thickness more than 1/8" or 1/4" of nominal joint width, whichever is greater. 4. Variation in lane between Adjacent Srfaces: o not exceed 1/8" difference between planes of adjacent nits or adjacent srfaces indicated to be flsh with nits. MOVEMENT JOINT LOATIONS The most common shrinkage/restraint isses come from drying shrinkage, temperatre changes, carbonation, and differential movement //
