1 CB04 Case Study Outback House by Casey Brown Architecture Creative Spaces Australia E : info@creativespacesaustralia.com.au
2 Introduction Inspired by the big sheds of the Australian outback this compact simple design on one level centers on a large overhanging roof acting as an shade umbrella to the façade and verandahs surrounding the house.the roof self ventilates thru a double skin and airofoil exhausts and is designed for the hot Australian summers. The buildings inner façade of glazing is surrounded and protected by sliding timber screens which open up to the surrounding decks and thru breezes. The plan with its central spine can be expanded or flipped depending on the orientation and occupants needs. Internally, the concrete floor acts as a heat sink and the exposed metal trusses feature in the high ceilings. The design includes a pool /pond and integrated undercover parking for two cars 01

8 Wind catchers Plunge pool/pond Air passing over cool water Covered shaded verandah Covered shaded carport N Breezeway Environmental Control This house is designed for hot/dry climates and it has many passive and active solar features to make living as comfortable as possible. The plan and section all work to maximise natural ventilation. The central high cathedral living space acts as a flue drawing warm air by convection to naturally escape through the roof ventilators on the ridge and the louvres to each gable end. Living areas and decks are orientated to the north and west to benefit from the winter sunshine and include a cooling pond or pool. The building is built on a concrete slab which acts as a heat sink at night retaining heat when the outside temperature drops. The elevations are effectively shaded by the large overhanging eaves creating a wide verandah all around, protecting the fully openable doors and windows from direct sun. There are minimal combustible materials on the façade to guard against bush fires, a sprinkler system can be fitted to the ridge and the surrounds to further protect the house from fire. 07
9 Solar hot water system on north-facing roof ** above Photovoltaic panels on north-facing roof * above LED lighting system throughout Energy efficient appliances Photovoltaic Panels Solar hotwater system N * Photovoltaic panels can be integrated on the northern slope of the roof, with a potential production of up to 4 kwh using 16 panels of 1650 x 1000mm photovoltaic panels. ** All hot water can be solar heated with collectors on the garage roof and tanks in the carport. Both PV and Solar hot water systems on the roof which can have the slope adjusted depending on the building s location to be the optimum for solar collection. Energy Management This design combines passive solar features with active solar devices to minimise energy consumption. Cooling is achieved through protecting the buildings openings from direct sunshine with the extra wide eaves, adjustable shutters and wind scopes. The configuration of the open plan allows the house to open up to take advantage of any breezes to naturally ventilate every space. Ceiling fans and high ceilings help maximise the energy efficiency of the house. The central high ridge uses natural convection venting to remove hot air. The house can be mechanically air conditioned if desired by closing the shaded windows and doors. It can also be heated with in-slab hydronic heating if desired. All hot water will be solar heated with collectors on the northern roof and tanks located in the car port. 08

13 Entry 5 Entry 5 Sloping Block: Maximum front to back foot print slope to be 5 degrees. Addition of steps at front and rear depending on slope. Cross fall of up to 5 degrees can be accomodated in the design. N NW NE Entry SW S SE Orientation: Entry is recommended via the East with East to West orientation preferred. Addition: Extra bedroom or home office can be achieved by extending the building by one bay. Entry Site Variations The Outback House is ideal for near level East to West blocks. The design can be adapted to suit the specifics of the site, within certain limits. This includes adaptations to gradient(slope), orientation, access, retained trees, views and adjoining buildings. It is recommended that siting to be done in consultation with the architect to ensure optimum solar access, shading and general consideration of other site features. 12
