Brooklin Concrete originally began production on a site located in the north end of Brooklin, Ontario. The new company quickly established itself in the marketplace by introducing precast septic tanks in Whitby, Oshawa, and the surrounding areas. In the early 1960s, Brooklin purchased a British fielding press, introducing the North American marketplace to precast slabs that were superior in strength, dimensional accuracy, and overall quality. A branch plant was added in Newmarket in the 1960s, and one was added in Huntsville in the 1970s. In the late 1970s, Brooklin became part of a cutting-edge group of manufacturers who began full-scale production of interlocking concrete pavers; their increasing demand lead to the construction of an automated plant specializing in interlocking pavers, and in 1978, a sales depot was opened in Haliburton. Today, Brooklin s plants are highly automated and computerized, with a total output exceeding 700 tonnes of precast concrete per day. 11 20 21 Paver Installation Planning 1. Draw a sketch of the area to be landscaped with interlocking pavers. Your sketch should include area measurements. This will enable our staff to provide you with the proper amount of materials required. 2. Refer to pages 14 and 15 for paver sizes. 3. Detail your job layout accordingly in order to minimize the need to cut or trim the pavers on the job. Excavation 1. Ensure the area is free of underground lines. (If you spot a wire do not proceed. Call the appropriate utility and have them come and check it out.) 2. Ensure the area is properly drained. 3. Prepare the site by excavating the foundation to allow for a crushed stone base to suit soil conditions and intended use. All topsoil should be removed. Required depth for pedestrian areas is 3-4. Required depth for vehicular areas is 6 or more. 4. Thoroughly compact the base layer to the desired grade and contour using a mechanical vibrating compactor (plate tamper). 5. Spread a loose layer of sand approximately 1 thick over the area. Draw a straight board across a guide (such as the edge restraint curb or parallel pipes laid on the base) to evenly distribute the sand for the bedding course. The depth of the sand should allow for the thickness of the paver and a small amount of compaction. Do not compact, walk on, or disturb the levelled sand. Laying the Pavers 1. From an established straight line and a corner, start laying the pavers in the desired pattern. 2. Maintain straight lines by periodically stretching string lines parallel to and perpendicular to the original straight edge. 3. Work off the laid stone and progressively lay each row until the entire area is paved. 4. Finish the project by using a stone splitter or masonry saw to cut pavers where needed. Completion 1. Sweep the area clean in preparation for tamping. 2. Using a small mechanical tamper, lightly tamp the entire area in both directions to bed down the pavers uniformly. 3. Dispense a layer of sand over the paved area and sweep the sand into the joints and tamp again. 4. Continue to cover with sand and vibrate until joints are full and each paver is locked to its neighbour. Seal It For Added Protection Our concrete pavers are manufactured to stand the test of time. 17 32 33 Wall Installation Planning 1. Draw a sketch of the retaining wall dimensions. This will enable our staff to provide you with the proper amount of materials required. 2. Refer to pages 26 and 27 for wall block sizes. 3. Before digging, carefully lay out and mark the area with spray paint. A string line and stakes can be used to further mark the area. Excavation 1. Dig a trench. It should be a minimum 3-4 deep by 12 wide. (Add a minimum 6 width for Design Wall installations.) Add a minimum-levelling base of 1 of crushed stone and then compact. 2. Use a tamper and level to ensure a properly constructed base. Install the First Course 1. If water pressure could be a problem, a drainpipe should be installed along the rear face of the trench to allow proper drainage. 2. Lay the first block level on top of the foundation. Level each stone to its neighbouring stone. 3. Use a level to ensure each piece of the first layer is level side-to-side and front-to-back. Install the Remaining Rows 1. Start a second row with a 1/2 stone offset, placing each piece tightly together. 2. If your wall is over 3 high, plastic grid reinforcement should be installed. 3. Backfill the area behind the wall using frost-free granular material and then compact it. 4. If you will be planting behind the top of the wall, cover the backfill with landscape fabric before adding topsoil to the area. Leave a flap of landscape fabric up the back of the wall to ground level to ensure proper drainage. 5. When the wall is brought to final grade, secure the top two courses of stones, including the cap, using butyl tape or a suitable adhesive caulking. (Optional wall coping stones are available.) Design Wall and Design Wall Lite Installation Profile Design Wall can be constructed up to 3 high without landscape grid. With an engineered wall and grid, Design Wall has no height limitations. Design Wall Lite can be constructed up to 2 or 4 pieces high. Quick Wall Installation Profile Excellent for small garden walls, no higher than 16 or 4 pieces high. Step Installation Profile Wall Coping Installation (For Split-face and Tumbled Coping) 1. Arrange rectangular pieces for marking and cutting in the following pattern for all curved pieces which are to be cut. 2. This top view shows how each piece is aligned for marking to achieve the best radius for cutting. 3. Once all the pieces have been cut, they should be secured to the retaining wall using an adhesive caulking or butyl tape. 4. Finish securing the remaining pieces.

23 Slab Installation Quarry Stone Installation 1. After preparing your excavation (see excavation on preceding page), draw an arrow with chalk along the stone s longest dimension. This will make the assembly easier to follow. Planning 1. Draw a sketch that includes measurements of the area to be landscaped to help determine the quantity of slabs, curbs and base material required. 2. Refer to the product size information on page 36 for slab sizes. (Please note: although our 1 3/4 patio slabs are very strong, for a driveable surface you will need to use paving stones.) Excavation 1. Excavate the soil to a depth of 6-8 below the final grade of the patio or walk. 2. Replace the soil with 3-5 of frost-free granular material to create a firm base and allow for proper drainage. 3. Compact the base material to the desired grade and contour using a mechanical vibrating plate tamper. 4. Spread a loose layer of sand approximately 1 thick over the entire area. Draw a straight board across a guide (such as the edge restraint curb or parallel pipes laid on the base) to evenly spread the layer of sand for the bedding course. The depth of the sand should allow for the thickness of the slab and a small amount of compaction. Do not compact, walk on, or disturb the levelled sand. Laying the Slabs 1. Start the first slab at a straight edge or string line. 2. Continue nesting each slab in place according to your chosen design. Completion 1. Use a push broom to evenly distribute stabilizing sand into the joints between the slabs. 2. Treat the surface with a sealer to ensure protection against stains and spills. 2. Place the stones with the arrows forming a circle. 3. Continue forming the circular patterns with the stones and join the circles together. 4. Fill in remaining areas to complete the pattern. 5. Some of the edges may need to be cut to create a straight edge. 6. Between the slabs, fill in the joints with stabilizing sand using a push broom.
